Inside Dr. Dre's Complicated Family Life: Claims of Distance, Support, and the Children He Raised — In 30+ Photos
Dr. Dre is one of the wealthiest names in music history, yet not every person who carries his bloodline has shared in that fortune, or even his attention.
The billionaire producer, born Andre Romelle Young, has fathered children across multiple relationships spanning decades. While some grew up in his orbit, others say they grew up wondering if he knew they existed at all.

What makes his family story particularly striking is not just the sheer number of children involved — it is who he chose to raise, and who claims they were left behind. And at least one child he raised was not even biologically his.

The Eldest Had to Take a DNA Test to Meet His Own Father
Dre's oldest known child is Curtis Young, born December 15, 1981, to then-girlfriend Cassandra Joy Greene. Dre was just 17. The relationship ended quickly, and Cassandra married another man, Andre Weeks, who became Curtis's stepfather.
Curtis grew up in Compton without knowing who his biological father was — until age 12, when his stepfather, in a moment of rage, blurted it out mid-argument.

For years after that revelation, Curtis tried to make contact, but his stepfather blocked it. It wasn't until his parents separated, when he was 15, that he finally reached out. Even then, getting to Dr. Dre was no simple task.
"I ended up getting one of his lawyers' numbers, and that's how I got a hold of him. Then we took the DNA test." It came back 99.9% positive.
Curtis was 20 by the time he finally met his father face to face — at Skybar in Hollywood. He described the moment as almost surreal: "It was like looking in the mirror seeing him face to face." He added: "We couldn't look at each other because we looked so much alike."

The Daughters Who Say They Were Left Behind
Around two years after Curtis was born, Dre had a daughter, LaTanya, with ex-girlfriend Lisa Johnson in January 1983. Johnson was 15 at the time; Dre was also a teenager.
Shortly after, he fathered another daughter, Tyra, with a woman named LaVetta Washington, born in May 1984.

Two more daughters followed with Johnson: LaToya, in September 1984, and Ashley, in November 1985.
Lisa later alleged that Dre did not pay child support voluntarily and that a court had to compel him to do so, long after he had become a star.
Ashley, speaking candidly in a video, recalled that growing up, she did not even know her father was famous. "At first when I was little, I didn't know he was my dad. I had other people coming up to me saying 'Oh, you know who your daddy is?'"

Her sister LaToya was even more candid in the same video. "I love being my dad's daughter. I love kicking it with my dad, but it's like we can't [ever] kick it with him cuz he's always doing something," she said. "My dad stays right down the street from me. I mean that's not — that's like 5 minutes away from where I stay so there's no excuse to me."

LaToya went further: "I don't give a [] how old I get. I don't give a [] if I'm 88 years old and my Pop's still around... I still want to be like 'Daddy, I love you[...]' Why I got to get treated like a straight stepchild or a groupie? I'm your blood daughter."

The Daughter Living in Her Car
In 2021, the most jarring story came from LaTanya, the eldest daughter. While Forbes confirmed Dre had become a billionaire, LaTanya revealed she was homeless and sleeping in a rental SUV.

The then-38-year-old was working as a DoorDash and Uber Eats driver and as a warehouse assembler earning $15 an hour. She was a single mother of four and said she had not seen her father in 18 years — and didn't even have his cell phone number.

"My kids are staying with friends - they are not living in the car, it's just me," she told Daily Mail. She added, "I'm homeless and I've been reaching out to my dad for help. His lawyer has said that my dad doesn't want to help me because I've spoken about him in the press."

Her children, she said, were old enough to understand the situation. "My kids are old enough to know who he is. They are in shock that he doesn't want anything to do with them."

The Son Who Didn't Make It
In 1991, Dre's then-girlfriend Michel'le gave birth to a son named Marcel. Michel'le — who later spoke publicly about suffering physical abuse during their relationship, including "black eyes, a cracked rib and scars" — said Dre initially wanted nothing to do with the boy and had to be taken to court for child support.

He eventually came around after family losses brought them closer. When Michel'le lost both her mother and grandmother, Dre became more involved in Marcel's life. Then came the tragedy.

Andre Romelle Young Jr., Dre's son with Jenita Porter, was found unresponsive in his Woodland Hills home on August 23, 2008. He was 20. His cause of death was ruled an accidental overdose of heroin and morphine.
The Child He Raised Who Wasn't His
In 1996, Dre married Nicole Threatt, the ex-wife of NBA player Sedale Threatt. Nicole had a son named Tyler from that marriage — and Dre helped raise him as his own.

The couple also had two biological children together: a son, Truice, and a daughter, Truly. Truly, now in her mid-20s has spoken warmly of her upbringing.

"My dad gave me the name Truly," she told Vogue. "He just thought it was beautiful." She described parents who let her explore freely: "My mom and dad allowed me to try anything without fear of being judged."

The Marriage That Ended in Court
Nicole filed for divorce in June 2020, ending nearly 24 years of marriage. The split was anything but quiet.
Nicole claimed in court papers that Dre had kicked her out of their home and "plotted to secretly transfer their assets, to deny Nicole her equal share."

She also accused him of multiple instances of domestic violence, including holding a gun to her head twice — all of which he denied.
The divorce was finalized in December 2021, with Nicole receiving a $100 million settlement — $50 million immediately and another $50 million a year later. She also walked away with all her jewelry and four vehicles, including a Rolls-Royce and a Range Rover.

Back in 2015, Dre had issued a public apology, acknowledging his past behavior without addressing specific allegations.

"Twenty-five years ago, I was a young man drinking too much and in over my head with no real structure in my life. However, none of this is an excuse for what I did," he said. "I apologize to the women I've hurt. I deeply regret what I did and know that it has forever impacted all of our lives."

The Kids Making Their Own Way
Despite the turbulence, several of Dre's children have carved out their own paths in music. Truice promotes his work independently on Instagram.

Tyler, who grew up in Dre's household and was raised as his son, said he has branched into EDM: "I'm on my own to a certain extent... I'm just about the music."

Curtis, too, pursued music on his own terms long before making contact with his father. "I was already working and pursuing my music before I knew who my father was," he said. "I always want to paint him in the best light that I can."

Dr. Dre built an empire — but the blueprint for his family is far more complicated than any album he ever produced.
