Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's unexpected return to Britain seemed to come with several fairly obvious explanations. But one of the most intriguing reasons may have been hiding in plain sight — and Harry's first days back in London only made the mystery harder to ignore.

The Sussexes' decision to establish a home base in Britain six years after stepping away from royal life immediately raised questions about what had changed. After building their post-royal life in California, returning with Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet was not exactly a minor adjustment.

Harry and Meghan reportedly arrived in Britain with their children in late August, beginning what is expected to be an extended stay rather than a permanent goodbye to the United States. The couple are expected to maintain their California home while establishing a private, non-royal base in the UK.

Archie and Lilibet are also expected to attend school in Britain, making this considerably more substantial than one of Harry's usual short trips home. The return to Britain appeared to represent a major reshuffling of the family's life.

The Obvious Reasons Behind the Sussexes’ Return

One theory naturally centered on King Charles. Harry has made no secret of wanting reconciliation with his family, and his return places him much closer to his father after years of living thousands of miles away.

It also dramatically changes the practical realities of Harry's relationship with Prince William. The brothers have remained estranged, but geographical distance is no longer one of the barriers standing between them.

Harry's presence in Britain has been described as the “best opportunity” in years for the brothers to begin repairing their relationship, even though there had reportedly been no meaningful movement between them at the time. Harry and William were still described as distant and having “no contact.”

It’s the most hopeful read on the move — but hope isn’t the same as progress. Being in the same country at least creates opportunities that did not exist while Harry was based in California.

There was another practical explanation too: the children. Moving Archie and Lilibet into British schooling would allow them to spend considerably more time in the country where their father grew up while developing stronger connections with relatives and Harry's British circle.

Taken together, family, schooling, and Harry's desire to spend more time in his home country seemed capable of explaining the move.

The visit was not a public royal-style engagement or a charity appearance. Harry was there working on what was described only as a confidential “mystery project.”

Harry's studio appearance was private enough that the production itself remained undisclosed. Tower Bridge Studios confirmed that Harry had visited, but the space had been booked by an independent production company, not by Harry himself.

He reportedly spent most of the day there with a group during a closed-set session. The studio did not reveal what was being recorded, leaving one fairly obvious question hanging over the outing: what exactly was Harry making?

Of course, Harry has several professional projects that could take him into a recording studio. His work now spans charitable initiatives, media appearances and production, while the Invictus Games will bring him additional commitments as Birmingham prepares to host the event in July 2027.

Why Harry May Need a Project This Personal

There is another reason Harry's production activity deserves attention: the Sussexes' media ambitions have entered a very different phase from the one they began in 2020.

After leaving royal duties, Harry and Meghan signed a major Netflix agreement reportedly worth around $60 million. The ambition was broad, encompassing documentaries, unscripted programming, scripted shows, children's content and movies.

Nearly six years later, however, the partnership has reportedly struggled to produce the kind of consistent entertainment slate once imagined.

Their Netflix relationship has been painted in particularly bleak terms, including the striking line: “The mood in the building is ‘We're done.’”

That does not mean Harry has stopped thinking like a producer. Quite the opposite: a sufficiently personal project could suddenly give him something no outside production company can easily replicate.

And there are few subjects Harry has a more personal connection to than his own family history. That becomes especially relevant because 2027 carries an anniversary impossible to overlook.

August 31, 2027, will mark 30 years since Princess Diana died in Paris. Three decades later, interest in her life, legacy, and relationship with her sons remains intense.

Harry and William have previously participated in productions about their mother. In 2017, a documentary marking Diana's life included rare material and reflections as renewed attention surrounded the 20th anniversary of her death.

But the next anniversary could be very different. Because this time, Harry may not simply participate in someone else's project.

A New Theory About Harry’s Plans

Royal commentator Richard Kay has now suggested there was another motive behind Harry's return to Britain — one that had received considerably less attention than reconciliation, Charles, the children's schooling or Meghan's professional opportunities.

According to Kay, Harry intends to make a television film about Princess Diana. He also described the alleged project this way:

“I am told that one of the reasons Harry's here is to make a television film, his own film, about his mother. I know he has been reaching out to his friends and others who knew her, asking them to contribute. That's going to occupy a lot of his headspace over the next 12 months.”

Before relocating to Britain with Meghan and the children, Harry had also spent time at Althorp Estate, the Spencer family's ancestral home and Princess Diana's final resting place. Former royal chef Darren McGrady later revealed that “there was a film crew” at the estate during the visit.

It still does not amount to official confirmation of a Harry-led Diana film. Neither Harry nor Meghan has publicly announced such a production, and the precise nature of his September studio work has also remained confidential.

What Harry Could Be Working on Next

Kay did not describe the alleged Diana film as a quick appearance or a small contribution to somebody else's documentary. His wording suggests a project requiring months of Harry's attention, contacts and personal involvement.

The most significant part of his claim may therefore be the timeline: the project is expected to occupy “a lot” of Harry's headspace over the next 12 months. That would take Harry almost directly toward the 30th anniversary of Diana's death in August 2027.

The timing is difficult to ignore. A project built around the people who personally knew Diana, shaped by one of her sons and developed in the run-up to such a major anniversary would inevitably attract enormous attention.

It would also enter a crowded period of renewed Diana interest. Other projects connected to the late Princess Diana are expected around the anniversary, including Earl Spencer's memoir “Swan Song” and the separate “Diana: The Unheard Truth” docuseries drawing on previously unreleased recordings.

For Harry, that could turn the next year in Britain into something much bigger than simply settling his children into school or rebuilding a UK routine. It could become one of the most personal production projects of his post-royal career.

The Bigger Stakes Behind the Film

A Diana production would have another obvious advantage: people remain intensely interested in her story. The project has even been described as a potential “crown jewel” after years of mixed results from the Sussexes' Netflix output.

“This could be the crown jewel,” the assessment continued. “It's the one project that could make the entire deal worth it.”

For Harry, it would be deeply personal: a son attempting to tell a story about the mother he lost when he was just 12. Professionally, however, it could also be the kind of high-interest production capable of cutting through an increasingly difficult media landscape.

A New Battle Over Diana’s Legacy

There is one complication Harry could never entirely remove from a project about Diana: Princess Diana was William's mother too. Kay argued that the prospect of Harry taking such a prominent role in telling Diana's story could deepen an already sensitive issue between the brothers.

The royal commentator said the alleged project “throws up that old canard. People always link Harry to Diana, but she was the mother of two boys.”

That distinction matters because Harry has regularly spoken publicly about his mother and the influence he believes she continues to have on his life. William has often approached Diana's memory more privately, but that does not make his connection to her any less central.

Kay went further, alleging that William has experienced “intense frustration” over what he sees as Harry claiming too much ownership of Diana's public legacy. The reported tension surrounding the project adds a particularly delicate element to a film that would already attract enormous scrutiny.

It is impossible to know how William would actually respond to a finished project that has not even been officially announced. Still, the possibility is particularly striking given that Harry's UK return has simultaneously been presented as perhaps his greatest opportunity to mend the brothers' fractured relationship.

If Harry really is contacting his mother's friends, gathering contributors and preparing a television film that will dominate much of his next year, Britain is not merely where he has chosen to live again — it may also be where his most consequential upcoming project has to be made.

There is still no public confirmation that Harry's “mystery project” at Tower Bridge Studios was connected to Diana, so the two should not be treated as definitively the same production.

Kay predicted that Diana's legacy — and Harry's connection with the Spencer side of his family — could become increasingly visible as that period unfolds.

“This issue of trying to use Diana, the Spencer brand, the Spencer name, to divide himself away from the House of Windsor, I think is something we're going to see even more of,” he said.

If his information proves accurate, Harry's surprising homecoming may therefore be doing two things at once. It has brought the Duke of Sussex back into the orbit of the royal family he left six years ago — while potentially giving him the next 12 months to tell Princess Diana's story on his own terms.
