Princess Catherine received a lively welcome on the Isle of Bute, where a day among local communities eventually led to an unexpected and touching moment.

Catherine and Prince William spent September 17, 2026, meeting residents and volunteers across the Isle of Bute, but the day's formal engagements were only part of what drew attention.

A crowd gathered to welcome William and Catherine as they arrived in Rothesay on Scotland's Isle of Bute. A video posted by King's Guard Tours showed Catherine smiling and waving from the window of their dark-colored vehicle.

After stepping out, the couple continued greeting those nearby before making their way to their engagements. The destination had a fitting connection to the couple.

People reported that the trip marked William and Catherine's first official visit to the Isle of Bute, including time in Rothesay, the town that shares a name with their Scottish royal titles.

Although they are widely known as the Prince and Princess of Wales, William and Catherine are styled the Duke and Duchess of Rothesay during official engagements in Scotland, according to Royal Central. William inherited the Duke of Rothesay title when King Charles III became monarch in September 2022.

Their First Shinty Attempts Did Not Go Quite to Plan

William and Catherine began their engagements at Bute Shinty Club, a volunteer-run organization founded in 1946. The couple were invited to try shinty, one of Scotland's oldest traditional sports, taking turns striking a ball with a curved wooden stick called a caman.

Catherine, who grew up playing field hockey, missed on her first attempt. She made strong contact on her next try, drawing applause from those gathered. William had a similar start. He laughed when his first attempt failed to send the ball very far, then struck it harder on his second try.

Away from the action on the field, Catherine's look also caught the attention of those following the visit. She wore an olive green turtleneck with dark brown trousers, boots, and a long dark coat, while William wore a jacket in a similar green shade.

A second video posted by King's Guard Tours captured Catherine mingling with people gathered in Rothesay. By then, the scene looked very different from her arrival, when she had greeted well-wishers from inside the vehicle.

Now among the crowd, Catherine spoke with people at close range while phones and cameras captured the interactions around her. During one of those greetings, she stopped with a woman dressed in a black coat and pink plaid scarf, who presented her with a bouquet of flowers.

The exchange soon became more personal. Catherine moved closer and wrapped her arms around the woman in a tight embrace, which the woman returned as both appeared to smile.

Their interaction continued after the hug. Still holding the bouquet, Catherine stood beside the woman for a photograph, and the pair remained close as they posed together.

The woman was not identified, and what she and Catherine said during their encounter was unclear. But the warmth visible in their exchange quickly became part of the conversation surrounding the video.

The Hug Raised Questions About Royal Protocol

In another discussion, one netizen wondered whether customs surrounding physical contact with members of the royal family had changed.

"The rules must be loosening up a bit. Not long ago, the public was not allowed to touch members of the royal family," the person said. Another reaction took a different direction, with one admirer declaring, "She was born to be queen❤️."

Princess Catherine's safety was on someone else's mind. That person remarked, "Sorry just woried bout her safety. 🦋" A different voice focused on personal boundaries, writing, "People to need to respect her space and not overstep the mark."

However, the Royal Family's official website says there are "no obligatory codes of behaviour" when meeting a member of the royal family. It notes that some people choose traditional greetings, such as a bow or curtsy, while others simply shake hands.
