"We are stunned and heartbroken by this senseless tragedy," Cook said. "We extend our deepest sympathy to the families and to everyone affected by this violence. No words can adequately express the grief our community is experiencing."

Cook said the district's immediate priorities were caring for students and staff and assisting emergency responders.

Questions Surround Who Shot the Suspect

Bend Police officers arrived at approximately 1:02 p.m. Seconds later, they reported that the suspect had been shot and killed, possibly by a bystander, according to the department's initial statement.

However, who fired the fatal shot has not been confirmed. In its 5:15 p.m. update, OPB reported that the circumstances surrounding the suspect's death were still unknown.

Four law enforcement sources told OPB that the suspected shooter was a minor, with one source identifying the suspect as 16 years old. All four requested anonymity because the information had not yet been made public.

The first 911 calls have shed light on how the shooting unfolded. But as of this writing, the motive behind the attack remains unknown.
