Who Is James Holzhauer's Wife? Meet the Jeopardy Champion's Partner Melissa Holzhauer
James Holzhauer's wife may not be as well-known as the "Jeopardy!" star, but her own game show past and quiet influence make her story just as compelling.
When James Holzhauer captured national attention with his record-setting run on "Jeopardy!," audiences were drawn to his sharp strategy, bold wagers, and rapid-fire answers.

Behind the scenes was his wife, Melissa Holzhauer — a more reserved presence who also stepped into the game show spotlight. Together, their story goes well beyond a single trivia stage.
From James's historic "Jeopardy!" run to Melissa's own televised moment, and their lasting impact through charitable giving, the couple has built a life rooted in intellect, strategy, and purpose.

James Holzhauer's 'Jeopardy' Streak That Had Everyone Watching
In April 2019, Las Vegas sports bettor James became a national sensation with a 32-game winning streak on "Jeopardy!" His aggressive betting and lightning-fast responses earned him $2,462,216 in regular-season winnings, placing him just shy of Ken Jennings' all-time record.
His strategic play set new benchmarks, and he became the first contestant to exceed $100,000 in a single game regularly. Along the way, he achieved a personal goal: to beat Roger Craig's single-game winnings record of $77,000 with a total of $110,914 — a number that matched his daughter's birthday, November 9, 2014.
However, James's streak came to an end in June of that year, when Emma Boettcher, a librarian from Chicago, defeated him. Despite leading early, Emma overtook him with a bold Daily Double wager.
Though all three contestants correctly answered the "Final Jeopardy" round, Emma's final score of $46,801 edged out James's $24,799.
After his loss, James responded with a sense of humor. On X, he shared a news article predicting his continued success and added a playful remark about timing.
In another post, he shared that his daughter was upset about the idea of him losing, so he promised they would have a party when it eventually happened. As a result, she started looking forward to the celebration and began feeling disappointed when he kept winning.
And behind his confident gameplay, James gave credit to Melissa, saying, "You know my wife was actually the only one in the entire world who thought I could make it this far. She probably overshot honestly her estimate."
But long before James was rewriting the "Jeopardy!" record books, Melissa had already taken her own turn under the lights of a televised quiz show.
James Holzhauer's Wife Was a Contestant on 'Who Wants to Be a Millionaire'
Melissa had her own experience under the game show lights. In 2014, she appeared as a contestant on "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire," hosted at the time by Cedric the Entertainer.
Representing Seattle, Melissa impressed with her knowledge and calm approach, correctly answering questions on topics ranging from Cabbage Patch Kids and African proverbs to physics and musical instruments.

During the show, James quietly supported her. At one point, Cedric turned to James and mentioned that his wife wanted to buy a puppy with her winnings. James smiled and playfully explained that she could get the dog, but only if she won at least half a million dollars.
Melissa built her bank to $57,600 before facing a difficult final question: "Using secret technology, the new $100 bill has a security strip containing 3D images of what icon?" The audience voted "The Liberty Bell," but the split was close. Unwilling to risk her full bank, Melissa made the strategic decision to walk away, securing $28,800 in winnings.
While she didn't take home the top prize, her performance revealed the same strategic thinking and confidence that would later define her husband's game.
What James Holzhauer and His Wife Have Done Beyond Game Shows
After James's "Jeopardy!" success, the couple focused on giving back to causes that reflected their shared values — education, youth support, and healthcare access. While they have donated to several organizations, the following examples highlight the impact of their contributions both locally and abroad.
In May 2019, the Holzhauers supported two Nevada-based nonprofits with $10,000 donations each: Communities In Schools of Nevada, which works to keep at-risk students enrolled in school, and Project 150, which provides resources for homeless high school students in Las Vegas. Both organizations publicly thanked the couple for their generosity.
They also made a surprise donation of $10,000 to the Las Vegas Natural History Museum. Melissa shared that their family enjoys visiting, especially because their daughter loves the animal exhibits. She added that the museum's small size and ever-changing displays give it a charm that keeps them coming back.
In June, their giving extended internationally with another $10,000 donation to the Grace Community Birth Center in Grand Bassin, Haiti. The funds helped support a campaign to build a permanent facility offering prenatal and postnatal care to women and families in the region.
In a video message, Melissa explained that the center's mission is to provide affordable, respectful healthcare to women and families, which was what inspired their support.
The pair may be known for their game show success, but their impact reaches far beyond trivia. From national TV moments to meaningful donations, they've built a legacy of knowledge, strategy, and generosity.
