Comments painted a devastating picture. One follower observed, "The grief in his eyes 😔." Another noted, "They look absolutely heart broken and just completely distraught. You can see it in their eyes, they are hurting."

The Pentagon appearance came less than 24 hours after the shocking assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, founder of Turning Point USA. Kirk was fatally shot and pronounced dead around noon on Tuesday, September 10.

Later that same day, President Trump issued a Presidential Proclamation ordering flags to be flown at half-staff across all federal properties until sunset on September 14, 2025.

"As a mark of respect for the memory of Charlie Kirk, I hereby order that the flag of the United States shall be flown at half-staff at the White House and upon all public buildings and grounds... until sunset, September 14, 2025," the statement read.

In a separate tribute, Trump called Kirk "a giant of his generation, a Champion of liberty and an inspiration to millions and millions of people." He added, "Our prayers are with his wonderful wife Erika and his beautiful children — fantastic people they are. We miss him greatly."

The President went further, announcing Kirk would be awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom posthumously. "I can only guarantee you one thing, that we will have a very big crowd," he vowed.

The nation finds itself torn between two tragedies — the grief of September 11, still raw nearly a quarter-century later, and the shocking, violent loss of Kirk, whose assassination stunned conservatives and critics alike.
