29-Year-Old News Anchor Tragically Dies After Armed Robbery Incident – Details

A violent robbery at a residential apartment complex in Abuja has claimed the life of a 29-year-old news anchor, leaving the media community in shock.

The Federal Capital Territory Commissioner of Police, Ajao Adewale, confirmed that Somtochukwu Maduagwu, a news anchor with Arise TV, died after falling from the top floor of her Katampe residence during a robbery on Monday, September 29. She met her untimely demise at the age of 29.

According to reports, vigilantes in the compound informed neighbours that Maduagwu was found unconscious after leaping from the third floor of the building. She was rushed to the hospital but did not survive. Speaking on Arise TV, CP Adewale said police officers responded to the distress call and found Maduagwu at the scene.

"She was immediately taken to Maitama General Hospital, where doctors attempted CPR," he said. "Sadly, she could not make it." The robbery occurred at Unique Apartments, a three-storey twin building with 18 flats.

Adewale reported that the robbers, whose identities remain unknown, entered the residential compound during the early hours of the day. He added that two private security guards were stationed at the building, and one was shot while trying to confront the criminals.

During the chaos, Maduagwu, who lived on the top floor, jumped from the building. "The consequences were tragic and very unfortunate," he added. An investigation team, led by the Deputy Commissioner of Police, has been deployed to track down the suspects. He recalled receiving a call from his elder brother while at work, urgently asking him to travel to Port Harcourt. Confused by the request, he pressed for more details but was given none. Just minutes earlier, he had spoken to his wife and, thinking little of it, decided to call her again.

"I told her she was the last person I spoke to, so I just wanted to talk to someone," he said. "Then I ended the call." Unbeknownst to him, his wife had already been contacted by people who were trying unsuccessfully to reach Maduagwu that morning. His unexpected call only deepened her concern.

She immediately tried to get in touch with their older daughter in Abuja and contacted a relative to arrange for a driver to check on Maduagwu at her apartment. Meanwhile, Maduagwu's father began making efforts to leave his location quickly. He contacted his company's management to request a helicopter.

"By the time everything became clear, the worst had already happened," he said. He described his daughter as someone deeply committed to her country's future, saying her dreams and ambitions had been cut short too soon.

Following news of Maduagwu's death, tributes have poured in from colleagues, public figures, and institutions across the country, reflecting the shock and sorrow that followed the tragic incident.

In an official statement shared on social media, Arise News announced her passing, describing her as a cherished team member whose presence had left a lasting impact.

The network confirmed that Maduagwu, aged 29, died in the early hours of Monday, September 29, following an armed robbery at her residence in the Katampe area of Abuja. The case remains under investigation by the Nigerian Police.
