A Journey Marked by Heartbreak, Healing, and the Family She Built

Ciara is also mom to her eldest son, Future Zahir Wilburn, whom she welcomed with ex-fiance and rapper Nayvadius DeMun Cash, also known as Future, in 2014. The singer — then 28 — and Future welcomed their son on May 19 that year. In her announcement, the singer noted that their baby weighed 9 lbs., 10 oz.

The outlet also reported that Ciara publicly confirmed her pregnancy after months of speculation during a January appearance that year on "The View," later celebrating a baby shower with friends, including La La Anthony and Kim Kardashian.

The Guardian noted that Future, initially born Nayvadius Wilburn, tweeted his own welcome after the birth, while also reporting that the pair had been dating since late 2012 and announced their engagement in October 2013.

However, their engagement ended three months after the birth of their son, with sources confirming that Future's infidelity led to the split. Ciara later married Russell in 2016, sharing the celebratory words, "We are The Wilsons!" on Twitter after their wedding.

A Father's Love and a Mother's Gratitude

Russell has often publicly expressed his love for Ciara's oldest child. In a 2021 Instagram post celebrating Future's seventh birthday, he wrote, "You have been my joy every morning & my light every night for these 7 years […] I Love you son all the way to Heaven & Back! [sic]."

Ciara has similarly spoken about the love within her household. In an interview reported by Essence, she said, "I'm so grateful for the love that's in my household, how my husband loves me and how he loves all of our children, and especially how he loves our girls."

During an August 22, 2025, interview on "The Breakfast Club," with Jess Hilarious, DJ Envy, and Charlamagne tha God, Ciara discussed Thanksgiving cooking, saying, "I can make stuffing. I can make everything when I'm focused, and I have time […] But can I cook? Yes."

She explained that she did cook for though it had been a while since she last prepared the whole meal.

When comedian Jess asked if she wanted more children, Ciara replied, "Listen, if y'all ask Russ, we ain't going to stop […] I think we probably will have one more. God willing. You know, God willing. I think we can get there. Um, you know, the problem I see is Russ, and I are kinda fertile myrtle together."

She added, "I don't know when, but I'm down. I'm down for sure."

She also reflected on what motherhood means to her, telling Charlamagne, "Oh my God, it's huge. Being a mom, like, it puts the 'P' in 'purpose' for me. I feel like I'm really doing something […] It's the best. Like, I feel like I'm really living. It's like I'm really pumping for something, like for our family."

"I'm so glad that I committed to living […] I love being a mama. [It] is the best feeling in the world," she added. Ciara expanded on what she meant about feeling truly alive, explaining that she's learned how easy it is to get swept up in chasing achievements while losing sight of the actual living part of life.

She reflected on how, early in her career, motherhood was treated as a setback — almost as if having a baby made a woman instantly outdated or less desirable in the industry. That way of thinking, she suggested, pushes people to sacrifice real-life experiences for the sake of staying on all the time.

She recalled a conversation with two close friends — women who were both thriving in their fields — who confessed they wished they hadn’t paused their family growth. Their regret stayed with her. It reminded her that time moves differently for women and that some opportunities, especially around motherhood, don’t come back around.

For Ciara, that realization formed a personal rule: work hard, stay committed to goals, but never at the cost of actually living a life that feels full and grounded. She emphasized that success means nothing if you lose yourself in the process, and she wants to reach the end of her journey still connected to who she is and the life she built, not just the accomplishments attached to her name.

A Glimpse Into Gratitude and Growth

For many followers, this year's Thanksgiving post underscored how long they have watched the singer's family grow. The mix of nostalgia, admiration, and excitement in the comments reflected a community that has followed Ciara's journey — from first-time motherhood to marriage to raising a blended family.

And on this holiday, with candlelight flickering over pastries, pies, and pumpkins, Ciara once again invited the world into a small piece of that homegrown joy.
