Something was brewing behind the scenes, and on a Sunday night at Baptist Health Brookwood, things went extremely wrong.

As investigators pick up the pieces of a domestic crime, even those closest to the young man are struggling to understand what triggered the darkness. His mother has since spoken out regarding the tragedy, providing a rare glimpse into the couple's private world.

Panic in the Patient Room

On a typical Sunday night at Baptist Health Brookwood, the hallways are probably filled with the soft sounds of monitors and the occasional cry of a newborn. But at approximately 9:30 p.m., that peace was shattered by a shooting inside a patient room.

Authorities rushed to the scene only to find a sight that no one could have predicted. Precious Johnson, a 24-year-old patient who had just completed the miracle of childbirth, died after being shot multiple times while lying in her hospital bed.

Homewood Mayor Jennifer Andress confirmed that officers acted quickly to ensure there was no ongoing threat to the public. However, the damage inside the room was already done, leaving hospital staff and patients in a state of absolute shock.

The Shooter Revealed

The shooter wasn't a random intruder or a disgruntled stranger, but the person who should have been protecting the new mother. Her 19-year-old husband, Kynath Terry Jr., reportedly turned the gun on himself after killing his wife.

Terry was a young man with a seemingly bright future, having recently finished his Army National Guard training. His own mother expressed total disbelief, noting she had no idea her son was even capable of such deadly violence.

Trouble Behind the Scenes

While the public saw a growing family, there were signs of conflict bubbling just beneath the surface. According to Terry's mother, the couple had been dealing with marital issues leading up to the birth of their baby.

In a move that now seems hauntingly significant, Johnson had requested that Terry's family stay away from the hospital during her delivery. Despite the tension, no one expected the domestic-related murder-suicide that followed.

Security Questions Arise

The incident has sparked a massive debate regarding how someone was able to bring a gun into a secure medical facility. Currently, Alabama has no security mandates for hospitals, leaving safety protocols up to individual buildings.

Hospital association president Danne Howard called the event an isolated incident, the first of its kind in 30 years. However, the facility is now conducting an after-action report to see what security measures failed.

While Terry and Johnson were the only ones physically wounded, it’s not immediately clear if the baby was present during the shooting. The child is now left to grow up without either parent following this active investigation.
