Jane Fonda Once Admitted She Wished She'd Been 'Brave Enough' — Now See What She Might Have Looked Like — AI Photos
The acclaimed actress never hid the cosmetic procedures she underwent. Over the years, she explained why she chose them and why she regretted some of them.
Unlike many public figures who rarely addressed cosmetic surgery, Jane Fonda spoke about it in her own words. Over the years, she publicly reflected on the decisions she made as her views on aging gradually changed.

Born in New York City on December 21, 1937, Fonda is the daughter of Academy Award-winning actor Henry Fonda and socialite Frances Seymour Brokaw. After studying under Lee Strasberg at the Actors Studio, she launched a film career that earned Academy Awards for "Klute" (1971) and "Coming Home" (1978).

Beyond acting, she became a fitness icon in the 1980s through her bestselling workout program and remained active in political and environmental causes while later starring in the Netflix series "Grace and Frankie."

Alongside her work in entertainment and activism, she also used her blog and interviews to share personal reflections with the public.
Jane Fonda Chose Transparency Over Secrecy
Fonda's most candid public discussion of cosmetic surgery began in 2010 while she was writing a book about aging. Determined to be honest with readers, she decided her own experiences belonged in the conversation.

In a 2010 blog post, Fonda revealed that she had recently undergone cosmetic procedures on her chin, neck, and under-eye area. She said she openly told producer Bob Evans about the surgery and joked that her new haircut might distract people from noticing the changes.

The moment affirmed her decision to speak openly rather than treat the procedure as something to hide.

She also reflected on what prompted her to reconsider a promise she had made years earlier, saying, "I swore in 2000 I'd never have anything done again but this year I got tired of not looking like how I feel and I wanted a more refined chin line like I used to have so I changed my mind."

Looking back, she acknowledged her mixed feelings about the decision. "I wish I'd been brave enough to not do anything but, instead, I chose to be a somewhat more glamorous grandma," she wrote.
That sense of reflection would shape nearly every conversation she had about aging in the years that followed.

Writing About Aging Meant Telling the Whole Story
Fonda returned to the subject in 2011 during an interview with Anderson Cooper while discussing the book and the personal experiences behind it.

She explained that leaving out one important chapter of her own life would have undermined the honesty she wanted readers to see: "I mean, it's not that I'm proud of it or anything like that; it's just that I'm writing a book. I wrote a book about aging; I couldn't not say that I had the bags taken out from under my eyes."

The interview also revealed that the decision came with personal disappointment.

"I have a friend who is my age and [an] actor she will remain nameless and I, we made a bet...we're not going to do it. So, I lied. Well, I mean, I'm not proud," she told Cooper.
Her Perspective Shifted as She Grew Older
By 2015, Fonda had begun looking back on those decisions with greater distance and perspective. Speaking with The Guardian, she reflected on how cosmetic surgery may have affected the way she aged in the public eye.

"Katharine Hepburn was three years younger than I am now when she made that movie. People looked older back then," she said. "I wish I were brave enough to not do plastic surgery but I think I bought myself a decade."
The interview quickly broadened beyond cosmetic surgery. Fonda — then 77 — said she hoped younger women would be less afraid of growing older, arguing that age need not diminish a person's passion, curiosity, or active lifestyle.

Discussing several joint replacements, she joked: "I have a fake hip, knee, thumb; more metal in me than a bionic woman, but I can still do Pilates."
Why She Decided Not to Have More Surgery
Seven years later, Fonda reflected on how her views of plastic surgery and aging had continued to evolve. During an interview with Vogue, she acknowledged that financial privilege had given her access to cosmetic procedures while questioning the pressure to keep pursuing a younger appearance.

"But then as I'm saying that, I'm thinking we all know a lot of women who are wealthy who've had all kinds of facelifts and things like that and they look terrible. I had a facelift and I stopped because I don't want to look distorted. I'm not proud of the fact that I had [one]."
She went on to explain that if she had the chance to make the decision again, she was no longer sure she would.

A Cancer Diagnosis Deepened Her Perspective on Aging
By 2022, Fonda's reflections on growing older were no longer limited to appearance. That year, she revealed she had been diagnosed with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.
Rather than focusing only on the diagnosis itself, she also shared why she remained hopeful despite beginning treatment.

"This is a very treatable cancer. 80% of people survive, so I feel very lucky," she wrote on Instagram.
She acknowledged that her experience was shaped by having health insurance and access to excellent medical care — resources she recognized are not available to everyone. Even as treatment began, she made it clear she intended to continue her climate activism.

The experience also prompted her to reflect on what illness had already begun teaching her: "Cancer is a teacher and I'm paying attention to the lessons it holds for me."
Among those lessons, she wrote, were the value of community and the importance of adapting to life's changing realities. Just three months later, she was able to share a very different update.

Returning to her blog, Fonda revealed the news she had been waiting to receive: "Last week I was told by my oncologist that my cancer is in remission and I can discontinue chemo. I am feeling so blessed, so fortunate."

Although she said the final round of chemotherapy was the most challenging, she thanked supporters for their prayers and encouragement before returning to her environmental advocacy.
Her Priorities Shifted From Looking Younger to Living Well
In her previous interview, Fonda said she no longer viewed cosmetic procedures the way she once had.
Instead, she now prioritizes habits that support healthy aging, including staying active, getting enough sleep, keeping her skin moisturized, avoiding excessive sun exposure, and surrounding herself with friends who make her laugh.

She expanded on that philosophy during an interview with Glamour, explaining why she believes growing older should be viewed differently than many people assume.

"When you get older, you realize that staying healthy is joyful and critical because age isn't so much chronology," she said. Looking back, Fonda explained that age gradually changed the way she approached self-care.

"Your body is very forgiving when you're young. So it took me a while to realize that," she said. "I abused my body a lot when I was younger. But as you get older, if you drink too much one night or not get enough sleep, you're at half-mast the next day and you don't like the feeling and that's a motivation to take better care of yourself."
