The evening raised $14.5 million for The David Foster Foundation, which gives financial assistance to Canadian families whose children need life-saving organ transplants. The gala formed part of a full weekend of anniversary activities, followed by a free concert at Victoria's Inner Harbour on August 8.

Meghan and Harry were not announced as regular attendees, making their arrival one of the evening's biggest surprises. Once they stepped onto the red carpet, photographers quickly turned their attention toward the couple.

The brief scene captured by many surfaced in a Facebook video and looked pretty normal at first. Meghan and Harry stood together and posed while flashes went off around them. Then David walked past Meghan without visibly stopping to greet her.

That single movement became the detail viewers could not agree on. Meghan glanced downward as David continued ahead, giving critics enough material to build a much colder interpretation of the exchange. The footage did not end there, however. David returned moments later with his wife, Katharine McPhee, and all four stood together for photographs.

The group smiled and laughed while the cameras kept clicking. Even so, viewers focused closely on the seconds before the group shot.

Viewers Saw Two Very Different Encounters

Some commentators believed Meghan had been publicly dismissed. On X, people picked apart the body language and offered blunt readings of the clip. One person wrote, "David Foster completely iced them out and very publicly."

Another connected the appearance to speculation about Harry's relationship with King Charles III, writing, "It all looks forced & extremely uncomfortable. Cringe! But I believe them all of sudden attending all these events is due to the recent supposed 'meeting' with KC. Me thinks the palace his now helping them & attempting rehabilitate their image [sic]."

A separate comment read, "Ohhhhh--- No father figure love there, eh! David totally ignored her and hardly say hi to the ginger. That's it [sic]." Meghan's downward glance also drew attention. One person wrote, "I loved the way she decided to cope with the diss, looking down until she collected herself. That girl seems to have a temper!"

Another claimed Katharine's greeting appeared equally distant, writing, "Even David's wife didn't hug or shake hands." The criticism continued with one observer stating, "You can always tell when she's been snubbed because she can't hold the smily act together anymore and totally collapses. You see the rejected little girl there for a moment. [sic]"

Someone else kept the assessment short: "He won't even look at her!" The debate spread to Facebook, where one person wrote, "The look on his face says it all." Another added, "So awkward! Love Mr. Foster's reaction, completely ignoring her.😅"

However, plenty of viewers saw nothing hostile in the footage. One person pushed back directly, writing, "I didn't see any snub. I saw 4 people getting set to take a picture together. Is that a snub in your world?" Another dismissed the theory altogether: "Not a snub at all!!"

Those defenses aligned closely with what David said after the clip began circulating. According to him, viewers were analyzing a red carpet arrangement without seeing the greeting that had happened earlier.

David Foster Rejects the Snub Claims

David, 76, responded in an exclusive People statement released on August 12. He said he had welcomed Meghan, 45, and Harry at the entrance about 10 minutes before the photographed encounter.

As the event's host, David had responsibilities pulling him in different directions throughout the evening. His explanation indicated that the red carpet footage captured people arranging themselves for a group photograph, not a first greeting or a deliberate rejection.

He also praised Meghan and Harry for giving their time to the foundation and interacting with those at the event. Calling them dear friends, David said, "Anyone watching can see there was no awkward moment and certainly no snub."

David was less restrained when addressing the coverage surrounding the clip. He accused certain outlets of turning ordinary positioning for a photograph into a hurtful story designed to attract clicks.

His response supplied context that the viral footage could not show. Whatever viewers thought Meghan's brief downward glance meant, David insisted that no personal slight had occurred.

Their Friendship Predates the Viral Footage

The four were hardly strangers brought together solely for a charity photograph. Meghan and Katharine, 42, have a connection reaching back to their school years in Los Angeles.

Katharine attended Immaculate Heart Middle School in Los Feliz while Meghan studied at its companion high school. Katharine's sister, Adriana McPhee, attended school with Meghan.

The women reconnected as adults, and their husbands developed a friendship as well. David had already helped Meghan and Harry during a major period of change in their lives years before the gala.

In 2020, the Daily Mail reported that David connected the couple with the owner of a secluded waterfront mansion on Vancouver Island. Meghan, Harry, their son Archie, and Meghan's mother, Doria Ragland, stayed there during their Christmas getaway.

The eight-bedroom property was located in a gated neighborhood in North Saanich, north of Victoria. It was valued at approximately $14 million at the time.

Katharine learned that the family needed a private place to stay and spoke with David, who knew the property's owner. David facilitated the introduction but declined to identify his friend or say whether Meghan and Harry paid rent.

Discussing the arrangement, David said, "I was really happy to be able to help them to find a respite just to take a little time off."

He also recalled meeting Meghan and Harry around a D-Day event in London and feeling an immediate connection with them. David described the couple as a young, modern family trying to balance royal responsibilities with their private life.

That history makes the theory of an intentional public freeze-out harder to square with David's account. His past support for the couple, their earlier greeting at the gala, and the friendly group photograph all sit outside the few seconds that drew the sharpest scrutiny.

The clip may continue to inspire competing readings because red carpet body language is easy to replay and harder to prove. David's position, however, leaves no room for ambiguity: he says Meghan was not snubbed, and the camera simply caught four friends getting into place.
