Inside the Greenville Apartment Complex Where Hayden Panettiere Spent Her Final Hours — Photos

The place where Hayden Panettiere spent her final hours looked far different from a typical rental — and photos of the property offer a glimpse inside the world that surrounded the actress shortly before her death.

The 36-year-old Hayden Panettiere was staying at the Greenville property with her on-again, off-again boyfriend, Brian Hickerson, when the emergency unfolded on August 16. Her death would leave behind a series of unanswered questions about what happened inside the rental that afternoon.

There are no publicly released photos of the exact apartment where the actress died. However, the complex's own social media posts show what similar residences and shared spaces inside the sprawling former mill look like — and some of the interiors offer an unexpectedly intimate sense of the setting.

Her Final Stay Ended with a Frantic Emergency

Panettiere, 36, had traveled from Los Angeles to South Carolina on Saturday, August 15, with her on-again, off-again boyfriend, Brian, according to previous reports. The following afternoon, the couple was inside an Airbnb in Greenville when Hickerson's brother, Zach Hickerson, entered the residence and found Panettiere unresponsive in a chair in the living room, according to TMZ.

At the time, the boyfriend was reportedly asleep in a separate bedroom. First responders were dispatched to the residence at approximately 1:50 p.m. after a 911 call, and emergency personnel attempted life-saving measures. Panettiere was pronounced dead at 2:32 p.m. after resuscitation efforts failed.

According to the report from TMZ, Hickerson and his brother called 911 after Panettiere was discovered. The police report identified Hickerson as being inside the Airbnb when Panettiere died, although the circumstances surrounding his presence there were not immediately clear.

The emergency call itself added another unsettling detail. Dispatch audio reportedly characterized the situation as a possible "overdose," while Narcan was found inside the apartment. That information, however, does not establish what killed Panettiere. Her cause and manner of death remained undetermined.

Neighbors Give Account of the Commotion They Heard

The activity inside the building did not go unnoticed. A resident later recalled hearing "a bunch of commotion in the hallway" that afternoon, explaining that the halls were so hollow that noise traveled throughout the building.

The neighbor, Micah Lee, also told WYFF4 that he had heard "someone collapsing" before hearing discussion about a cardiac arrest. "I can't confirm any of that. That's just what I've heard," Lee added.

His account was later consistent with the official description of the emergency as a reported cardiac arrest, although it does not establish exactly what happened inside the apartment.

Another resident told Page Six they were stunned to learn that Panettiere had died inside the complex, saying they had never seen her there before the news broke. The resident also recalled police remaining at the property for hours and seeing two men "sitting outside the apartment with cops."

"They looked like they were in shock, not speaking, and had their heads down," the neighbor recalled. Management subsequently contacted residents and reassured them that the incident was not believed to be criminal and that there was no reason for residents to fear for their safety.

The resident also said the apartment appeared to have been used as a rental, which was consistent with reporting that the residence was an Airbnb.

The Building Behind the Headlines

The residence where Panettiere was staying was part of Judson Mill Lofts, a redevelopment of a historic textile-mill complex in Greenville. That distinction matters when looking at the photographs.

None of the following interior images have been identified as photos of Panettiere's exact apartment. They were shared by Judson Mill Lofts on their social media and show other apartments, common areas, and amenities at the property.

Still, they provide a rare visual reference for the type of surroundings Panettiere may have encountered during her short stay. And the building is far removed from the image of a conventional apartment complex.

The property's historic industrial architecture is visible throughout, with exposed brick, enormous windows, polished concrete floors, wooden beams, high ceilings and visible mechanical elements forming part of the design.

One of the complex's own posts even describes its apartments through features such as exposed brick, floor-to-ceiling windows and loft-style interiors.

That makes the photographs especially revealing: rather than showing the exact room where Panettiere was found, they show the atmosphere of the place surrounding the final chapter of her life.

Inside the Lofts: Industrial Bones, Modern Interiors

One of the apartments features a bright, modern kitchen with tall white cabinets, stainless-steel appliances, and dark countertops.

A black-and-white patterned backsplash runs behind the counters, while a large island occupies much of the foreground. To the left, a wooden staircase with black metal railings leads toward an upper level, emphasizing the open, multi-level character of the loft.

Another set of images gives a fuller sense of how the apartments can be furnished. One living room pairs a large gray sectional with neutral pillows and a light wooden chair, while exposed brick and oversized windows dominate the background.

The bedroom is notably simple, with a low wooden bed covered in white bedding and a beige throw draped across the foot. A small plant adds greenery to the otherwise pale room.

Another residence showcases the property's more dramatic architectural features. Two enormous arched windows are surrounded by weathered exposed brick, while a wood-paneled vaulted ceiling stretches overhead.

The polished concrete floor reflects the daylight pouring through the windows. A large black ceiling fan and simple pendant light reinforce the industrial character without overwhelming the room.

Another view shows a much more stripped-back loft interior, with white walls, polished concrete floors and exposed wooden ceiling beams.

A large silver ventilation duct runs overhead, while a black structural column rises through the room. An open closet with shelving and hanging space is visible along one wall. The apartment is largely unfurnished, making the scale and industrial structure of the space easier to appreciate.

The property's industrial shell can also be transformed into something much more colorful. One living room features a mustard-yellow sectional and rust-orange accent chair, set against weathered brick columns and enormous windows.

A patterned rug, coffee table and potted plant make the space feel considerably warmer than the raw concrete and brick architecture might suggest.

The complex's shared spaces carry the same industrial character. The leasing office has polished concrete floors, exposed brick columns, and an open ceiling filled with visible ductwork, pipes, and modern lighting. Outside, the property looks dramatically different. A large swimming pool occupies the center of a broad deck surrounded by lounge chairs, tables, and umbrellas. The historic red-brick mill buildings rise behind it, with rows of tall multi-pane windows and the property's distinctive brick smokestack visible in the distance.

Together, the images provide a much clearer picture of the environment surrounding Panettiere's final stay — even though they cannot establish what her specific rental looked like.

The circumstances surrounding Panettiere's death have inevitably brought renewed attention to struggles she had discussed publicly for years.

Panettiere Had Spoken Openly About Addiction

In a 2022 interview covered by Page Six, Panettiere recalled being offered what she called "happy pills" before red-carpet appearances when she was just 15. "They were to make me peppy during interviews," she recalled. "I had no idea that this was not an appropriate thing, or what door that would open for me when it came to my addiction."

She later described struggling with alcohol, substance abuse, depression and anxiety. Panettiere also spoke about the painful circumstances surrounding custody of her daughter, Kaya, whom she shares with former fiancé Wladimir Klitschko.

During a May 2026 appearance on the "On Purpose" podcast, she rejected the idea that she had simply chosen to give up her daughter.

"The idea that anybody would think that I would just give away my child and be OK with it is heartbreaking," she said. "It couldn't be further from the truth."

She described years of battling depression, anxiety, alcoholism and substance abuse while trying to rebuild her life. By 2026, she was also promoting her memoir, "This Is Me: A Reckoning."

At what would become her final public event, at the Harmony Gold Theater in Los Angeles on May 26, an attendee told Page Six that her speech appeared "slow and slurred at times."

She Was Also Carrying the Loss of Her Younger Brother

Panettiere had endured another devastating personal loss years before her death. Her younger brother, Jansen Panettiere, died in February 2023 at age 28 from an undiagnosed heart condition.

In a 2024 People interview, Panettiere described the loss in deeply personal terms. "He was my only sibling, and it was my job to protect him," she said. "When I lost him, I felt like I lost half of my soul."

She said the experience changed the way she viewed everyday problems. That history of grief, addiction and recovery now forms part of the broader context surrounding the sudden death of an actress who had spent years publicly trying to find her footing.

The Autopsy Ruled Out One Possibility but Not the Cause of Death

An autopsy has since been completed, but it did not immediately solve the central mystery. The Coroner's Office said the investigation remained active and that no cause or manner of death had yet been established.

The examination did, however, rule out trauma as a contributing factor. As The Hollywood Reporter reported, the autopsy found:

"An autopsy was completed today. At autopsy, no signs of trauma were discovered that would have contributed to the death."

That finding is significant, but it does not explain why Panettiere died. The reported overdose classification on the 911 dispatch, the discovery of Narcan and the earlier reports about her history with substance abuse remain pieces of the picture — not an official explanation for her death.

Additional testing and the continuing investigation are still needed before authorities can determine the cause and manner of death.

The Man Who Was with Her in South Carolina

Hickerson's presence during Panettiere's final trip has also drawn attention because of the complicated history between the former couple. Panettiere and Hickerson were first linked in 2018, and their relationship later became the subject of domestic-violence allegations, arrests and court proceedings.

In 2019, Hickerson was charged with one felony count of injuring a spouse, cohabitant or girlfriend following an alleged physical altercation. He was released after posting a $50,000 bond. At that stage, a conviction could have carried a prison sentence of up to four years, according to the 2019 report.

In 2020, Hickerson was arrested in Wyoming after allegedly punching Panettiere in the face. Later charges in California included multiple felony counts involving alleged corporal injury and assault, as well as an allegation that he attempted to dissuade Panettiere as a witness.

In 2021, Hickerson pleaded no contest to two felony counts of injuring a spouse, cohabitant, girlfriend or child's parent. The remaining charges were dropped during sentencing.

He received 45 days in jail, four years of formal probation, 52 domestic-violence classes, $500 in restitution and a five-year protective order, according to People.

Hayden Panettiere had previously spoken publicly about the abuse she said she experienced and explained why she decided to cooperate with prosecutors.

Her attorney, Alan Jackson, described her as a survivor of years of psychological, emotional and severe physical abuse. Despite the painful history, Panettiere and Hickerson's relationship later became on-again, off-again. They were together again when they traveled to South Carolina shortly before her death.

There has been no allegation in the supplied reporting that Hickerson caused Panettiere's death, and the preliminary police investigation did not indicate foul play or suspicious circumstances.

Despite everything, they remained together for a long time. At this event, she was seen with Brian Hickerson at the celebration of life for Jansen Panettiere on March 8, 2023, in Palisades, New York. | Source: Getty Images

Her Final Public Chapter Ended Far from Hollywood

Panettiere's death was announced by her father, Skip, who described her as an extraordinary presence in the lives of those who knew her.

"She was an incredible light and a force of nature who brought immeasurable love and joy to all who knew her — and to the millions who watched her onscreen. We ask for privacy as our family takes time to process this unimaginable loss," he said.
