Lionel Richie was closing out a high-energy night at The Muny when something changed. During his final song, the 77-year-old singer made an unexpected request — and what happened after he left the stage gave the moment a very different meaning.

The August 29, 2026, concert in St. Louis had otherwise been filled with the kind of energy fans have come to expect from Richie, with the singer moving through decades of hits and keeping the crowd involved throughout the evening.

But there had been clues that something was not quite right. Richie's appearance at The Muny was a one-night-only concert that came shortly after he completed his 2026 "Sing a Song All Night Long" co-headlining tour with Earth, Wind & Fire.

The Night Was Filled With Hits, Jokes and a Few Revealing Comments

For much of the St. Louis show, Richie gave the audience exactly the kind of exuberant performance they had come to see. He launched into "Hello" before moving into "Running With the Night," then kept the set moving with "Stuck on You," "Sail On," "You Are" and "Dancing on the Ceiling."

The singer was also clearly in a playful mood, turning the sweltering conditions into another opportunity to connect with the crowd. "I could not stand the idea of me being on this stage sweating to death, and you all sitting in the seats — dry as a bone," Richie told the audience. "I just had to make you sweat just a little bit."

The set continued with songs from different chapters of his career, including a Commodores medley featuring "Fancy Dancer" and "Brick House."

One of the more emotional moments came during "Lady," when Richie appeared alongside video footage of his late friend and collaborator Kenny Rogers. The singer acknowledged just how difficult the song remained for him. "That's probably one of the hardest songs I've had to sing in my life, knowing how much I miss that crazy man," Richie said.

Later in the set, Richie paused the music to reflect on the wider world before launching into "We Are the World." Looking out at the crowd, he said it was "kind of unbelievable" to see people coming together when so much of the world seemed to suggest otherwise, calling the audience "the greatest family reunion" he had ever seen.

Richie described the night as "one of those special nights" and spoke about the importance of dignity, patience, understanding and setting a good example for children. At that point, the evening still felt celebratory — but Richie had already offered a subtle clue that something physical was weighing on him.

Richie Had Given Fans a Hint About His Health

Amid the music and jokes, Richie spoke openly about something that had been troubling him during the tour. "Some things have been happening on this tour that kind of shook me up a little bit, because I couldn't figure out what the hell was going on," he told the audience.

He explained that he had gone back to his doctor for answers and was told, "You are suffering from dehydration." That explanation appeared to inform what Richie was doing onstage that night. He reached for electrolytes during the performance, even admitting that he did not particularly enjoy drinking them.

"I'm telling you, this stuff is nasty — but it works," he said. Richie kept the mood light by sharing some of the unconventional advice he had received. He recalled an elderly fan recommending castor oil, while fellow "American Idol" judge Luke Bryan had jokingly suggested alcohol as a way to hydrate.

Despite the issue, Richie continued working through his extensive set without an intermission. And when the evening finally reached "All Night Long," he still had one last moment of audience interaction to deliver.

"Watching you dancing is a pleasure beyond compare," Richie said earlier in the night. "Watching you out of control is a pleasure beyond compare." However, near the end of the concert, the health issue became much harder to miss.

Then He Asked for a Chair

Witnesses told TMZ that Richie appeared to be struggling toward the end of the show. While performing "All Night Long," he asked his team to bring him a chair so he could sit down.

The request was striking because the finale is normally one of the most energetic portions of his set. A crew member brought out a black chair and positioned it behind him. Richie sat down and continued singing, still interacting with the crowd and raising an arm toward the audience.

He eventually stood again, wished everyone good night, bowed, and walked offstage. For those watching inside The Muny, however, the performance had not necessarily looked alarming.

Fans Said He Still Looked Remarkably Strong

Concertgoers later described Richie as being in high spirits for much of the evening. Sandy Burnstein said she noticed nothing concerning while watching the show.

"He looked like he was fine! It was an amazing concert. He was telling jokes, and I didn’t notice anything out of the ordinary," Burnstein said, adding that learning Richie had been hospitalized came as a surprise. "I was shocked! And actually I think I'm still in shock! Because he sounded wonderful and it's probably one of the best concerts I've ever seen!" she said.

Christy Measki also noticed that Richie was sweating heavily in the warm conditions. "He did make a few comments about being he needed his electrolytes and he was kind of joking around about it, but I mean it was a warm night at the Muny you know all the lights on and he was sweating a lot but his performance was unreal," Measki said.

She called it "the best concert I've ever been to." That contrast — a singer apparently delivering a memorable performance while quietly dealing with a physical problem — became even more striking after the show.

What Happened After the Applause

Richie checked himself into a St. Louis hospital after the Saturday night performance to have tests performed, according to TMZ. The outlet reported that doctors were looking into possible slight dehydration, while sources said Richie was being cautious and hoped to be discharged Tuesday.

The hospitalization was particularly notable because it was not his first health-related hospital visit of the summer. After news of the hospitalization emerged, people on Facebook continued to praise the concert itself.

St. Louis Fans Were Still Talking About His Energy

One attendee wrote, "Such a good show! He was funny too! Love knowing all the songs and they all were great!" Another said, "It was a fantastic show! He still sounds and looks great, and he was charming and personable! And then to see him at The Muny was perfect!"

A commenter simply declared, "He was amazing, funny, commanded the stage." Another wrote, "You did again, thank you." Other reactions expressed more concern in light of what happened afterward.

One person wrote, "It was a great show! But sorry to hear he was hospitalized afterwards. Prayers for Lionel!" Another said, "He still has his voice and put on a great show!" And someone else praised the way Richie had managed to get the audience on its feet: "He put on a tremendous show, we were so impressed he had everyone up and dancin [sic]!"

The enthusiastic reactions made the hospitalization feel all the more unexpected. Just over two months earlier, Richie had become ill during the opening night of his "Sing a Song All Night Long" tour with Earth, Wind & Fire.

The St. Louis Scare Wasn't His First This Summer

On June 24, Richie was performing at Grand Casino Arena in St. Paul, Minnesota, when he told the audience he felt "dizzy" and "strange." He sat down on a stage platform while singing "Dancing on the Ceiling," an unusually low-key way to perform a song that normally calls for considerably more movement.

Richie ultimately cut the concert short. After he left the stage, his saxophonist, Dino Soldo, told the audience that Richie was not feeling well and would be unable to continue.

Paramedics met Richie backstage and transported him to a hospital by ambulance as a precaution, according to TMZ. The incident forced the postponement of his June 26 show in Chicago and June 27 concert in Columbus, Ohio, after doctors advised him to rest and recover.

The following day, Richie's wife, Brenda Harvey Richie, reassured fans in an X post that he was OK and would return to the stage.

Fans Revisited the Moment Richie Stopped Performing

As clips from the June concert circulated on TikTok, viewers focused on the moment Richie realized he needed to slow down. Comments beneath videos showed viewers worrying about the singer's decision to sit down and leave the performance.

One viewer wrote, "He was smart, he knew something was wrong." Another said, "I can't watch. He's one of my favorites." The Singer Has Been Open About Health Problems Before

Richie's latest health scares also echoed an earlier period in his career when his ability to perform was genuinely threatened. During the 1990s, he developed an illness affecting his vocal cords and underwent four separate surgeries before doctors determined that diet-induced acid reflux was behind the problem.

In an interview with People, Richie described the experience as "about as close as you ever would've come to a nervous breakdown" because he feared he might never sing again.

"You don't want anybody fooling around down there. This is your identity," he said. "I never really thought that it would end."
