But there was no photographer, date, or location attached to the image, and there was no credible photographic record confirming that the apparent encounter had happened.

Why Natalie Harp's Name Quickly Entered the Conversation

Harp's name did not appear out of nowhere.

She has become a familiar figure around Trump, accompanying him during golf outings and other events and earning the nickname "the Human Printer" because of her practice of carrying a portable printer and producing hard copies of articles, emails, and other information for him.

Her role reportedly expanded beyond printing documents. According to reports, Harp became involved in communications and Trump's social media operation, giving her an unusually close position within his inner circle. That proximity has attracted scrutiny before, particularly because of accounts describing how determined she was to remain near Trump.

The Letter That Added to the Speculation

One reason social media viewers connected the mystery woman to Harp was a previously reported letter she allegedly wrote to Trump. The letter reportedly included an apology over an incident during a golf outing in Scotland, where Harp had been filmed running across the course to keep up with Trump's golf cart.

"I also am sorry if I was an embarrassment walking the course in Scotland," she allegedly wrote. She reportedly continued:

"I want things to always be right between us. I also know I've been distracted all week (forgetting to eat throughout the days, and even forgetting to sleep, and only catching a couple hours at a time)."

The letter was reportedly signed, "With all my heart, Natalie." Another letter attributed to Harp reportedly included the line, "You are all that matters to me," while she also thanked Trump for being her "Guardian and Protector in this Life."

Those reports have fueled online speculation about the nature of their relationship, although they do not establish a romantic relationship between the two.

There Were Other Stories About Her Close Access

The attention around Harp has also been fueled by reports about the extraordinary access she allegedly had to Trump. According to more reports, one incident involved a motorcade trip to court in New York in 2023. When Harp was reportedly told there was no room for her in Trump's vehicle, she allegedly ended up traveling in the trunk of an SUV so she could accompany him.

Her estranged brother, Preston Harp, later discussed the reported incident during a CNN interview and said he had not previously known about it.

"That's really funny. I didn't even know about that [...] It's actually kind of sad. That's obsession. That's like an unhealthy obsession with someone if you're going to jump into the trunk of their car, like," he said, according to the supplied background.

Then Came the Reports About Trump's Private Quarters

The reporting supplied for this story also described an alleged incident at Mar-a-Lago involving Melania Trump. According to excerpts from Alex Isenstadt's book Revenge: The Inside Story of Trump's Return to Power, Harp was reportedly found by the first lady in the president's private quarters late at night.

The account, also obtained by the Daily Mail, said, "Harp didn't do well with boundaries."

“There was the time when a surprised Melania Trump stumbled upon Harp late at night in Trump's private quarters at Mar-a-Lago, an area that was typically off-limits to those outside Trump's family," Isenstadt wrote. "Harp was there to deliver Trump some documents and didn't want to wait until the morning to give them to him."

That story became another part of the broader discussion about how unusually close Harp's access to the president appeared to be, although it still did not establish anything romantic between them.

Even the Nickname 'Fatal Attraction' Entered the Story

According to Isenstadt's book, some of Trump's advisers jokingly compared Harp to Glenn Close's character Alex Forrest from Fatal Attraction. The comparison reportedly related to what some people around Trump viewed as the intensity of Harp's attachment to him.

The nickname did not establish a romantic relationship between Harp and Trump. Rather, it reflected the sheer intensity of her devotion that reportedly unsettled some people around the campaign. Isenstadt wrote that Natalie had become effectively "unfireable." Despite frustration among some senior staffers, Donald continued to value her.

Steven Cheung, Trump's White House communications director, described Harp as a "trusted and valued member of President Trump's team" and praised her work ethic and dedication.

The speculation did not begin with the viral photograph. A Snopes report described an unproven affair rumor involving Trump and Harp, noting that reports about her close working relationship with the president had fueled speculation online without providing proof of inappropriate behavior.

Speaking to Stella Inger Escobedo, the first lady's representative, Marc Beckman had previously pushed back against what he described as gossip surrounding Harp.

Two versions of the picture were circulating online — one in high resolution and another in significantly lower resolution. The higher-quality version contained several details that raised questions about whether it had been created or manipulated using artificial intelligence.

Among the most noticeable issues was the woman's hand, which appeared to have too many fingers. The higher-resolution version also contained a watermark associated with OpenAI's generative AI tools, according to the Snopes investigation.

The lower-resolution version was much harder to assess because it was simply too blurry to reveal the same telltale details.

An AI Expert Wasn't Ready to Call Both Versions Fake

Hany Farid, co-founder of deepfake detection company Get Real, examined the images for Snopes. His assessment was strikingly different depending on which version he was looking at. Farid said the higher-resolution version was clearly AI, while the authenticity of the lower-resolution version remained "inconclusive."

That distinction matters because it means the available evidence did not establish thatevery version circulating online had been artificially generated. Snopes also noted that it could not find a credible source for the photograph.

The Image's Digital Trail Raised More Questions

A reverse-image search reportedly found the oldest example of the photograph as a thumbnail for a September 14 YouTube video uploaded by political commentator Keith Edwards. Edwards told Snopes that his thumbnail team had found the image online but said they did not create or alter the underlying image.

He also acknowledged that they had not independently verified the source or the identity of the woman in the picture. Because only the back of her head was visible, Edwards said he did not believe her identity could be confirmed from the image alone.

Snopes also reported that its searches did not find the image in credible news reports or photo repositories such as Getty Images or The Associated Press.

There Was Even a False Theory About an Old Trump Photo

As the picture circulated, some social media viewers claimed it was actually an old photograph of Trump greeting Norwegian golfer Suzann Pettersen with a cheek kiss.

That theory was also investigated and rejected. The older 2017 encounter happened in different circumstances, and the clothing worn by Trump and Pettersen did not match what appeared in the viral image.

So that explanation did not solve the mystery either.

While the image's authenticity was being debated, social media viewers had plenty of opinions about what they were seeing. One commenter called the image "The Moment of Truth. The new Melania," while another joked, "Blonde is his favorite color lol."

Others were more skeptical, with one user pointing out, "Their heads aren't even facing each other!"

Another commenter brought Melania Trump into the discussion, asking, "Anyone tag Melania on this?" The mixed reactions reflected just how quickly the unverified image became a talking point online, with some users debating what it supposedly showed and others questioning whether it was real at all.

Then Trump Posted Something of His Own

As the photograph continued circulating, Trump returned to Truth Social. He posted a picture of himself looking unhappy, with what appeared to be police officers in the background, and gave it a short caption:

"The Hoax Buster."

He offered no additional explanation alongside the post. The report described the image as appearing to be AI-generated as well, noting that Trump has previously shared AI-generated images on Truth Social.

But the post did not directly identify or address the viral photograph of the woman believed by social media users to be Harp.

And Then Came the White House Response

With the image continuing to circulate and questions growing over whether it was genuine, the White House was asked about it. The response was considerably shorter than the speculation surrounding the photograph. A White House spokesperson described the image as "clearly a fake photo."

That was the White House's stated position on the viral picture. The statement came as the image itself remained under scrutiny, with the higher-resolution version showing apparent AI indicators while the lower-resolution version had not been conclusively authenticated.
