Kristi and Bryon married in Watertown in 1992 and went on to have three children: Kassidy, Kennedy, and Booker. The National Governors Association (NGA) says Bryon grew up in Hamlin County.

After graduating from Northern State University with a degree in business finance, he coached basketball, worked on the family farm, and entered the insurance business. He eventually operated a crop insurance agency near the family's home in the Castlewood area.

As Kristi's political career increasingly took her away, she publicly credited Bryon with carrying many of the responsibilities at home.

"At our house, Bryon completes many of our chores," she wrote in a June 2019 column published by the South Dakota state government. "I am gone a lot, and he is left to handle all things related to kids, ranch, and house. I know that I am blessed to have a husband who recognizes how wonderful it is for me to come back to a clean house and tended family, and he tries to make that happen."

Kristi also described what the marriage had meant to her when it began. "I married Bryon because I loved him and wanted to build a life with him," she wrote. Seven years later, that marriage entered divorce proceedings.

The Filing Revealed a Split Months Before the Public Knew

The timing of the divorce was not immediately apparent when news of the split emerged. Court records obtained by USA Today show that Kristi filed for divorce on April 6, 2026, in Hamlin County.

The petition cited irreconcilable differences and listed May 23, 1992, as the couple's marriage date. But the filing remained outside public view for months.

The records were not posted online until September 28, according to the report. That meant the legal process had begun nearly six months before the case became widely known. Kristi's attorney, Michael Sabers, confirmed the divorce in a statement.

"Kristi Noem has filed for the dissolution of her marriage to Bryon Noem," the statement said. "She has great faith in the South Dakota judicial system and will reserve any further comments for the legal process."

Hours before reports of the case emerged, another detail appeared on Kristi's Instagram account.

Her Story featured Ella Langley's song "Loving Life Again" over a hunting photograph showing a dead moose with two people in the background.

The Month Before the Filing Brought Major Changes

Kristi's professional life changed shortly before she filed for divorce. President Donald Trump announced in March that she would leave her position as Homeland Security secretary.

He said Sen. Markwayne Mullin of Oklahoma would take over the department effective March 31, while Kristi would become special envoy for the Shield of the Americas.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced the transition on March 5. Kristi thanked Donald for the appointment and said she looked forward to working with other administration officials on security issues in the Western Hemisphere.

Her marriage was also facing public scrutiny that month.

In late March, the Daily Mail published allegations about Bryon's private online activity. The publication said it had reviewed photographs and hundreds of messages involving him and several women.

The report also alleged that Bryon sent at least $25,000 through Cash App and PayPal to online contacts.

According to the publication, Bryon did not deny having explicit conversations or sharing photographs of himself dressed as a woman when contacted for comment. He disputed concerns raised in the report about whether his private conduct could pose a national-security risk.

The publication also quoted former intelligence officials who said undisclosed private conduct could potentially create a vulnerability to blackmail. The report did not establish that Bryon had been blackmailed or that national security had been compromised.

Kristi's representatives later responded to the allegations in comments to the New York Post. "Ms. Noem is devastated," they said. "The family was blindsided by this, and they ask for privacy and prayers at the time."

A Family Member Had Already Raised a Question About the Marriage

Earlier that same month, another account offered a glimpse into how one member of the family viewed Bryon's decision to remain in the marriage. The earlier report quoted an unnamed relative who said Bryon believed supporting Kristi was a religious calling.

"He said he decided about 20 years ago that it was his calling from God to support her in whatever she decided to do," the family member said. "So he has put up with the humiliation. We will see if he sticks with her now."

The relative then returned to the question of how long that commitment could last. "I think it's him honoring the calling from God," the family member added. "But it seems like there would be some limit to that."
