Former SF Deputy Police Chief, 65, and Daughter, 24, Killed at Home — Friend Reveals Troubling Secret About Her Marriage

On Saturday, Kevin Mannix was proudly telling a neighbor about his son's achievements. Less than 24 hours later, one of his daughters would be escaping their family home to call 911, and two people she loved would never come out alive.

The tragedy stunned a quiet California neighborhood. But as friends began remembering their final conversations with 65-year-old Ann Mannix, a very different picture of her family life started to emerge — including a conversation she had just two weeks before her death.

The Conversation Nobody Thought Twice About

It was an ordinary Saturday in Strawberry, California, on October 10, 2026. Families were going about their usual routines, and one neighbor had a friendly conversation with 68-year-old Kevin Mannix, a retired San Francisco police sergeant who had raised three children with his wife, Ann.

Kevin had been bragging about his son's accomplishments, the neighbor later recalled. It was the sort of family conversation that might have been forgotten by Monday morning, had something devastating not happened the following afternoon.

Meanwhile, Kevin's wife, Ann, had been enjoying the freedom that came after a long career. Having retired as a San Francisco deputy police chief in 2021, she finally had more time for basketball, friends, and the activities she loved.

On Wednesday, October 7, Ann attended a Golden State Valkyries playoff game at Chase Center, watching the team defeat the Las Vegas Aces. Basketball had always been special to her, and she was still enjoying it at 65, decades after first discovering her talent for the sport.

On Sunday, October 11, Ann was still sharing happy moments from San Francisco's Fleet Week celebrations. Her photographs showed the Blue Angels flying over the city, a familiar local tradition she continued to enjoy.

"I never tire of the show," she wrote in one of her final social media posts. Nothing about those public updates revealed what was about to happen at her house — or how quickly an ordinary weekend would become a tragedy.

Then Someone Ran Out of the House

By late Sunday afternoon, the peaceful atmosphere on Strawberry Circle had changed completely. A woman standing outside with her daughter suddenly heard a man shouting from the neighboring Mannix property, where something terrifying was unfolding.

Moments later, a man ran through the gate and desperately asked for help. "Please call 911, he has a gun!" he shouted, before the neighbor heard the sound of gunfire coming from the house.

Other residents also heard the gunshots, and police vehicles soon began arriving in the neighborhood. Several people contacted emergency services, while a family member was seen running down the road, crying and screaming before reaching a friend's arms.

One longtime neighbor remembered watching the person leave with the friend shortly afterward. The neighbor had known the family for years, but what had happened inside the house remained unclear until more details emerged from the emergency calls.

At approximately 5:03 p.m., emergency dispatchers began receiving reports of gunfire from Strawberry Circle. One caller was particularly important because she had witnessed the terrifying situation from inside the home, rather than hearing it from the street.

She told dispatchers that her father had shot her mother and sister with a handgun. The caller also reported hearing approximately six to nine gunshots, while trying to protect herself from the violence.

But the 911 Caller Was No Stranger

The caller was Ann and Kevin's other daughter, who had been inside the property during the shooting. A local reportindependently confirmed her identity as the surviving sibling who managed to escape and contact 911.

Emergency recordings revealed that she had locked herself inside a bedroom. As deputies arrived, she escaped through a window, making it out of the house while the situation was still unfolding.

The surviving daughter's husband also called 911, while neighbors continued reporting what they had heard. Another account described how a family member escaped the property as another hid inside before fleeing through a window.

Journalist Dan Noyes later highlighted the detail that the surviving daughter had been inside the house before escaping. She was not simply a relative receiving devastating news afterward — she had been there when the shooting happened.

The Marin County Sheriff's Office arrived within minutes and secured the area before entering the residence. Inside, officers discovered three deceased family members: Ann Mannix, her 24-year-old daughter Katherine "Katie" Mannix, and Kevin Mannix.

Investigators identified Kevin as the suspected shooter in what they described as a double murder-suicide. Ann and Katie had been killed in their own home, while Kevin was believed to have died by suicide.

The officers' findings were preliminary, and the investigation continued after the scene was secured. For the family's surviving children, however, the immediate reality was already devastating: their mother and younger sister were gone.

And the youngest victim had been preparing for a future that, just days earlier, was still full of possibilities.

She Was So Close to Her Dream

At just 24, Katie Mannix was preparing to become a nurse. She had been studying for a profession in which she hoped to help others, following a path already taken by her older sister, Lauren.

Her cousin Brendan Mannix remembered how excited she had been about her plans. But what he missed most was not her career ambition — it was the way Katie made the people around her feel loved.

Katie had a habit of sending unexpected messages to relatives and friends. Sometimes she simply wanted to say she loved them; other times, she reached out because she thought someone could use a little encouragement.

In a heartbreaking tribute, Brendan remembered that Katie had "such a big heart" and a gift for making other people feel special. He also spoke about the dreams she had been so eager to fulfill.

A longtime family friend remembered Katie's lighter side, describing her as fun, silly, and the life of the party. She was someone who enjoyed being around others and whose personality left an impression on people who knew her.

And while Katie was preparing to start her professional life, her mother had already completed a remarkable career. Ann had spent decades raising her children while working in one of San Francisco's most demanding professions, and she was finally enjoying more time outside the department.

Ann's older brother, Richard Corriea, remembered her as a devoted mother who could manage professional responsibilities without losing the warmth she showed her family. He had served in the police department himself and knew how seriously she took both parts of her life.

"She was a star and a great mom," he remembered. Those who knew Ann through work described a confident leader, but her closest friends remembered someone who enjoyed ordinary pleasures and looked forward to spending time with the people she loved.

Back When They Imagined a Different Future

Long before retirement, Ann had spoken about the future she wanted. In a 1989 interview, while still a young police officer, she talked about her hopes for a home and children, even as she was building a career in a male-dominated profession.

She married Kevin, who was then working as an investigator for the San Francisco District Attorney's Office. Over the following decades, the couple raised their family while both continued their careers in law enforcement.

Ann went on to become the first woman to join and later lead the department's SWAT team. But even after rising to deputy chief, she remained approachable, supporting younger officers and encouraging other women to pursue leadership opportunities.

By 2021, after 35 years with the department, she felt it was time to retire. In an interview, she discussed plans to travel, play tennis, exercise, and spend more time with Kevin and their three children.

Kevin had retired three years before his wife, after serving 27 years with the police department. His farewell message expressed gratitude for the friendships he had developed and described his hopes of spending more time with family.

The two were now entering a stage of life without the daily pressures of police work. Both had publicly spoken about wanting more family time, although their marriage would later become the subject of painful conversations among people who knew them.

But That Wasn't the Man Everyone Remembered

When the news of the shooting spread, people who had worked alongside Kevin struggled to understand it. Former colleagues remembered a man who seemed friendly, approachable, and far removed from the violent behavior investigators later attributed to him.

Retired San Francisco Police Captain Alexa O'Brien had known both Kevin and Ann professionally. She recalled that Kevin appeared relatively reserved beside his wife, whose confidence and strong personality often made her the more commanding presence.

Other former officers offered similar memories of Kevin. Retired BART Police Chief Gary Gee remembered him as well-liked in the neighborhood, while Montoya recalled someone who tried to bring humor into ordinary conversations.

Investigators also reported that there had been no previous police calls for service at the family's address. There was no reported history of officers being summoned there before the deadly shooting.

But not every neighbor remembered Kevin in exactly the same way. One resident recalled that he had made a poor first impression years earlier, criticizing other households about how they maintained their properties.

Those memories differed from the warm descriptions offered by his former colleagues. And while people were trying to reconcile those versions of Kevin, Ann's recent conversations with her own friends were beginning to reveal another side of her life.

There Was Another Side to Her Happiness

Ann had remained close to a childhood friend she had known since they were both five years old. The women grew up across the street from one another in San Francisco's Richmond District, sharing childhood adventures before eventually moving to different states.

Their friendship lasted more than six decades. Even when they could not see each other regularly, they reportedly spoke around twice a week, keeping up with one another's lives as their families grew and changed.

During that summer visit, the women enjoyed familiar activities together. They swam, went out for meals, and spent time catching up, just as they had done throughout their long friendship.

But their conversations were not limited to happy memories. Ann had been discussing her relationship with Kevin, and her friend would later acknowledge that things between the couple had not been going well.

At the same time, Ann had maintained another friendship with Marie Hurabiell, a San Francisco attorney and community activist. The two women had worked together on public-safety initiatives after Ann retired, and Hurabiell had recently seen her at a social gathering.

That meeting took place approximately two weeks before the shooting. Looking back on it, Hurabiell remembered Ann as unusually happy about a major change she was preparing to make in her personal life.

What She Confided Just Two Weeks Before

At the party, Ann told Hurabiell that she was getting divorced from Kevin. She had been looking ahead to life after the marriage and, rather than sounding defeated by the situation, appeared genuinely excited about what the future could bring.

Hurabiell later recalled that Ann understood divorce would not be easy. Still, she remembered her friend being full of hope and joy, eager to move forward with her life.

Ann had not presented the separation as something she regretted. She told Hurabiell that she was happy about the decision, with the end of the marriage appearing to offer the possibility of a fresh start after years together.

In another account, Hurabiell described Kevin as possessive and resistant to letting his wife move on. She acknowledged that she did not know him well, meaning her characterization was a personal impression rather than an established account of his behavior.

Ann's childhood friend also remembered their conversations about the marriage. "We talked about her relationship with her husband," she recalled, before offering a brief but troubling description: "It wasn't great."

The friend did not publicly identify a particular event that explained the fatal shooting. But the accounts of two women close to Ann painted a different picture from the retirement plans she and Kevin had once shared.

Even His Former Colleagues Couldn't Believe It

O'Brien's memories of Kevin offered a striking contrast to what Hurabiell had described. The retired captain called him "vanilla," explaining that he did not come across as a forceful or dominating personality during their professional interactions.

She also remembered the physical contrast between the spouses. Ann was noticeably taller, and O'Brien recalled that anyone looking at the couple would probably have assumed Ann was the tougher one.

For O'Brien, nothing about the Kevin she knew through work suggested that he would commit such violence. Yet Hurabiell's recollections suggested that the private marriage had been troubled, and that Ann had reached the point of wanting to leave.

Investigators have not established that the divorce was the motive for the killings. The friends' statements offer accounts of Ann's marital difficulties, but they do not establish why the shooting happened or what occurred immediately before it.

She Was Still Waiting for One More Family Milestone

There was another part of Ann's future that her oldest friend remembered particularly well. After raising her own three children, Ann had been looking forward to becoming a grandmother, hoping that another generation would soon join the family.

Her friend remembered that wish alongside Ann's warm personality and love of other people. She had known Ann since childhood, watched her build a career and family, and understood how much she still wanted to experience.

Katie had been looking forward, too. At 24, she was preparing to follow her older sister into nursing, carrying the same enthusiasm for helping others that relatives remembered in her mother.

Now the surviving Mannix children are facing life without their mother and younger sister. One daughter escaped the house and helped summon police, while both surviving siblings are left to mourn two family members whose plans ended on the same afternoon.

In the days before the shooting, Ann had been spending time with friends, following her favorite sports, and talking about the future. Katie was preparing to begin her nursing career, with years of personal and professional milestones still ahead of her.

One was ready to begin a new chapter; the other was only starting to write hers. Neither got the chance to live the life she had been planning, and the family members who survived must now move forward without them.
