New Body Cam Footage Surfaces in Kohen Wiley Case as Officer's Account Contradicts What His Mother Says She Did
New police body camera footage captures an officer saying nobody knew 1-year-old Kohen Wiley was inside a vehicle involved in a fatal police shooting in Mississippi.
Kohen's mother previously said she tried to show officers her baby was in the car. Newly surfaced body camera footage raises questions about whether police saw him before opening fire.
The recording captures a conversation between officers after the June 14, 2026, shooting that killed 1-year-old Kohen Wiley in Senatobia, Mississippi.
The video published by Darkhorse Press shows officers speaking outside Highland Hills Medical Center, where their discussion turned to the child's presence inside the vehicle.
A Walmart Shoplifting Call Ended With Kohen Wiley's Death
Police responded to a reported shoplifting incident at a Walmart on U.S. Highway 51 in Senatobia on June 14.
According to the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation (MBI), officers from the Senatobia Police Department and Tate County Sheriff's Office encountered two people and a young child fleeing the store into a vehicle.
Investigators said the driver moved toward officers as they attempted to stop the vehicle, nearly striking one of them. An officer opened fire, and the vehicle fled the scene.
The occupants later arrived at a local hospital, where Kohen was pronounced dead. Another person suffered critical injuries. No officers sustained serious physical injuries.
The MBI launched an investigation and said its findings would be forwarded to the Mississippi Attorney General's Office.
Kohen's Mother Described Trying to Alert Officers
Vellesiya Wiley shared her account of the shooting days after her son's death.
In a June 18 video posted by civil rights attorney Ben Crump on X, she described an effort to make her child visible during the confrontation.
"I raised my baby up trying to show them that he was in the car," she said.
Crump also said the officer who fatally shot Kohen had been placed on administrative leave. He called for the release of all body camera and surveillance footage and demanded a transparent investigation.
Body Camera Video Captures a Question About the Baby
The footage shows officers standing near a black Senatobia Police vehicle outside Highland Hills Medical Center. One officer wearing a body camera described a woman as a "Black female" while speaking with another officer.
As the conversation continued, the officer acknowledged, "That's what they was telling me, so I can't confirm nor deny." Another officer then asked, "Didn't you see a baby in her lap?"
"Nobody knew the baby was there. All I saw was two females in the car. All I saw," the officer wearing the body camera replied.
State Officials Found the Officer's Use of Force Justified
The conversation has surfaced after Mississippi officials completed their investigation into the shooting.

On October 20, 2026, the Associated Press reported that the state's attorney general had determined the officer was justified in using force. The finding followed investigators' conclusion that the vehicle was driving toward police when the officer fired.
The decision came after months of mourning and calls for justice over Kohen's death.
It remains unclear whether investigators reviewed the conversation before Mississippi's attorney general ruled the shooting justified. The footage also leaves unanswered what the officer who fired at the vehicle saw before opening fire.
