While the spotlight now shines on his new relationship, Pitt has also opened up about the final chapter of his past with his ex-wife.

As reported on May 29, he broke his silence about the divorce settlement with Angelina Jolie during an exclusive interview. Though their marriage was brief, they share six children.

When asked if life felt any different now that the divorce had officially ended, the Oklahoma-born movie actor responded, "No, I don't think it was that major of a thing. Just something coming to fruition. Legally."

Pitt and Jolie's long and complicated divorce finally came to an end eight years after it began. The two agreed on a settlement on December 30, 2024, as confirmed by Jolie's legal team. Following her decision to end the marriage, Jolie took a step back from their shared life with Pitt and moved forward with the kids.

Her attorney, James Simon, explained the journey in a statement, "She and the children left all of the properties they had shared with Mr. Pitt, and since that time she has focused on finding peace and healing for their family. [...] Frankly, Angelina is exhausted, but she is relieved this one part is over."

As that chapter closed, more insight into Jolie's approach quietly emerged. A source close to the two-time Academy Award winner shared in an interview, "She doesn't speak ill of [Pitt] publicly or privately. She's been trying hard to be light after a dark time."

Though the humanitarian stayed quiet about her ex-husband, the situation behind closed doors grew more complex. After she focused on healing with her children, the reasons behind the lengthy court process became clearer.

James J. Sexton, a divorce lawyer based in New York City, explained in an interview that divorce can get very complicated, especially when it involves children or shared businesses. "There's almost no limit to how many things you can fight about," he noted.

Before the legal disputes began, Pitt and Jolie shared a life filled with love and family. They have children together — Maddox, Pax, Zahara, Shiloh, and twins Knox and Vivienne. After nine years as a couple, they got married in August 2014 during a small ceremony in France.

Their wedding followed a joyful moment that happened two years earlier. In 2012, Jolie revealed a custom engagement ring designed by Pitt, marking the next step in their relationship before they eventually wed.

That joyful time soon gave way to serious problems. Jolie filed for divorce in September 2016 after two years of marriage, citing irreconcilable differences. She requested physical custody of their kids and asked that Pitt be granted visitation. Her request did not include joint physical custody, only joint legal custody.

People familiar with the situation said Jolie was unhappy with how Pitt handled parenting. They claimed she had concerns about his use of marijuana, possible alcohol use, and what she believed to be anger issues. These concerns led her to believe the environment was not safe for the children.

Her attorney at the time, Robert Offer, stated that she made the decision for the health of the family. There was no other person involved, and Jolie, who is represented by divorce lawyer Laura Wasser, did not ask for spousal support.

The Los Angeles native's choice to end the marriage came after a flight she described as deeply upsetting for both her and the children. FBI records later revealed that during that trip on September 14, 2016, the actress said Pitt screamed at her, grabbed her head, shook her, and forced her against a bathroom wall.

The filmmaker also claimed he struck the plane's ceiling during the argument. She explained that their children, then between the ages of 8 and 15, were terrified. When one of them called the film producer a name, he allegedly rushed toward the child.

Jolie said she stepped in and held him by the neck to stop him. In response, the actor is said to have pushed her into the seats, hurting her back and elbow.

Following the serious claims tied to the flight, the pair took a different path to move the process forward. Pitt and Jolie shared a joint statement explaining they agreed to settle their divorce matters in private.

They decided to use a private judge to keep all legal steps confidential and out of the public eye. The statement also noted that both sides and their lawyers signed papers to protect the privacy of their children and the family. It ended with a clear message, "The parents are committed to act as a united front to effectuate recovery and reunification."

Their shared promise to work together came during a tense period. At the time, the exes had been exchanging serious claims in documents filed with the Los Angeles Superior Court. Still, they both agreed to keep private any sensitive information involving their children.

While they worked to protect their children's privacy, progress continued behind the scenes. Pitt and Jolie had their divorce bifurcated, meaning the court separated the end of their marriage from the rest of the legal issues.

In 2019, they were both declared legally single. Pitt has since been in a relationship with de Ramon, a jewelry executive based in Los Angeles. The couple attended a public event together for the first time at the 2024 British Grand Prix.

Pitt and Jolie's divorce took eight years to settle, marked by custody issues and public claims. The process included serious accusations, including an incident on a private plane.

Still, both agreed to keep matters involving their kids confidential. Legal steps like bifurcation helped finalize parts of the case sooner. Now, with the settlement complete, they have officially moved on.
