NYC Family Heartbroken After 7-Month-Old's Tragic Loss — What Father Discovered
"I want justice," a grieving mother lamented after tragedy struck her seven-month-old child.
A quiet afternoon in Brooklyn turned into a scene of chaos in seconds — but the most haunting details didn't emerge until later. What began as confusion would unravel into a tragedy that left a family shattered and a city searching for answers.
The violence unfolded quickly — but where it happened would soon become just as important as how it began.

Where the Tragedy Happened
According to the New York Times, the shooting unfolded when a gunman riding on the back of a motorbike opened fire on a group of people. The violence erupted near Humboldt and Moore Streets in East Williamsburg around 1:15 p.m.
Police said the suspects were speeding the wrong way before the passenger pulled out a gun and began firing at a group of several adults and children outside the Sem Sem Deli.
The moped later crashed into an oncoming car as the suspects attempted to flee. By late afternoon, two helicopters whirred overhead as dozens of police officers scanned the sidewalk for evidence in front of the deli on Humboldt Street.

It was unclear what led to the shooting and who was the intended target. Officials did not release the name of the suspect, who had not been formally arrested or charged by Wednesday evening.
Amid the chaos on that Brooklyn street, one family found themselves directly in the line of fire.
Who Was Impacted by the Gunfire
A seven-month-old baby girl was killed after a stray bullet tore through the Brooklyn street in broad daylight. The child, later identified as Kaori Patterson-Moore, was struck while sitting in a stroller with her family.
Kaori was with her parents and her two-year-old brother when the shooting happened. Her brother was grazed by a bullet, surviving the attack but left traumatized.
In those first moments, the family didn't yet realize how serious the situation had become.

When Confusion Set In
The baby's mother, Lianna Charles-Moore, said they heard loud pops but assumed it was something harmless. Kaori was seated with her brother in a double stroller when "something went off" near Humboldt and Moore Streets in East Williamsburg.
According to the New York Post, Lianna, in a phone conversation, said:
"We thought it was fireworks, but my son jumped out of the stroller, and I picked him up and carried him."
Why the Moment Turned Deadly
Within seconds, what seemed harmless at first would reveal a far more devastating reality. "I was hugging him, and then when I looked to my left, my daughter was just there, lying there. She was shot in the head. She was just bleeding. It was just too much," she said.
The child was not believed to be the intended target, and investigators are still working to determine who the gunman was aiming for.

Kaori's Life Was Just Beginning
As the shock settled, the family began sharing who Kaori was. "She just started saying, 'Mama,' she just started, like, almost about to crawl, like it was just a whole bunch of stuff that she was just learning how to do," her mother said.
Relatives described her as a happy, giggling baby who was "always laughing." Her grandmother, Linda Moore Oyinkoinyan, said she collapsed at work after receiving the news.
"My daughter called me at my job. She was screaming. I had to hang up on her. She was scaring me. She said, 'They shot Kaori in the head.' She was screaming. She was frantic. I just passed out in the class,” she said.
As grief spread beyond the family, city leaders began responding to the tragedy.
Officials Speak Out
City leaders responded with grief and urgency. According to the New York Times, the Mayor of New York, Zohran Mamdani, at a news conference on Wednesday, called the killing "a devastating reminder of how much more work has to be done to combat gun violence across this city."
"We cannot accept this as normal in our city," he said. "We cannot be numb to this pain." Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch added, "As a mother, I cannot imagine the pain."
But while officials spoke, those who witnessed the shooting firsthand were still grappling with what they had seen.

How Witnesses Experienced It
People nearby described a sudden shift from normalcy to panic. "All of a sudden I heard a shot — real loud," one witness said, adding, "The mother's screaming, 'Baby, baby, baby! The baby's shot!'"
Another witness, Bernius Maldonado, 31, had been at the Moore Street Market with her partner, Joshua Rodriguez, 33, buying fish fritters for lunch that afternoon.
As she left the store, she heard at least two snaps and suddenly felt pain in her legs, initially thinking someone had thrown firecrackers.
"It was burning my legs; I didn't know what hit me," Bernius said, showing bloody marks on the back of her calf where Mr. Rodriguez said he had extracted bits of metal.
Among those moments, one stood out — a father's reaction that witnesses say they cannot forget.
How the Father Responded
Then came the moment that witnesses say they cannot forget. According to the publication, as the baby's mother collapsed beside the stroller, Kaori's father picked her up.
But something was wrong. "She was lifeless," Bernius said. For a brief moment, he appeared unsure what to do — as if reality hadn't fully set in until she shouted at him to rush the baby to the hospital.
Then everything changed. "He grabbed the baby, he just ran," she said. According to the chief of detectives at the Police Department, Joseph E. Kenny, the infant did not survive after she was rushed to Woodhull Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
As that moment unfolded, investigators were already beginning to piece together what had happened.
What Investigators Later Found
Authorities later released surveillance images capturing the suspect firing from the back of a moped. The footage also showed the suspects crashing shortly after the shooting, throwing the passenger onto the pavement.
One man is now in custody, while police continue searching for another suspect. While the investigation continues, the family is left facing a loss that cannot be undone.
The Family's Grief and a Plea for Justice
Kaori's mother says the pain is unbearable. "My daughter was innocent. She didn’t deserve that," Lianna said.
"We were just going outside to go get her a few things, and my son a few things. My son got impacted with everything that happened, yeah, so it was just too much, because they could have killed my son and my daughter," the grieving mother added.
And through that grief, one message remains clear. "I want justice," she said. Even with that plea, some moments — and questions — continue to linger.
What Remains Unanswered
Even as the investigation continues, certain moments refuse to fade. The image of the suspect mid-attack. And a father running, holding his child, in a desperate race against time.
Together, they leave behind a haunting question: How did a single moment of violence change everything forever?
