Brandon Clarke Was Due in Court Days Before His Death
The NBA player was pronounced dead Monday after emergency responders were called to a Los Angeles home around 5 p.m., according to TMZ. The outlet reported authorities are investigating the death as a possible overdose after drug paraphernalia was allegedly found inside the residence.
But as details surrounding Clarke’s death emerged, court documents obtained by the media outlet revealed the 29-year-old had also been scheduled to appear before an Arkansas judge on May 15 in connection with multiple criminal charges tied to an April traffic stop.

According to the records, prosecutors charged Clarke with felony trafficking of a controlled substance after authorities allegedly discovered illegal narcotics during the stop. The substances reportedly included Kratom, a pain-relief substance regulated differently across the United States.
Clarke was also charged with felony fleeing in a vehicle exceeding the posted speed limit after authorities alleged he attempted to evade officers during the incident.

The filings further list three misdemeanor charges: possession of a Schedule VI controlled substance under four ounces, improper passing on the left, and speeding more than 15 miles over the limit. Following Clarke's death, the criminal case can no longer proceed.

According to the NBA, one of his most serious setbacks came on March 19, 2025, when he suffered a right knee injury that required offseason surgery and sidelined him for eight months.

The athlete returned in December 2025 during Memphis' win over the Minnesota Timberwolves, recording six points, three offensive rebounds, an assist, and a steal in nearly 17 minutes.
His return marked one of the few positive moments in an injury-filled season for the Grizzlies. After the game, Clarke said he felt encouraged by his recovery progress.

"I can jump higher than I did last year, according to the trainers," Clarke said. "I'm feeling good. Just keep working and everything is going to come together nicely."
Clarke's death followed another loss that affected the basketball community in late 2025, when former NBA player Elden "Easy E" Campbell died unexpectedly at 57. His family later shared details about the hours leading up to his death.

According to the New York Post, Campbell's sister, Sandra, revealed the heartbreaking final moments of his life: he had gone to Florida on Monday, December 1, and collapsed suddenly after returning to shore. "It was all of a sudden," she said. "He wasn't sick. He was out fishing."
