Nearly eight months after his parents were killed inside their Brentwood home, Jake Reiner has decided to break his silence. In a new interview, he described the moment his world changed and the toll it has taken on him since.

He also addressed why he has largely avoided speaking about his younger brother, who now sits behind bars awaiting trial. What Jake shared paints a rawer picture of grief than anything made public before.

A Phone Call He Almost Ignored

Jake, 35, sat down for his first extended interview with KABC-TV's Marc Cota-Robles since his parents, director Rob Reiner and photographer Michele Singer Reiner, were stabbed to death on December 14, 2025.

He was at Union Station in Los Angeles, attending a celebration of life for a friend, when his sister Romy, 28, first tried to reach him. Jake let the call go. He figured it could wait.

When Romy called back immediately, a sudden wave of panic hit him. He knew right away that something was terribly wrong. What she said next is a moment Jake still recalls in exact detail.

"Romy told me our dad was dead, and then she said, 'I can't find Mom,'" Jake recalled. "And I immediately went into shock. I need to get out of this train station, and I need to get to my parents' house."

Jake rushed straight to his family's Brentwood property, where his sister had made the harrowing discovery inside.

Walking Into His Own Family's Crime Scene

Having worked for years as a local news reporter, Jake was no stranger to covering crime scenes across the city. But nothing prepared him to find one at his parents' front door.

Stepping into the house where he grew up and seeing it treated as a homicide scene left him disoriented in a way his career never had.

He describes the last eight months as a strange blur of time — somehow feeling like eight years, eight minutes, and eight months all at once, because every morning brings the reality crashing back.

Processing the unimaginable loss has proven excruciatingly difficult, with Jake sharing that his grief often transforms into pure, unadulterated rage.

He's been in therapy trying to process a loss that, in his words, keeps turning into frustration over how unfair it was, and over having no choice or ability to stop the tragic event from happening.

No matter what evidence eventually comes out in court, Jake said there is one thing he doesn't expect to change: he doubts he will ever understand why it happened.

Why He Won't Talk About Nick

The situation is further complicated by his 32-year-old brother, Nick Reiner, who was arrested hours later near USC. Throughout the interview, Jake repeatedly declined to discuss his brother Nick, 32, or any alleged role in their parents' deaths.

He would only say that his parents loved all three of their children without condition, and that they never gave up trying to help Nick through his struggles with addiction.

Nick had spoken publicly about his addiction before, teaming up with his father on the 2015 film "Being Charlie," loosely based on his own experience. Jake sees the project now as his father's attempt to reach his brother in the only way he knew how.

Throughout the conversation, Jake struggled to put his feelings into words, noting that losing his parents also meant losing Nick. Now, only he and Romy remain to pick up the pieces as the legal system takes center stage.

Where the Case Stands Now

As we previously reported, the case entered a new phase when a Los Angeles County grand jury approved charges tied to the deaths of his parents, Rob and Michele Reiner.

Prosecutors unsealed the indictment on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, after the grand jury returned it on July 20. Nick, 32, remains in custody without bond as the case proceeds.

The Grand Jury's Decision Changes the Case

According to ABC News, the grand jury indictment meant the previously expected preliminary hearing would no longer take place, allowing the case to proceed under the new charges.

Rob and Michele Reiner were found fatally stabbed in their Brentwood home on December 14, 2025. Nick was living on his parents' property at the time, and sources said he had argued with his father at a holiday party the night before their deaths and was later seen behaving unusually.

Following his arrest, prosecutors charged Nick with two counts of murder and accused him of using a knife as a deadly weapon. The case also carried a special-circumstance allegation involving multiple murders.

Prosecutors Say Nick Reiner Acted by Lying in Wait

Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman said, "The indictment unsealed today also adds a special circumstance allegation that the defendant committed the murders by means of lying in wait."

The new allegation adds to the existing special circumstance involving multiple murders and could affect the penalties Nick faces if convicted. Hochman said the indictment brings prosecutors closer to trial and to what he described as achieving justice in the case.

If convicted as charged, Nick could face life in state prison without the possibility of parole or the death penalty.

The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office has not yet decided whether it will seek the death penalty. Nick's case is scheduled to return to court on September 15.

The recent grand jury development also puts Nick's earlier court appearances into sharper context, including a February 23 hearing that drew attention not only for the legal decisions made that day, but also for his appearance and behavior in court.

At the time, Nick pleaded not guilty to two counts of first-degree murder in connection with the fatal stabbing deaths of his parents, according to CNN.

He waived his right to a speedy preliminary hearing, bail was denied, and a preliminary hearing was tentatively scheduled for April 29. The charges carried a maximum sentence of life in prison without parole or the death penalty.

Hochman said prosecutors had not yet decided whether they would seek capital punishment, explaining that the decision would involve reviewing "all aggravating and mitigating circumstances." Another significant development also came to light.

Who Is Paying for Nick Reiner's Defense Now?

According to TMZ, his siblings, Romy and Jake Reiner, were no longer covering the cost of his legal representation. Sources with direct knowledge told the outlet they had no plans to retain a private criminal defense attorney on his behalf.

Shortly after the deaths, Romy and Jake had hired high-profile attorney Alan Jackson to represent their brother. However, Jackson later withdrew from the case because of what was described as an undisclosed disagreement.

A public defender was appointed last month, initially appearing to be a temporary arrangement. But during Monday's hearing, Deputy Public Defender Kimberly Greene appeared in court and entered a not guilty plea on Nick's behalf — suggesting the arrangement may now be long-term.

One source familiar with the situation told TMZ, "Nick's defense is Nick's defense. They're not involved." But beyond the legal maneuvering, it was Nick himself who became the focus of intense scrutiny.

The Look Draws Attention

Inside the courtroom, Nick appeared with a closely shaved head and wore brown prison-issued overalls. Shackles were fastened around his wrists as he sat behind Greene.

In footage from the hearing shared by Extra TV on YouTube, Reiner's expression appeared tense and fixed at times, his eyes wide as he looked toward the front of the courtroom. In other moments, he stared downward, jaw set, shoulders slightly hunched.

It was that stare that viewers immediately noticed. On Instagram, one commenter wrote, "His eyes are telling 👀." Another reacted bluntly, "Crazy eyes."

A third offered a more emotional take, "How sad. This is still someone's baby boy. Unrecognizable. Was so handsome years ago. How sad the toll mental health issues can take on a person. Sad situation all around. If he is of sound mind now imagine the pain he's living."

On the same platform, additional viewers shared similar reactions. "Very sad for all involved 😢," a different viewer wrote, while someone else observed, "The eyes never lie."

Expert Offers Interpretation of Nick's Behavior

Body language expert and author Susan Constantine told Page Six that she observed a fleeting moment that stood out to her in the footage.

"There is a really interesting smirk where his head goes down and then he smiles," Constantine said, adding that he appeared to be "trying to conceal his emotions."

She referred to Nick's expression as "duper's delight." The expert explained:

"'Duper's delight' is when a person gets a sense or rush or enjoyment...You will see that it's almost like a sinister smile and it kind of leaks out at the most inappropriate moments."

According to Susan, the expression suggested what she described as "an unconscious smirk of a sense of enjoyment or elation or excitement." She added that once he appeared to recognize the expression, he quickly "changed his behavior."

Beyond the smile, the expert also pointed to visible tension in his facial muscles, particularly in his forehead and eyes, which she said suggested worry, fear, and heightened intensity.

While that moment drew scrutiny, it was not the first time Nick appeared in court in this case. Nick made his initial appearance in Los Angeles Superior Court on Wednesday, December 17, 2025. During the proceedings, he spoke when the judge asked him a question.

Shackled Defendant Appears in Glass-Enclosed Area

Clad in a blue anti-suicide smock and bound at the wrists and ankles with shackles, Nick made a subdued but haunting appearance inside the court. Separated from the courtroom by a sheet of thick glass, he sat and stared straight ahead.

As the courtroom settled into a heavy silence, Nick's attorney, Alan, dressed sharply in a suit, addressed Judge Theresa McGonigle with a request to delay the arraignment.

"Your Honor, if we could, I would like to ask for a continuance of the arraignment," Alan said, standing between two members of his legal team. "We've coordinated with counsel from the DA's office, and January 7th, with the court's permission, will be a convenient date for us to come back for a potential arraignment." The judge acknowledged his statement, then directed her attention directly to the defendant.

"Mr. Reiner, you have a constitutional and statutory right to a speedy arraignment," she explained. "Your counsel is requesting that your arraignment be continued to January 7, 2026. Do you waive your right to a speedy arraignment so that your arraignment can be heard on January 7, 2026?"

There was a pause. Then came Nick's answer. His voice, low and measured, carried across the courtroom, "Yes, your honor," he was heard responding.

Theresa confirmed the waiver, stating on record that the court found Nick's answer to be "a knowing and intelligent waiver of his right to a speedy arraignment," and that his counsel had joined in the waiver.

The courtroom, under strict restrictions prohibiting photographs, offered only limited glimpses into the proceedings.

Defense Attorney Warns of Media Frenzy

After the hearing, Alan Jackson stepped outside to address the media and offered a formal statement on behalf of the defense. "This is a devastating tragedy that has befallen the Reiner family," he began. "We all recognize that. Our hearts go out to the entire Reiner family."

His tone was composed but firm as he cautioned against the media frenzy and speculation that had been swirling since Nick's arrest.

"There are very, very complex and serious issues that are associated with this case," he continued. "These need to be thoroughly, but very carefully, dealt with and examined and looked at and analyzed."

Alan also urged the public to allow the legal system to run its course without interference or assumption. "Not with a rush to judgment. Not with jumping to conclusions," he said. "But with restraint, and with dignity, and with the respect that this system and this process deserves, and that the family deserves."
