Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos Address the Topic of Divorce on Their Show Following Her Absence – Video

Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos have been married for decades, but their latest on-air conversation suddenly took a turn toward divorce — and even a "loveless marriage."

The eyebrow-raising moment happened during a recent episode of "Live with Kelly and Mark," not long after Ripa returned following an absence from the daytime show. In a clip shared on Instagram, the couple began discussing what would happen to their pets in the event of a divorce.

"How do we fight over pets in a divorce?" Ripa asked. Consuelos responded, "I mean, listen. Let's just put it this way, I would stay in a loveless marriage just to make sure I could be with Lena every day."

"That's how much I love Lena," he added. Ripa, however, was ready with a comeback of her own: "Is that all you're asking for, is [sic] a loveless marriage? Cause that can be arranged." And that is where the context changes everything.

"Kelly sends her love," Consuelos said while welcoming guest Co-Host Kevin Jonas. "Kelly had a little bit — well, it's not a little — she had a gum graft surgery."

A gum graft procedure, according to Cleveland Clinic, can be used to treat gum recession by placing healthy tissue over areas where the gums have become thin or receded. The procedure can protect exposed tooth roots, help with sensitivity, and prevent additional recession.

Consuelos explained that Ripa had actually been advised years earlier that she would eventually need the procedure. "Her dentist said five years ago, 'You can do it in about five years,'" he recalled. "And she joked, 'I didn't think I'd still be on the air in five years!'"

Although Consuelos said his wife was "doing well" and "doing great," her recovery came with one particularly difficult rule for a professional talk-show host: she was not supposed to talk. "Wow. That's got to be the hardest thing she's ever done," Jonas joked.

Consuelos laughed and called Ripa "such a great conversationalist," while explaining that he had been trying to make sure she followed her dentist's recovery instructions. Those included eating soft foods, avoiding straws and resisting the temptation to inspect the area where the surgery was performed.

That last instruction apparently proved especially challenging. Consuelos recalled Ripa asking him, "Can you look?" He said he answered, "I'm not pulling your lip down," before describing how she repositioned herself so he could take a look without disturbing the surgical area.

"So I'm down there like, 'It looks great!'" he shared. When asked whether Ripa had been in pain, Consuelos acknowledged that she had. "But she famously doesn't feel pain. When she goes into [sic] the dentist, she doesn't use the novocaine. But this one hurts, so I know it's bad," he added.

Jonas then compared Ripa's high pain tolerance to that of his own wife, Danielle. "I'll be like, 'Are you in pain?' She's like, 'I'm fine!' Come to find out her foot's, like, falling off," he joked.

"Well, they do have kids. They deliver kids," Consuelos responded. "We're not built for that." So after a recovery period that temporarily kept Ripa — rather unusually — from talking, she was back alongside Consuelos and apparently more than ready to resume their signature back-and-forth.
