18-Year-Old Nolan Wells Found off Mississippi Gulf Coast Island Despite One Detail His Friends Revealed About Him — Photos
"I'll assure you that the Jackson County Sheriff's Office, we're looking at this whole case just like we would any other case. And we're going to be as thorough as we can," Sheriff John Ledbetter said as questions remained over the death of the 18-year-old who disappeared during a July 4 trip to Horn Island.
A July 4 trip with friends ended in tragedy for 18-year-old Nolan Wells, whose disappearance from a Mississippi barrier island launched a major search across the Gulf Coast.
Nolan traveled to Horn Island with a group of friends on Saturday, July 4, for an Independence Day outing. According to a detailed timeline of the search and recovery, the group departed from a private dock in the Ocean Springs area.
A Holiday Trip Takes a Troubling Turn
The Jackson County Sheriff's Office said Nolan was last seen near the island at around 3 p.m. He did not return with the group on the same boat. "From what we understand, he chose to stay there," Jackson County Sheriff John Ledbetter said.
When Nolan failed to return home, his mother contacted the sheriff's office around midnight. By the following day, the search for the teenager had expanded across the waters and surrounding areas.

Coast Guard Sector Mobile received a request for assistance at 12:26 p.m. on Sunday, July 5. An urgent marine information broadcast was issued, and a helicopter was deployed to search near Horn Island.
Authorities described Nolan as an 18-year-old Black male, approximately 6'1" and weighing 180 pounds. He had last been seen wearing blue swim trunks, sunglasses, and no shirt.
A command post was later established at the Lake Mars Boat Launch. The search grew to include multiple agencies, including the U.S. Coast Guard, the U.S. National Park Service, the Mississippi Department of Marine Resources, the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks, and local emergency crews.
The Search Ends with a Devastating Discovery
The operation resumed early Monday morning. Aircraft from the United Cajun Navy took to the air shortly before 6 a.m., while search boats were deployed as well. Then, at around 8:45 a.m., authorities received word that a body had been found in the water just off the northwestern tip of Horn Island. A U.S. Park Service ranger had made the discovery.
Nolan's family was called to the Lake Mars Boat Launch and later went to the coroner's office in Pascagoula. Before official identification was complete, Jackson County Coroner Bruce Lynd said he "had no reason to believe it wasn't him."

Shortly before 1 p.m., Nolan's family publicly confirmed his death. The following day, Bruce formally confirmed through dental records that the body recovered was Nolan's.
An autopsy was performed by the state medical examiner on Tuesday, July 7. Officials said the results, including a toxicology report, could take "a couple weeks." Authorities have not released an official cause or manner of death. However, investigators told ABC News that they suspect Nolan drowned while stressing that the investigation remains ongoing.
One Detail His Friends Shared Raises More Questions
As investigators work to determine what happened, one detail about Nolan has drawn particular attention: He knew how to swim. According to a report on Nolan’s disappearance and accounts from his friends, he had taken swimming lessons with them at the YMCA in Ocean Springs.
The detail is particularly striking given the suspected cause of death, though being able to swim does not eliminate the risk of drowning.
The wider dangers surrounding drowning remain significant. A report on CDC findings about swimming ability and drowning deaths stated that 15 percent of U.S. adults do not know how to swim, while 55 percent have never taken a swimming lesson.
The report also said drowning deaths had increased, with more than 4,500 people dying from drowning each year between 2020 and 2022 — approximately 500 more deaths annually than in 2019.
Attention Turns to Nolan's Final Conversation
Another deeply personal part of Nolan's story has also emerged in the aftermath of his death. Friends have reportedly identified Katie McCormack as Nolan's girlfriend and said she was the last person to speak with him before his disappearance.

A detail shared during the search appears to support at least part of that account. United Cajun Navy Incident Commander Josh Gill posted an urgent video update to social media, revealing that Nolan "was last seen talking to a girl on that north end" before disappearing.

Authorities have not publicly identified the girl Josh referenced or announced any findings connecting Katie to Nolan's death. The investigation remains focused on reconstructing Nolan's movements and gathering original photos, videos, and eyewitness accounts from Horn Island on July 4.

Nolan Was a Young Athlete Remembered for More than Football
The 18-year-old was a standout football player at Ocean Springs High School before continuing his career at Southwest Mississippi Community College. According to a tribute featuring his coaches and teammates, Nolan was only days away from reporting back to school for practice when he disappeared.
During his junior and senior seasons at Ocean Springs, the two-time All-Region wide receiver caught 63 passes for 724 yards and 10 touchdowns. He also helped the Greyhounds win region titles in 2024 and 2025 and never lost a district game as a varsity player.
Yet those who knew him focused as much on his personality as on his achievements on the field. "Nolan was a remarkable and unique individual," Greyhounds football coach Jake Bramlett said. "He always had a unique way of expressing himself that put everyone around him in a better mood, no matter the situation."
"Our Ocean Springs football family and community are heartbroken. All I can ask is you pray for his family and brothers as they go through this tragedy and look to remember the light that Nolan brought to all of our lives," the coach continued.
His longtime friend and former teammate Sharroid Whitehead offered a similarly personal tribute. "I grew up with Nolan, and he's one of my best friends," Sharroid said. "He's the most respectful (person) I know, he loves to help and is always happy."
Former teammate Brody Saenz remembered Nolan as someone who welcomed younger players and continued offering advice even after leaving Ocean Springs.
"Nolan was one of the first people I ever met playing varsity football for Ocean Springs, and he welcomed me and so many more younger guys with open arms like a true leader," Brody said. "Outside of football, he always brought great vibes to any occasion and was the type of guy who could make friends with anyone."

His Family Wants a Thorough Investigation
As tributes continue, Nolan's family is also seeking answers. The family retained civil rights and personal injury attorney Ben Crump, whose legal team announced plans for an independent review of the circumstances surrounding Nolan’s death.
"Attorney Crump and the legal team will conduct an independent review of the circumstances of Nolan’s death and will press for the timely release of all records, witness accounts, and autopsy findings," a press release stated.
Sheriff John Ledbetter said investigators were continuing to interview Nolan's friends and examine the case thoroughly. He also said there was no indication at that point of drug or alcohol use, while noting that the toxicology report and continuing investigation could provide more information.
"That's why we're still asking for information, if anybody has anything, any knowledge," the sheriff said. As the search for answers continued, photos from Nolan's July 4 outing surfaced online, offering glimpses of his final hours while fueling intense public speculation about what happened before he disappeared.
Final Photos Fuel Suspicion
As the community began to mourn, the mystery took an unsettling turn when Nolan's final photos from the island surfaced on social media. The tragic images show the young player smiling and posing happily with his three friends as they basked inside a boat earlier that day.

The sight of the cheerful group instantly triggered a wave of public suspicion and online outrage. Many onlookers found it impossible to understand how his companions could return to the mainland without him.

The sheriff's department announcement quickly turned into a battleground of accusatory comments. One viral comment asked, "How many of the friends have lawyers this morning?"
Another user shared their growing suspicion about the group's story, writing, "I dont even wanna say this to be negative, but i have a weird feeling the friends know exactly where he is, and it isnt where theyre looking" [sic].

The intense online speculation only grew as internet sleuths analyzed the case. Another commenter claimed, "I'm a private investigator and something smells very 'fishy' about this. Someone KNOWS something!!!!" [sic].
Many found the timeline of his abandonment to be the most troubling detail. Another reader questioned, "Pray for the best but prepare for the worst.... Why did his friends leave him?" [sic].

However, some people rushed to defend the teenagers and pleaded for calm. A defensive comment stated, "They didn't leave him. They are all working together, unlike this page that should be praying and not acting like detectives."
Amid the fierce arguments, the overwhelming feeling remained one of absolute heartbreak for a life cut short. As another user simply put it, "This is so sad!!!"

Grieving Family Speaks Out
Following the official confirmation of the recovery, Nolan's mother, Christine Wonsley, broke her silence to address the tragedy. She thanked the community, local law enforcement, and volunteers for their tireless efforts during the agonizing search.
In her emotional public Facebook post, she shared the immense grief gripping her family. She wrote, "His father, Elmore Wonsley, our family, friends, and I are absolutely devastated."

To help support Nolan Wells' family with unexpected funeral and memorial costs, loved ones established an official GoFundMe page. The campaign has already raised $65,163 of its $120,000 goal, which represents about 55% of the total.
