From Pageant Spotlight to Reality TV Fame

In 2012, Alana Thompson was a six-year-old competing on the pageant circuit when a single appearance made her a household name.

By 2013, she was headlining her own TLC reality series, "Here Comes Honey Boo Boo," alongside her mother, June "Mama June" Shannon, and her sisters.

The show's mix of Southern culture and unfiltered family chaos made Alana one of the most recognized child stars of her generation. Cameras followed her through 2015, when she attended a WE tv series premiere, still very much in the public eye as a preteen.

By 2017, Alana was making media rounds on her own, stopping by Extra in Times Square and visiting SiriusXM studios for interviews.

In March 2023, when Alana was 17, she was a passenger in a car during a police chase in Monroe County, Georgia, after her then-boyfriend, Dralin Carswell, was pulled over and fled from officers.

Carswell was later arrested for DUI, fleeing police, and outstanding warrants; Alana was not taken into custody and was picked up by her sister, Lauryn "Pumpkin" Efird.

A Devastating Loss, and a Promise

In December 2023, Alana's sister Anna "Chickadee" Cardwell died of cancer at age 29. Before her death, Anna made Alana promise she would follow through on a specific goal.

"I consistently remind myself when Anna told me, she was like, 'If I pass and you're not in nursing school, I will haunt you,'" Alana shared in an interview months after Anna's passing.

That promise became a turning point. Alana enrolled in nursing school, setting her sights on a career in pediatric care — a goal she has pursued steadily ever since.

Rebuilding, Reconciling, and Moving to Denver

By 2025, Alana's life looked dramatically different. She relocated roughly 1,600 miles from home to attend Regis University in Denver, where she began working toward becoming a pediatric intensive care unit nurse.

She also opened up about the relationship that helped her through her hardest years. In an Instagram post shared that same month, Alana described meeting her boyfriend, Jalen, during a period when her mother's addiction was at its worst, and she was living with her sister Pumpkin's family.

Jalen, she said, became her main support system — one who never spoke badly about her mother in front of her, despite everything he had witnessed, and who eventually left his life in Georgia to move to Colorado to be with her.

Around this same time, Alana and Mama June — sober for more than five years — began mending their relationship. The two now film together for WE tv's "Mama June: Family Crisis," which returned for its seventh season in May 2025.

Alana has said forgiving her mother "was hard," but that she stopped holding expectations and instead focused on the fact that her mother is, at the end of the day, still her mom.

A Scare on the Road

The road to Denver wasn't without setbacks. In late September 2025, Alana was involved in a serious car accident near her home when another driver, reportedly traveling 40 miles per hour, T-boned her vehicle on the driver's side.

She was taken to the hospital with back pain and headaches but was ultimately released to recover at home, with her family traveling to Denver to help her get a rental car and get settled again.

By March 2026, Alana was back to a steady rhythm, making a public appearance at SiriusXM studios that showed just how far removed she now was from the chaos of years past.

Turning 21 With a Degree in Sight

In April 2026, Mama June confirmed to People that Alana was on track to graduate college the following year, working toward her goal of becoming a PICU nurse while already employed at a hospital in Denver.

On August 28, 2026, Alana turned 21 — no longer the six-year-old the world once knew only by a catchphrase, but a young woman months away from a milestone none of her family members have reached.

"When I graduate, I'll be the only one in my family with a degree," Alana has said. "I love that I've persevered past who people thought I was."
