Malia Obama, 28, Recently Spotted Out in Public, Sparking Online Buzz over How Much She Resembles Her Mother Michelle Obama – Photos
While the young lady has worked hard to let her creative ambitions speak for themselves, a seemingly ordinary lunch outing suddenly reminded fans of a family connection they could not ignore.
Malia Obama has spent much of her adult life quietly building a world beyond her famous family. Yet after one of her latest public outings, something about her appearance had social media users doing a double take, and the reactions became remarkably consistent.
The 28-year-old was recently photographed during a casual day in Los Angeles, but it was not simply the outing itself that caught people's attention.
On September 8, 2026, photos of Malia surfaced online after she was spotted grabbing lunch with Journalist Joshuah Bearman at Little Dom's in Los Feliz on Labor Day. The outing was also shared on X, putting another relatively low-key appearance by the former first daughter in front of a much wider online audience.
Malia kept the occasion casual, stepping out in a white tank top with loose-fitting dark jeans, flat sandals, sunglasses and a large black shoulder bag. Her long hair was worn partly up, with much of it falling over her shoulders.
She and Joshua were photographed seated outside during lunch and later leaving the restaurant together. But as the images made their way around social media, the conversation increasingly turned toward Malia herself, and one name kept appearing: Michelle Obama.

One commenter reacting to Malia's latest outing admitted, "NGL, I thought that the 1st pic was Michelle". The remark captured just how immediate the mother-daughter comparison became once the new photos circulated. | Source: Instagram/backgrid_usa
Viewers Couldn't Stop Seeing Michelle
Some commenters believed Malia's latest appearance highlighted just how much she resembles her mother, with several zeroing in on everything from her stature to her facial features. One Instagram user wrote, "She she [sic] is so tall and elegant like Michelle 😍." Another commented, "Her momma jaw line is a strong gene bless her heart [sic]."
For at least one viewer, the resemblance was striking enough to cause an initial mix-up: "NGL, I thought that the 1st pic was Michelle." Someone else similarly declared, "That one looks just like her momma."
Meanwhile, other commenters focused on Malia's appearance, with one writing, "She has a cute shape," while another swooned, "she [sic] looks so pretty." The positive reactions continued elsewhere. In comments on a Facebook post, one person wrote, "Very special," while another simply praised, "She's beautiful!"

Michelle Obama has long inspired comparisons with her eldest daughter, especially after an old photo of the former first lady resurfaced in 2022. Fans at the time were struck by how strongly Malia appeared to have inherited some of her mother's features. | Source: Getty Images
The renewed comparisons may have been sparked by these latest photographs, but the idea that Malia strongly favors Michelle is hardly new.
The Mother-Daughter Resemblance Has Turned Heads Before
Back in September 2022, Hello! reported that a throwback photograph of Michelle had left fans startled by how much she looked like her eldest daughter.
Michelle had shared a black-and-white photo of herself from 1991, and according to the outlet, her side profile bore a particularly noticeable resemblance to Malia's.
Hello! pointed to Michelle's "elegant long neck and lean physique" as features Malia appears to have inherited. Malia was also around the same age at the time as Michelle had been when the older photograph was taken.
But while the physical similarities have inspired plenty of conversation, their professional paths have been quite different. At the time of the 2022 report, Malia had moved from New York to Los Angeles and was working as a screenwriter on Donald Glover's Amazon project with the then- working title "Hive."
Donald praised her abilities while speaking to Vanity Fair, saying, "Her writing style is great." He continued, "She's just like, an amazingly talented person. She's really focused, and she's working really hard."
The actor also predicted promising things ahead for her, adding, "I feel like she's just somebody who's gonna have really good things coming soon."

Her parents' pride in both of their daughters was also evident. That Father's Day, Barack Obama shared a family photo and wrote, "Happy Father's Day to all the dads and father-figures celebrating today! Of all that I've done in my life, I'm most proud of being Malia and Sasha's dad."
Yet as Malia's professional life has developed, she has seemingly been determined to make sure her work stands apart from the enormous public identities of both of her parents.
Malia Is Building a Name Separate from the Obama Legacy
By May 2026, Hello! reported that Malia was continuing to carve out her own path in filmmaking. After working as a writer on Donald's "Swarm," she made her directorial debut with the 2023 short film "The Heart." Professionally, she goes by Malia Ann.

Michelle and Barack, who married in 1992, are also parents to their younger daughter, Sasha Obama, 25. According to Michelle herself, Malia's desire for independence apparently extends even to whether her parents get invited into her professional world.

During an episode of Michelle and her brother Craig Robinson's “IMO” podcast, Filmmaker Steven Spielberg discussed Barack visiting the set of his recent project, "Disclosure Day." Steven remarked that it was "the first set Barack ever visited," before noting that Michelle already had a filmmaker in the family.
"Even though your daughter is a filmmaker, Malia. So I feel bad I scooped Malia," Steven said. Michelle's response was revealing: "She doesn't care. She will never invite us to anything that she does. You know, she doesn't want us around her stuff."

The conversation then shifted to Barack's relationship with Steven and his enthusiasm for the director's films.
Michelle joked, "My husband is a bully to you when it comes to your movies," adding, "I always reprimand him … because you haven't let him see [your latest film] and he's very mad about that."
Steven responded with his own playful story, saying Barack had threatened that if he was not among the first people to see the movie, "he was going to watch it only on an iPhone."
Michelle chimed in, "Which he knows would irritate you," before Steven added that Barack said he would not even watch it horizontally, but "he'd only watch it vertically."
Barack did eventually get something arguably even better: a visit to the set. "But he got to come on set for this one," Steven said, while Michelle recalled that her husband "had a ball" during the visit.

Steven described Barack's arrival as an unforgettable moment for the actors working there. "It was great. It was, of course, for my cast, it was a bit of a religious experience because in walks this iconic president who comes onto our set," he said.
Although Steven explained that Barack is simply a longtime friend to him and others who know him personally, he acknowledged that the younger cast members experienced his presence very differently.
"To me, he's a good friend, to all of us, we know each other so well. But on set, the kids didn't know Barack except from what he's done for the world and who he represents," the director explained.
According to him, even an ordinarily outgoing group suddenly became unusually quiet. "They were just absolutely — and I have a very extroverted cast — you could hear a pin drop when he walked in. They didn't know what to say," he recalled.
Steven added that he had deliberately kept the visit partly under wraps, saying, "I didn't tell all of them, I told some of them, but not all of them."

A Familiar Resemblance, but a Very Individual Path
It creates an interesting contrast around Malia. She has deliberately developed her own filmmaking career, uses Malia Ann professionally and, according to Michelle, does not even want her parents hovering around her projects.
Yet visually, the comparisons to her mother continue to follow her whenever a new set of photos reaches the public. And that is exactly what happened following her latest Los Feliz outing.
Some viewers saw Michelle's height and elegance. Others focused on Malia's face, with one commenter going so far as to admit they initially believed they were looking at the former first lady herself.
Whether readers see that same striking resemblance is something the latest photographs make especially fun to judge for themselves.
