Kate Gosselin has addressed questions about her son Collin amid his allegations of abuse. Her remarks come as others close to the family share their own accounts of his past.

The former reality TV star has faced questions about Collin's time in treatment. Her latest comments and a statement from his representative add new details to the public disagreement.

Collin has publicly accused his mother, Kate, of abuse, drawing attention to his time in residential treatment. The former "Jon & Kate Plus 8" star has also made claims about his behavior, prompting a response from someone who knew him personally.

Colleen Conrad Shares Her Experience Living With Collin

Colleen Conrad, who previously dated Collin's father, Jon Gosselin, discussed her experience in an Instagram post featuring a photograph of Collin with a dog.

A psychiatric nurse practitioner with more than 35 years of healthcare experience, Colleen said Kate's statements prompted her to speak publicly. She described how Collin behaved after moving in with her and Jon.

"When Collin came to live with us, I did not observe the symptoms or behaviors I would have expected based on some of the diagnoses he had received, nor did I observe the behaviors that have since been publicly described," Colleen wrote.

Colleen also discussed changes to Collin's medication during that period. "In consultation with his treating physician, we gradually discontinued his medications under medical supervision," she wrote.

She emphasized the importance of treating mental health concerns with compassion while respecting people's personal experiences.

"Mental health conditions are real, complex, and deserving of compassion and understanding. However, they should never be used to dismiss another person's lived experience or deflect legitimate questions about the past," Colleen wrote.

Kate Explains Why Some Visits With Collin Did Not Happen

Kate addressed her contact with Collin during residential treatment in the comments under a TikTok post.

"I visited EVERY single time the facility felt he was stable enough for a visit," she wrote in the comments. "Sometimes a visit was planned but the facility canceled it because he was too unstable and it would have to be rescheduled."

A TikTok user named Anna challenged that explanation. "I am a nurse at a similar facility, the nurses do not cancel a family visit due to 'behavior,' if behavior was present that is when they WANT the family to come," Anna wrote.

Kate didn't leave Anna's comment unanswered. Her response was direct.

"Were you a nurse at the facility where he was when he was there? No? Then you don't know," Kate replied.

Collin Gosselin's Representative Rejects Kate's Accusations

Collin's representative responded to Kate's public allegations in a statement shared by Entertainment Tonight on Instagram.

"It is disturbing that Kate continues make false accusations and publicly attack her own child despite multiple professional psychological evaluations contradicting her claims," the representative said in the statement.

The representative also addressed allegations involving weapons and animals, rejecting claims that Collin had harmed either family members or animals.

"Let us be absolutely clear: Collin has never used a weapon to harm a family member, nor has he ever harmed or killed an animal in his lifetime. These allegations are categorically false," the statement continued.

The representative also criticized Kate for making the allegations public, accusing her of trying to protect her reputation at her son's expense.

The statement ended with support for Collin's decision to share his experiences. "Collin has shown extraordinary courage in telling his story, and he will not be intimidated or silenced by these damaging accusations," the representative added.

What Collin Shared Ahead of His Memoir's Release

The public statements from Kate Gosselin, Colleen Conrad, and Collin's representative come shortly after the release of Collin's memoir, "In the Shadow of Eight," on October 13.

Ahead of the book's release, Collin spoke with ABC News' Juju Chang about his childhood on "Jon & Kate Plus 8" and what he alleges happened when the cameras were off.

"Simply put, my whole life that I lived was a lie," he said in the October 12 interview. "All the things you see on TV, lies."

Collin alleged that his mother isolated him from his father, physically abused him, and later placed him in residential treatment shortly before his 12th birthday. He also claimed that he received medication and had little contact with his family while at the facility.

Kate had previously defended that decision in a November 2016 ABC News interview. She said Collin needed treatment for educational and social challenges and that the decision followed medical advice.

At the time, Kate described sending him for treatment as the best thing she could do for him. She also dismissed reports that Collin had accused her of abuse, calling them "unfounded."

But Kate's past denial is now being met with another account, this time from someone who says she witnessed what happened inside the family's home.

She Once Watched Kate Gosselin's Family on TV and Dreamed of Having the Same Life

"I used to watch the show, like, 'My gosh, this is actually real. You can have infertility issues, and you can still have kids,'" Ashley, now 42, recalled in an exclusive interview with PEOPLE. At the time, she was also working as a nanny when she came across an online job posting that would bring her into the Gosselin family's world.

The advertisement did not identify Kate by name, but it mentioned the possibility of living on the estate, and Ashley could tell the employer was wealthy. She eventually met Kate at Starbucks, where the mother of eight arrived in a sports car.

"She didn't say who she was [in the post], just that the nanny could live on the estate, and you could tell she was very, very wealthy," Ashley recalled. Their schedules did not align because of Ashley's university classes, so she accepted a position as Kate's house cleaner and occasional fill-in nanny instead.

It was an opportunity that initially seemed to fit the life Ashley hoped to build for herself, but what she says she encountered inside the house would eventually change how she viewed the family she had admired on television.

The Family Home Looked Like a Dream — But Ashley Says It Felt Different Behind the Scenes

When Ashley first arrived at the Gosselin residence in Wernersville, Pennsylvania, she remembered seeing large, beautiful family photographs displayed on the walls. The house was only about 20 minutes from Alvernia University, where she was studying, and its appearance initially reinforced the picture of family life she had formed while watching the show.

"I used to think, like, 'Oh, I can't wait to have this someday,'" she said. Ashley eventually became a mother to twins herself, but her experience working for Kate left her with a very different idea of what she wanted her own home to feel like.

"Now, I have my nice little house, and I have my canvas pictures of my family up on my walls. But I promised my house would never look unlived-in like Kate's."

The sprawling Pennsylvania property had plenty of space, including an expansive wooden deck, traditional living areas, a large kitchen, and multiple bathrooms. Its interior featured cream-colored cabinetry, patterned furnishings, dark wood accents, and decorative architectural details.

Some viewers have also questioned whether the house's traditional design looks outdated by modern standards, with some describing it as "super outdated." A YouTube video offering a look at the property gives viewers another chance to examine its style and layout.

But for Ashley, the most memorable part of her time there was not the home's size or decor. She claims that the carefully maintained surroundings reflected a household where even ordinary signs of family life were unwelcome.

Ashley Claims Strict Rules Kept the House Looking Almost Untouched

While the house may have appeared comfortable and spacious, Ashley alleged that the rules governing everyday life inside it were unusually strict. She told PEOPLE that Kate maintained a "house manual" for staff, outlining expectations that included not taking pictures of the children and keeping the family dog out of the house except for the basement.

"The house was to look unlived-in at all times," Ashley said. The cleaning requirements reportedly extended well beyond ordinary household chores, with weekly and biweekly tasks that Ashley described as exceptionally meticulous. "She would have weekly chores, biweekly chores, and they would include having a toothpick and going around the edges of the fridge."

According to Ashley, the emphasis on keeping the house spotless also affected the children, who she said were not allowed to leave toys or other belongings lying around. "She wouldn't let the kids do anything," she said. "There was never toys out. There was never things out. They couldn't live."

She also claimed the children were allowed only "either one or two school outfits per week because it would cause too much laundry." For a household with eight children, that restriction would have made an already demanding daily routine even more complicated, particularly with school clothes, activities, and other family needs to manage.

Ashley also described Kate's interactions with her children as "robotic," alleging that affection was not distributed equally among them. "It was not loving," she said. "She very much made it known who was a favorite, who wasn't, who's annoying. Someone would come and pick the dog up for grooming, but she treated her kids basically worse than animals."

These are Ashley's recollections of her time working for the family, rather than scenes that viewers necessarily saw during the show's run. Her account paints a sharp contrast between the polished home viewers watched on television and the atmosphere she says she experienced as an employee.

Another Set of Photos Show a Different Side of Family Life Inside the House

Although Ashley described a home where everything was expected to remain in its place, footage from Kate Plus 8 also captured the everyday activity that comes with raising eight children.

The landscaped front yard gives the home a welcoming appearance, while the interior photographs offer a glimpse of the traditional decor that defined many of its rooms.

Together, the images show the setting in which the family spent years appearing on television. However, Ashley says the atmosphere behind the scenes was what ultimately convinced her that she could not continue working there.

The Red Spoon in a Drawer Is the Detail Ashley Says She Never Forgot

Ashley says one moment in particular made her question what she believed was happening inside the Gosselin home. While opening a drawer containing school supplies, she came across a large, red plastic spoon. Because she considered the house so meticulously organized, she was surprised to find the object among the supplies.

When she asked the children why it was there, she says one of them immediately explained. "And instantly, I'm pretty sure it was Alexis who said, 'Oh, that's the spoon mommy uses when she gets mad.'"

The response stayed with Ashley, who says the spoon became a symbol of the concerns she had been developing during her time in the home. She claims she had already witnessed interactions between Kate and Collin that made her uncomfortable, but the children's response to the spoon pushed her closer to the decision to leave.

"I was like, 'Oh, okay. I can't work here anymore. This really is as bad as I think it is,'" she recalled. "That red spoon has haunted me for a long time."

Ashley says she ultimately worked for the family for only six months. The spoon incident is part of Ashley's account of what she says she witnessed; it is not, by itself, independent proof of abuse. Nevertheless, she says it became a turning point in her decision to report her concerns.

Ashley Says She Saw Kate Treat Collin Differently From His Siblings

The former housekeeper's allegations focus particularly on Collin, one of Kate and Jon Gosselin's sextuplets. Ashley says she observed what she considered a clear difference in how Kate treated him compared with the other children.

"She very much outwardly treated Collin different," Ashley told PEOPLE. "She 110 percent abused Collin. It's hard to almost put into words the specific hate that she had towards Collin. You could just feel it. I saw her grab Collin many, many times."

She further alleged that the behavior was not an isolated occurrence. "She did all the time," Ashley said of Kate's alleged treatment of Collin. "All the time. She'd rip him right out of his chair in the kitchen."

Ashley said she decided to speak publicly because she wanted Collin to know that someone who had worked inside the home supported his account of the family dynamics she says she witnessed. Her allegations remain allegations, and Kate has not publicly responded to Ashley's specific claims in the PEOPLE report.

Ashley Says She Called Child Services Before Leaving the Job

Ashley said her concerns eventually became too difficult to leave at work. She told PEOPLE that she contacted Children and Youth Services for Berks County before leaving the position, alleging that what she had witnessed affected her emotionally even after she returned home.

"I ended up getting sick because I started taking it home with me, because I didn't have my own kids and I didn't understand how somebody could be so nasty, downright evil and nasty to their own kids."

Ashley said she believes other people who worked around the family may have had similar concerns. "I know for a fact that I was not the only one who did that. I want to use this opportunity to not only back Collin that his mom was psychologically abusive to him, not to mention the physical."

Children and Youth Services for Berks County declined to comment to PEOPLE, citing "strict confidentiality laws."

Still, Ashley expressed hope that speaking out will encourage others who may have witnessed troubling behavior to share their experiences, even if many years have passed.

Ashley Hopes Others Will Speak Up, Even Years Later

Now a social worker, mental health advocate, and mother of twins, Ashley says she wants her decision to speak publicly to have a purpose beyond revisiting a painful period in the Gosselin family's history.

She hopes other former employees or people who witnessed events in the home will feel able to share their experiences. "I really hope it will spark people to speak up, even if it's been 15 years later," she said.

Ashley also expressed support for Collin as he continues to tell his story. "I am so incredibly proud of Collin and hope he feels validated."
