While certain properties served as family residences, others became difficult to part with. Photos of the houses have also prompted contrasting opinions from people online. Their first meeting took place at the Deauville Film Festival in 1998, and they became engaged in Aspen, Colorado, on New Year's Eve.

As their marriage and family evolved, so did their housing decisions, including when to move on from places that had once suited them. The couple's New York property, Longmeadow, occupies 12 acres in Irvington overlooking the Hudson River. Its extensive grounds give the historic residence the feel of a secluded estate. According to Realtor.com, Catherine acquired the house for $4. 5 million in 2019, after which the couple undertook major renovations.

One viewer commented, "So beautifully done!! The pool, the kitchen, the grounds...🤎 For once I'm not even mad at the paneling in the library!😂" A different viewer welcomed its lived-in appearance rather than the sparse modern style seen in some expensive houses. "Most rich do too much or have too little with that modem look bull, this is homie and perfect ❤️," the user added. The indoor swimming pool particularly impressed one commenter, who posted, "Obsessed with the indoor pool!! 😍" Others remained unconvinced by the amount of decoration.
Mallorca's coast

"It's so cluttered," another person observed. The spiral staircase inspired a particularly brief response. "The spiral staircase 😍," someone else wrote. Another commenter admitted, "I usually don't like this style but this is an undeniably beautiful house." Michael’s relationship with Mallorca goes back many years. His S’Estaca estate covers 250 acres in Spain’s Balearic Islands, bringing together an extraordinary coastal landscape and historic structures that were already more than a century old when he purchased them.

The estate’s story dates to the 1800s. In a video advertising the property, Michael explained that Austrian Archduke Ludwig Salvator of Habsburg bought the main residence during the 1860s. His alterations included smooth stucco surfaces and ornamental battlements at roof level. More than a hundred years later, Michael said he experienced a comparable fascination with the place."

When I first saw S'Estaca in 1990, I also fell under its spell and bought the property," he remembered. In the decades that followed, Michael explained that he "put my own mark on the place," through renovations and new decoration in the historic buildings. Several prominent visitors reportedly stayed at the estate, including Tom Cruise, Nicole Kidman, Michelle Pfeiffer, and Jack Nicholson. Despite its appeal, Michael and Catherine tried for years to sell S’Estaca. In promotional remarks from 2019, he indicated that changes in his circumstances had led him to consider passing on a place he had once described as his "spiritual home."

"My life has taken a new course," Michael said, "and now it's time for me to let someone else enjoy the privilege and adventure of owning S'Estaca." His outlook later shifted. In 2021, he spoke of S’Estaca as a property he hoped his family would retain, rather than sell. During a conversation with Ultima Hora, he addressed the previous arrangement that required him and Diandra to take turns using the estate.

"Yes, it was very awkward sharing the house in s'Estaca with my ex-wife, Diandra. Six months for each of us wasn't pleasant for anyone," he said. After the shared-use arrangement came to an end, Michael said his position on selling the house was no longer in doubt. "Now that everything is settled and the house is one hundred percent ours, Catherine's and mine, I can say that I never wanted to leave," he continued. He also envisioned future generations of his family enjoying the property.

"My children will continue to come, and my grandchildren and their children. I'm sure that for generations to come, this island will be theirs," he said. "This house belongs to my family and will continue to do so." The estate’s size, heritage, isolated location, and seaside views appealed to some online viewers more than others.

On YouTube, one commenter praised the landscape, describing it as a "Gorgeous magical property with vineyards." Another viewer appreciated the scenery but wondered whether such a remote location would be suitable for everyday living: "This stunning property is way too isolated to live in permanently. The beauty and joy of life is being surrounded by people, neighbours, family, friends, - I guess it's good to spend Christmas in with the family.! Then back to a vibrant city like New York or London, or Toluca Lake in Los Angeles where I currently live. There's nothing like hearing the sounds of "life" . . . Your neighbours walking their dogs. Greeting people in the streets. Coffee shops and hugs and laughter in Trader Joe's. There are so many magical places all over the world. But it is the P E O P L E that create that ambience. May we all never ..." Another commenter regretted the renovations carried out on the old estate.
Sitting room

"What a gorgeous, one-of-a-kind gem it must have been before it was 'modernized'. It breaks my heart," the person wrote. On Instagram, one person expressed doubts about whether the estate warranted its high asking price. "Needs a lot of work, pool should be on the water for 32 million. Unimpressed, great location though, Majorca is beautiful," the user wrote. A different viewer offered a one-word assessment: "opulence." The brief description reflected the impression of luxury created by the grounds, facilities, and waterfront location.

Before owning vast estates worth millions, Michael lived for several years in a comparatively simple house in Westport, Connecticut. The “Fatal Attraction” star offered a rare look at the property when he returned there in 2017. In a Facebook post documenting the visit, the actor said he lived in the house from 1956 to 1963 with his mother, Diana, his brother, film producer Joel Douglas, and his stepfather, William Darrid.
