Kelly Ripa once admitted that she kept cooking for five even after her three children had moved out. Now, after 30 years of marriage and years of adjusting to life as a couple again, she and Mark Consuelos are preparing to welcome someone new into their family — and their grown children already have plenty to say about it.

For the couple, the excitement comes after a period filled with big changes, emotional goodbyes, and one particularly painful loss. The decision happened so unexpectedly that even Kelly admitted she couldn't sleep, and the first pictures reveal the moment everything began to change.

The Family of Five Wasn't Always Going to Stay That Way

For much of their marriage, Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos had three children to raise, busy schedules to manage, and a household where someone always needed something. Their children, Michael, Lola, and Joaquin, grew up while their parents became two of television's most familiar faces.

Their eldest son, Michael, arrived in 1997, followed by daughter Lola in 2001 and youngest son Joaquin in 2003. For years, the couple's lives revolved around raising the three of them, but eventually the family reached the stage every parent knows is coming.

One by one, the children began leaving home to pursue their own lives. Michael and Lola were already finding their independence when Joaquin, the youngest, left for college in 2021, bringing an end to the years when all five lived under one roof.

Kelly later recalled taking Joaquin to college and realizing just how quickly his childhood had disappeared. "I did not realize that 18 years would go so fast," she admitted after describing their emotional goodbye.

The youngest Consuelos child had spent his whole life surrounded by siblings and parents who remained closely involved in one another's activities. Suddenly, he was beginning an independent life hundreds of miles from the family home.

In August 2021, Kelly shared a photograph of herself sitting beside Mark on their couch after Joaquin left for college. She joked, "So far we are crushing this empty nest thing," but the adjustment wasn't quite that simple.

One Small Habit Revealed Just How Much Had Changed

For years, Kelly had been the mother preparing meals around her family's routine. Even when the children were teenagers and becoming independent, there were still five people whose schedules mattered at home.

Then the youngest left, and Kelly found herself preparing dinner as though nothing had changed. Mark was the one who had to remind her that there were only two people to feed.

"There is an adjustment period," Kelly explained when discussing life without the children at home. She admitted that after Joaquin went away to college, "I kept cooking like there were five of us."

Her husband gently reminded her that they could now eat whenever they wanted. For a woman who had spent years arranging dinner around three children, it took time to get used to a schedule that belonged only to her and Mark.

Kelly was clear that she didn't dislike their new life. She and Mark had more freedom, could make spontaneous plans, and didn't need to organize every evening around someone else's timetable.

Still, their marriage had spent decades revolving around their children, and Kelly admitted they had one concern about suddenly having so much time together. After all those years, would they actually enjoy being alone as a couple?

"We actually, I'm not gonna lie, we were afraid. What happens if we despise each other?" Kelly admitted with her usual humor. Fortunately, the couple discovered that they still genuinely enjoyed each other's company.

They began traveling more, including trips to London to visit Lola. There were mornings together, long walks, and opportunities to enjoy activities they hadn't always had time for while raising their children.

And their relationship had already survived more than enough changes to prove that they were comfortable together. On May 1, 2026, the couple celebrated their 30th wedding anniversary, marking three decades since their spontaneous Las Vegas wedding.

During their anniversary celebration, Mark remembered how unexpectedly the marriage had happened. Kelly called marrying him the "Best thing I've ever done in my life," a declaration that was especially sweet after three decades together.

They were now spending almost every day together, both at home and at work. In April 2023, Mark joined Kelly as her permanent co-host, bringing their familiar married conversations to morning television.

Their three children were no longer living at home, but they certainly hadn't stopped having opinions about their parents' decisions. And soon, an unexpected family announcement would give Michael, Lola, and Joaquin something new to argue about.

A New Arrival Sparked an Unexpected Family Debate

Kelly and Mark were enjoying their new freedom as a couple, but their grown children were still very much involved in family conversations. Even with Michael, Lola, and Joaquin living independently, the parents weren't always the only ones with an opinion.

In October 2026, an unexpected new arrival sparked a family disagreement, and all three children wanted a say in one particular decision. Kelly, however, wasn't willing to let them have the final word.

The disagreement concerned someone who was about to become part of their household, and the children were determined to influence what happened next. But Kelly had a simple reason for refusing to give them a vote: they no longer lived at home.

Even Kelly and Mark hadn't been entirely certain they were ready to make this commitment. They had considered expanding their household before, only to change their minds, and the earlier experience had left them cautious.

Then something happened on an ordinary Monday morning that neither spouse had planned. By the following day, they were talking about a new baby, and Kelly was already losing sleep over the preparations.

She Saw a Side of Mark She Hadn't Expected

On Monday, October 12, 2026, Kelly and Mark arrived for another episode of their morning talk show. Their broadcast included guests Tom Ellis and Marilu Henner, along with a special segment that would unexpectedly change the couple's plans.

That morning, Mark walked into Kelly's dressing room carrying someone in his arms. Kelly immediately noticed a softer, gentler side of her husband, and she couldn't resist telling viewers what she had witnessed.

"I saw a different you. I saw a kinder, gentler you," she told Mark as they discussed the unexpected encounter. Her husband appeared completely comfortable, and his enthusiasm was difficult to miss.

The encounter had happened so naturally that Mark was already suggesting a new name, even though the couple hadn't made a final decision. Kelly realized her husband was getting attached much faster than either of them had expected.

"We have a new baby!" Kelly exclaimed, clearly delighted by the development. Mark then explained what had happened, while Kelly admitted that she had already started preparing for the arrival.

They were now officially expanding their family, but the first pictures would reveal that the newcomer had captured Mark's heart before the decision was even made. And the story of how it happened went back to someone Kelly had loved for nearly 18 years.

Who Is the Mysterious New Family Member?

On October 13, Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos announced that they had adopted a tiny rescue dog, introduced to viewers as Javi, originally named Lucas. They had met him just one day earlier during their show's "Adopt a Dog Week."

The little dog came from New Jersey-based rescue organization Pet ResQ Inc., and the meeting quickly became much more than an ordinary television appearance. Within hours, Mark and Kelly were considering bringing him into their home.

The video shows why Mark became attached so quickly. The little dog settled comfortably in his arms during the show's conversation and eventually fell asleep while Mark held him.

It was almost as though the dog had made his own choice. Mark described him as calm and good-natured, while Kelly watched her husband become increasingly affectionate toward the tiny newcomer.

The couple planned to welcome Javi into their New York townhouse, where another family member was already waiting. Lena, their Maltese and Shih Tzu mix, had been with them since 2021, and Kelly wanted to make sure the two dogs could get along.

Their first meeting went well enough to reassure the couple. Lena was initially cautious, but the dogs eventually began playing together, and Mark was convinced they would become "Great buddies."

Javi wasn't the first dog the couple had welcomed after an appearance on their morning show. Lena had also come into their lives that way, while their beloved Shih Tzu, Chewie, had been part of the family for nearly 18 years.

The following September, Kelly and Mark considered adopting a little poodle named Copper, but Lena became frightened during their introduction. The couple decided against it, with Kelly admitting, "We're still not over the loss of our dog. I don't think we ever will be, frankly."

So when Javi appeared months later, Kelly hadn't been searching for a dog who resembled Chewie. Yet seeing the little rescue in Mark's arms brought back a familiar memory, and she recalled thinking, "I bet Chewie sent Javi here for us."

Mark had already made his affection for Lena clear months earlier. In August 2026, he joked, "I would stay in a loveless marriage just to make sure I could be with Lena every day."

Now another little dog had won him over almost immediately. But while Mark and Kelly were delighted with their decision, their three grown children had something to say about what the newcomer should be called.

Unexpected Family Problem

The adoption started a playful disagreement with the couple's three grown children, who wanted a say in the new dog's name. Mark favored Javi, short for Javier, while the rescue organization had originally named him Lucas, and the family suggested other possibilities, including Gizmo.

Kelly wasn't about to let her children make the decision. "Our children are adults. They do not live with us," she declared, recalling how she told them, "Stay out of it, you don't live here!"

The couple eventually narrowed the choices to Javi and Lucas. During their October 14 broadcast, the studio audience overwhelmingly favored Javi, while an Instagram poll also gave the name 77 percent of the vote at the time.

Still, Kelly confirmed that the final name hadn't been settled. And while the family continued debating what to call their newest member, Kelly and Mark were already making preparations for his arrival.

There's Still One Thing Standing Between Them and Their New Beginning

As of October 14, Javi had not yet moved into Kelly and Mark's New York townhouse. The newly adopted dog was still awaiting medical tests, and the couple planned to take things slowly when introducing him to life with Lena.

Kelly had already begun preparing, though. "We are like expectant parents," she said after the adoption, admitting that she had started nesting and couldn't sleep because she was so excited.

There was something familiar about Kelly's excitement. Years after preparing a home for three babies, dealing with school routines, and watching her children leave, she was once again looking forward to someone new becoming part of their everyday lives.

Her children had grown up, and no new arrival could bring back those earlier years. But Kelly and Mark had found room in the home they loved for another companion, one whose first meeting with Mark had already become part of the family's story.

And perhaps the sweetest part came from the way Kelly remembered Chewie. The dog who had watched Michael, Lola, and Joaquin grow up was gone, but Kelly still carried those memories with her.

Now Javi was preparing to join a household that had already experienced decades of family life and one painful farewell. Chewie's place in their hearts remains her own, while the little newcomer is already making himself comfortable with the people who will become his family.
