Kelly Ripa Reveals the Surprising Habit That Forced Her Off the Air for 10 Days — and Why She Waited 5 Years to Fix It

The "Live With Kelly and Mark" host said her doctor eventually warned that she could no longer wait, but the reason she needed surgery was more unexpected.

Kelly Ripa's absence from "Live With Kelly and Mark" followed an oral procedure she had put off for years—but it was the everyday habit behind the problem that made the story unexpected.

On an August 12, 2026 episode of the "Let's Talk Off Camera" podcast recorded before the procedure, Ripa spoke with actress Michelle Buteau, who later became one of the guest co-hosts filling in alongside Ripa's husband, Mark Consuelos.

Ripa said the show had prepared for her absence by taping episodes in advance.

"I guess you were on the talk show as a guest, what, last week? And Mark was like, 'Hey, would you want to host sometime?'" Ripa told Buteau while discussing the show's plans.

She also described what the gum graft would involve. Ripa said she was "not allowed to talk for 10 days" because "they take the skin off of the roof of your mouth and they put it [over your gums]."

In the podcast, Buteau praised Ripa for taking time off to care for her health, but Ripa quickly added that the procedure was long overdue.

"Before you praise me, I was supposed to do it five years ago," she said. Ripa recalled that her doctor eventually told her, "Now, you don't have the luxury of time!"

Ripa Revealed What Led to the Procedure

The reason Ripa needed surgery was not a lack of dental care. According to the host, the problem stemmed from being overly aggressive with her oral hygiene.

"I'm an over-brusher. I brush my teeth too much. It's a good bad habit," Ripa said. She then joked about what the surgery was meant to accomplish: "So, they've got to re-gum my gums!"

Ripa kept joking about the ordeal, saying that "death creeps in through the gums." Facing 10 days without speaking, she also asked Buteau, "Do I ever need to be heard again? I don't think so!"

Although a representative initially confirmed that she was expected to be absent for the following week, Entertainment Weekly later reported that she would miss at least three weeks of tapings.

Several familiar faces are scheduled to help Consuelos keep the show moving during her recovery. Mila Kunis, Pamela Adlon, and Scott Foley were named among the stars filling in during the first week.

Jenna Dewan and Carrie Coon took turns as guest co-hosts the following week. After that, "Live" began its annual summer break, with reruns airing instead of new live episodes.

The Rules Ripa Is Supposed to Follow

A gum graft is performed to address gums that have become thin or receded, leaving parts of a tooth's root exposed.

According to the Cleveland Clinic, healthy tissue is transferred to the affected area. The procedure may reduce sensitivity, protect against further recession, and improve oral health.

Following surgery, patients may be instructed to eat soft foods, avoid drinking through straws, and resist looking at or touching the surgical site. Ripa was also reportedly told not to talk while the area healed.

During Monday's show, Consuelos said he had been "trying to keep her to follow the rules" and "follow the directions" provided by her dentist. That responsibility apparently required some persistence. After all, asking Ripa not to speak was always going to be a particularly ambitious recovery plan.

Fill-in Co-Host Kevin Jonas jokingly acknowledged the difficulty of that rule. "That's got to be the hardest thing she's ever done," Jonas remarked.

Luckily, Ripa was not left without a little comfort during the painful recovery process. Consuelos revealed that friends had arranged for a dessert she could safely enjoy while sticking to her soft-food diet.

"We had ice cream delivered last night from our good friends out in Palm Springs," he shared. "Really good ice cream." The delivery also followed the dentist's instructions, unlike another activity she was apparently having trouble avoiding.

During the Tuesday, July 28, episode of "Live with Kelly and Mark," Jonas asked Consuelos how Ripa was feeling after the procedure. Consuelos said she was "feeling better" and had even begun "saying certain things."

Jonas immediately questioned whether she was allowed to speak yet. "I don't think so," Consuelos admitted.

How Ripa Was Managing to Speak

Consuelos then explained that his wife was talking "without moving her bottom lip." The unusual technique suggested that Ripa was attempting to obey at least the spirit of her dentist's orders, even if she could not remain completely quiet.

It is unclear exactly what she was saying, but the image of the famously animated host carefully speaking with a motionless lower lip gave viewers an amusing update amid an otherwise uncomfortable recovery.

Consuelos also said Ripa had received plenty of encouragement after he discussed her surgery on television. "And she got a lot of love, messages, people were checking in, cause we announced it on the show that she had surgery," he shared.

The Detail That Showed Mark Ripa's Pain Was Serious

Consuelos said Ripa's doctor had recommended the gum graft years earlier. However, the recovery appeared to be especially difficult, even for someone he described as having an unusually high tolerance for discomfort.

According to Consuelos, "She famously doesn't feel pain," he explained. "When she goes into the dentist, she doesn't use the novocaine." That made her response to the gum graft procedure especially telling. "But this one hurts, so I know it's bad," Consuelos revealed.

Ripa's temporary silence may be frustrating for the quick-witted host, but her careful lip technique, soft-food treats, and messages from concerned viewers appear to be helping her through the healing process.

The Couple Has Compared Pain On-Air Before

This is not the first time Ripa and Consuelos have turned a medical experience into an amusing on-air conversation. During a 2024 episode of "Live," Consuelos suggested that his foot surgery may have been more painful than Ripa's experience giving birth.

"You did have three C-sections, and that's very, very, very painful," he quipped. "I do acknowledge that." He then offered a comparison that drew laughter from the studio audience. "But have you had foot surgery?" he asked. "Nerve endings at the tip of your toe. Very, very, very painful."

Consuelos added that his orthopedic surgeon had supposedly told him, "You know this is more painful than childbirth." Ripa responded with the kind of dry remark viewers have come to expect from her.

"I'm sure your masculine orthopedic surgeon—how often did you have to nurse your toe after your surgery?" she deadpanned.
