Their family knew them as experienced outdoor enthusiasts who shared an unbreakable bond. But when a familiar route became the center of an increasingly urgent investigation, authorities uncovered a chilling clue that would change everything.

What began as an ordinary weekend outing for a mother and her daughter turned into a family's worst nightmare when neither returned home. As the hours stretched into days, a troubling discovery along a familiar trail suggested something far more devastating had happened.

For the two women, spending time outdoors together was nothing unusual. They shared a love of nature, enjoyed many of the same activities, and had the kind of close relationship that made them nearly inseparable. But this time, a seemingly simple walk would leave their loved ones desperately searching for answers.

A Missed Family Gathering Raises the Alarm

The first indication that something was wrong came after the older woman failed to attend a planned online family gathering on Saturday night, October 31, 2026. She had been in contact with relatives earlier that day, so her sudden silence was concerning. As attempts to reach the pair went unanswered, their family began to fear something was seriously wrong.

Speaking to CBC about the ordeal, the woman's brother, Josh Balcarras, described the agonizing uncertainty that followed. "It's surreal. It doesn't seem real. It feels like a dream," he said. Josh explained how an initially worrying absence gradually became something much more frightening.

"The way it starts is a few hours of not hearing from them. That turns into a day, and then a night … then a second night comes and it becomes a real thing." By Sunday, November 1, the family's concern had grown serious enough that authorities were contacted.

A relative requested a police wellness check, and officers subsequently discovered the women's vehicle parked at a trailhead. It appeared the mother and daughter had gone for a walk on Saturday afternoon. However, their failure to return remained a mystery.

What made the situation particularly unsettling was that the trail was not some distant wilderness destination they had never visited before. According to their relatives, it was a familiar location, just a five-minute drive from their home. The woman's other brother, Matt Balcarras, emphasized that the trail was "very close to their house." "It's very close to town and it's not remote," he explained.

Josh echoed that sentiment, describing the outing as "Just a casual walk." Yet despite the trail's proximity to home, the two women were nowhere to be found.

The Women Behind the Growing Search

As concern spread, the missing pair were identified as Jennifer "Jenny" Balcarras, 48, and her daughter, Selah Reed, 20, who lived in the Canadian community of Bella Coola, British Columbia.

The mother and daughter were more than occasional walking companions, as their relatives described an extraordinarily close relationship built around shared interests, mutual affection, and a love of the outdoors. "They were two peas in a pod. When Jenny hiked, Selah was right there beside her," Josh recalled.

Their family also stressed that both women were experienced in coastal environments, having spent considerable time living in remote communities along British Columbia's central coast and in Alaska. "They were not naive city folks. They were strong women living the life," Matt said. That familiarity with the outdoors made the disappearance especially difficult to understand.

Jenny was a mother of four and a grandmother who had recently embarked on a promising new chapter in her life. After previously working as a school counselor at Bella Bella Community School, she relocated to Bella Coola during the summer of 2026.

She had moved to the community to pursue a new professional opportunity, working with students as a counselor and art therapist. Her youngest child, Selah, was beginning to build her own future. She worked as an educational assistant while pursuing part-time studies through Athabasca University's online learning program.

At just 20 years old, Selah had much of her adult life still ahead of her. As relatives waited for answers, search crews continued working in the area where the women's vehicle had been located. But what investigators would eventually discover was heartbreaking.

A Search Takes a Devastating Turn

According to a November 3 report by The Vancouver Sun, officers from the Bella Coola RCMP and rescue personnel launched a search after family members reported the pair missing. On Monday afternoon, November 2, searchers located the body of one of the missing women in the area of Snooka West Trail. The person found was Jenny Balcarras.

However, it was what investigators noticed at the location that introduced another deeply disturbing possibility: "Evidence at the site suggested an animal was involved and conservation officers were called in." Authorities subsequently began investigating what they suspected was a fatal grizzly bear attack.

With Jenny's body recovered, efforts continued to locate her daughter, who remained missing. On Tuesday afternoon, November 3, conservation officers and RCMP personnel discovered the second woman's body…it was Selah.

The mother and daughter had both been found dead, bringing the family's desperate search to a devastating end. Authorities suspected a grizzly bear was responsible for their deaths, although the investigation into the full circumstances remained ongoing. The discovery was especially shocking given that the women had apparently set out for a familiar walk only minutes from home.

A Loving Mother, Artist, and Counselor Remembered

As the family struggled with the loss, Jenny's brothers shared memories of the woman whose presence had meant so much to them. "Jenny was a wonderful artist, and has come to Bella Coola to work as an art therapist at the school," Matt said. "She's a tiny little woman but incredibly strong."

Jenny's interests extended far beyond her professional life. Her younger brothers remember her as someone who loved books, music, painting, and the outdoors. She enjoyed playing guitar and singing, while her artistic talents were evident in the homes of those closest to her.

"She painted murals in her own kids' home … my home," Matthew recalled. "She was very much a central person in our family." Her dedication to helping others had also made an impression on the school community she had only recently joined.

The Central Coast Teachers' Association paid tribute to Jenny, explaining that she had joined its school community as a counselor in August 2026. Despite her relatively short time there, she had devoted "countless hours to connecting with the students she served" and collaborating with teachers and other staff members to support students' well-being.

"Her time among us was far too brief, but her kindness, dedication, and care have left a lasting impression on our school community. She will be deeply missed," the association stated. For Jenny, the move to Bella Coola was supposed to represent a fresh beginning, one filled with professional growth and opportunities to make a difference.

Instead, her family has been left mourning a woman whose life had been deeply intertwined with those of her children, her grandchild, siblings, and the students she helped.

Selah's Gentle Spirit and the Bond She Shared with Her Mother

Selah is remembered just as lovingly by those who knew her. Family members described the young woman as "a gentle, sweet, quiet soul" who enjoyed ballet, art, hiking, and spending time in nature. Much like her mother, she had an artistic side and appreciated the outdoors. "She liked a lot of the same things Jenny liked. I think they got along really, really well," Josh explained.

Their closeness made the circumstances of their deaths all the more heartbreaking. For relatives, the loss means saying goodbye not only to two beloved family members but also to a mother and daughter whose shared adventures had been an important part of their lives.

And while loved ones were beginning to process the tragedy, investigators were still facing a potentially dangerous situation in the area where the women had disappeared.

Authorities Continue Searching for the Suspected Animal

Following the discovery of both bodies, the British Columbia Conservation Officer Service (BCCOS) intensified its investigation into the suspected grizzly bear attack. Insp. Jeff Tyre expressed sympathy for the grieving family while explaining that conservation officers remained actively involved in the case.

"Our thoughts are with the family of the victims during this tragic time. We are in contact with the family to offer any support we can as we continue to investigate this incident," he said. Officials warned residents and visitors to stay away from the Snooka West Trail area while officers conducted their work.

"We appreciate people's concerns and the desire to assist but it is critical the public stay out of the area — both due to the danger and to allow officers to do their work," Jeff emphasized. Conservation officers were searching for and attempting to trap bears in the area. As of the November 3 updates, no bears had been captured.

Authorities explained that any captured animal would be assessed to determine whether it was responsible for the suspected attack. If a bear is confirmed to have caused the deaths, officials said it will be euthanized in accordance with provincial human-wildlife conflict response guidelines to protect public safety.

The investigation involved the Conservation Officer Service, Bella Coola RCMP, Bella Coola Valley search and rescue crews, and Nuxalk Nation liaisons. However, the tragedy also stirred painful memories of another terrifying incident in the same community.

A Community Confronts Another Tragedy Nearly One Year Later

The suspected attack on Jenny and Selah occurred almost exactly one year after a grizzly bear injured several children and an adult during a school outing near Bella Coola. In November 2025, a group of approximately 20 students and teachers was on a field trip near the Bella Coola River when a grizzly unexpectedly emerged from the forest.

The Grade 4 and 5 students from Acwsalcta School had stopped for lunch along a trail when the animal charged. Three children and one adult suffered serious injuries. Another seven people received treatment at the scene but did not require hospitalization.

The incident shocked the community and highlighted the dangers that can arise when humans and large wildlife encounter one another. Following the latest tragedy, Nuxalk Nation elected Chief Samuel Schooner offered his condolences and acknowledged the emotional impact on residents still affected by the earlier attack.

"While the full circumstances are still unfolding, we understand first-hand the trauma this incident will inflict upon the victims' family members, the victims of last year's attack, and the community at large," he said. "Our thoughts are with the victim's family as they learn of this tragic event."

The two incidents occurred in a region known for its considerable grizzly bear population. But just how common are these encounters, and what makes the area particularly significant?

Why Grizzly Bear Encounters Are a Concern in British Columbia

In a November 2025 article examining grizzly activity across the province, The Vancouver Sun explored several high-profile bear sightings and attacks. British Columbia is home to approximately 15,000 of Canada's estimated 26,000 grizzly bears, according to the B.C. Wildlife Federation figures cited in the report.

While some populations are struggling, the grizzly population around Bella Coola is considered relatively healthy and dense. According to the Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society of British Columbia, the province has 55 distinct grizzly bear populations, approximately 60 percent of which are threatened. The situation varies considerably across the province.

Provincial grizzly bear population data identifies populations in southwestern British Columbia as threatened or extinct, contrasting with the healthier population around Bella Coola.

Wildlife safety experts have warned that human encounters with grizzly bears may be increasing due to population growth, habitat loss, and environmental changes. Experts also recommend carrying bear spray, which can be an important deterrent during a dangerous encounter. | Source: Getty Images

Wildlife Safety Expert Kim Titchener, founder of Bear Safety & More, previously discussed the circumstances surrounding bear attacks and the increasing concerns about human-wildlife encounters. It's "extremely unusual" for a grizzly bear to attack a large group, she explained.

"What we find with their attacks is that usually people are by themselves or with one other person," Kim said. She noted that attacks involving larger groups sometimes occur when one or two individuals become separated, startle a bear, and are chased back toward others.

However, the precise circumstances of the suspected attack on Jenny and Selah had not yet been established. Kim also discussed how growing human populations, habitat loss, and climate change may contribute to more encounters between bears and people. "There's [sic] more human beings on the landscape. Our population is increasing exponentially," she said.

Climate change, she added, is a "huge stressor," particularly because warmer winters can influence when bears enter their dens. "If there's [sic] still good food sources, these animals will not go to bed until they are well-fed and ready for it," she explained. Larger male bears, she noted, may delay hibernation longer than others.

Other Encounters Had Already Raised Concerns

The November 2025 report also detailed other troubling grizzly encounters from earlier that year. In May 2025, a grizzly bear swam from Powell River to Texada Island, where it roamed for more than a month before a local resident killed it. Then, in July, a couple riding electric bicycles near Creston encountered two grizzlies after rounding a corner bordered by thick brush.

One bear knocked the man from his bicycle and mauled him, while his wife used bear spray to drive both animals away. These incidents, although separate from the suspected Bella Coola attack, reflected the broader concerns surrounding grizzly activity in the province.

Kim offered several general precautions for people entering bear habitat. She recommended hiking in groups of at least four people, making noise to avoid surprising bears, keeping dogs leashed, and remaining especially alert during berry season or salmon spawning periods.

She also advised against leaving food accessible to bears. Above all, she emphasized the importance of carrying bear spray. "Bear spray, hands down, is the best deterrent on the planet for stopping a bear from attacking you," Kim said.

Such advice highlights the importance of wildlife awareness, although investigators have not established exactly what happened during Jenny and Selah's final outing. For their family, however, the immediate concern has shifted from searching for the missing women to confronting the emotional and financial consequences of losing them.

Family Fundraiser Seeks to Help Bring Jenny and Selah Home

In the wake of the tragedy, relatives established a GoFundMe campaign to help cover funeral expenses for Jenny and Selah. The fundraiser, organized by Mary Melissa Smith on behalf of Kara Balcarras, aims to raise C$70,000 (CAD) to assist with funeral arrangements and other expenses associated with bringing the two women home and laying them to rest.

Mary explained that she was organizing the fundraiser on behalf of the family and identified Jenny's brother Josh as her brother-in-law. The appeal described Jenny's recent relocation to Bella Coola and the financial uncertainty surrounding a new phase of her career.

She had not yet had the opportunity to build savings or set aside money for unexpected costs of this magnitude. The family is therefore faced with the devastating responsibility of arranging two funerals while still coming to terms with the loss.

"Tragically, no one could have anticipated that her family would be faced with such an unimaginable loss," the fundraiser stated. It also emphasized how young Selah had been and how much of her future remained unwritten. "Selah was just 20 years old, with her whole life ahead of her. She was only beginning her journey into adulthood, making this loss even more heartbreaking."

Jenny leaves behind three surviving young adult children — one son and two daughters — as well as a grandchild. The fundraising appeal explained that contributions would help relieve the family's financial burden, allowing them more space to mourn.

"Any contribution, no matter how big or small, will make a meaningful difference and help give this family the opportunity to grieve without the added stress of overwhelming financial responsibilities," the organizer wrote.

An update posted on November 3 confirmed that authorities had recovered the remains of the two individuals and were shifting their attention toward locating the bear or bears potentially involved. On November 4, the organizer expressed gratitude for the support the family had already received.

"Thank you so much to all the donors for your generosity! The family is extremely grateful for all the support from the community." Thus far, over C$48,400 (CAD) has been raised. For Jenny and Selah's loved ones, the events of that weekend have left an unimaginable void.

What should have been another shared afternoon outdoors became a tragedy that claimed two lives and deeply affected a community already familiar with the dangers of bear encounters.

Yet amid the grief and unanswered questions, their family continues to remember Jenny as a strong, creative, and deeply caring mother, and Selah as a gentle young woman who shared so many of her mother's passions.

Above all, they will be remembered for the extraordinary closeness that defined their relationship — two peas in a pod, whose love for one another was evident in the simple moments they spent together.

At this time, we wish to extend our most heartfelt condolences to the entire Balcarras family, all their loved ones, friends, and community as they mourn such a significant loss. RIP, Jenny and Selah.
