Trump's Wild Press Secretary Offer to Dana White Has the UFC World Buzzing — What Dana Said Next
The UFC boss received an invitation to take on Washington's most unforgiving microphone, but his response came with a destination and a picture that demanded a second look.
On November 7, 2026, Donald Trump publicly offered Dana White the White House press secretary job, weeks after his previous pick's humiliating departure. Then Dana answered a reporter and shared something on Instagram that made the prospect of him stepping behind that podium feel startlingly close, even as a very different answer circulated.

A Job Offer With an Entire Fight Team Attached
Leave it to Donald to turn a possible White House appointment into something resembling a fight-card announcement. In his Truth Social post, the president called Dana a "violent Fighter and Warrior" before pitching him for a job usually associated with briefing binders and relentless questions.
"Dana will be a Press Secretary like none other," Donald wrote. Then came the decidedly public plea: "Dana, please take the job!"
He also requested an extraordinary supporting cast: Islam Makhachev, Khabib Nurmagomedov, Justin Gaethje, Daniel Cormier, Amanda Nunes, and the fighter he named as "Kayla Harris." Those were the people he wanted Dana to bring as assistants, with Donald acknowledging that some were from outside the United States.
"We need these people to defend us [...]," he wrote.
That language gave the proposal the flavor of a showdown, just days after the mid-term elections. And Donald chose someone whose public career involved standing in front of cameras while powerful personalities clashed around him.
Still, running a combat-sports empire and answering for a president were two enormous commitments. Before Dana addressed the obvious question of how he could possibly manage both, there was the uncomfortable recent history of the position itself.
The Briefing Room Had Already Claimed a Casualty
The office had lost Karoline Leavitt on August 27, 2026, with a glowing public send-off. In its White House tribute, the administration celebrated its 36th press secretary as the youngest person to hold the position and praised her defense of the president's America First agenda.
Donald called Karoline "one of the best White House Press Secretaries in the History of the Office." Whatever pressures she faced behind that lectern, the official farewell presented her departure as a success.
Katie Zacharia received a very different ending. According to the Times, she was pushed out on October 16, 2026, after just five days, having started that Monday without even moving to Washington.
Donald had offered Katie the position the previous Friday. She was a relatively unfamiliar choice inside the building, an unpaid Fox News commentator who had attracted his attention and had the backing of influential West Wing aide Natalie Harp.
Her first briefing, on Tuesday, October 13, offered little room to recover from an uneasy debut. Katie relied heavily on prepared material and stopped taking questions after five and a half minutes.
Then questions about her legal credentials overwhelmed the conversation. Donald had described her as an attorney, while scrutiny focused on her having presented herself as a lawyer despite failing the bar exam.
On Friday's "Fox and Friends," Lawrence Jones asked whether she wished she had told Donald about not passing the bar. Katie replied, "Well, Lawrence, those questions weren't asked."
The public support had sounded absolute only days earlier. On Wednesday, White House communications director Steven Cheung had said people throughout the building were impressed and predicted that, by the end of Donald's second term, Katie would rank among the greats.
By Friday afternoon, Donald was recounting a rather different conversation. Heading across the South Lawn before leaving for a midterm rally in Georgia, he told reporters he had encouraged Katie to reconsider the job.
Three people familiar with the matter told the newspaper that Katie had been ousted. Donald suggested she could remain involved in a more pleasant capacity, and Steven subsequently announced that she would move into another role to be identified later.
Five working days, one brief appearance at the podium, and an exit under intense scrutiny. That was the recent experience attached to the vacancy Donald now wanted his longtime friend to fill.
Dana's Answer Suddenly Put Washington Within Reach
Against that background, CNN reported that a person familiar with the matter said Dana had declined. It sounded like a straightforward ending to a spectacularly unconventional recruitment pitch.
Then Dana spoke for himself.

During a same-day interview shared by MMA Crazy, a reporter brought up Donald's post and Dana's acknowledgment of it on his own social media. Asked for his reaction, Dana offered an answer with rather more urgency than a polite thank-you.
"I'm flying to Washington, D.C. right now. Yeah, straight after this. Yeah, right now."
For someone reportedly passing on the opportunity, that was quite a destination to announce. The reporter then pressed him on the practical problem: his UFC responsibilities already filled a formidable schedule. How could he fit this alongside everything else?

"Yeah, I've got a lot of jobs already," Dana said.
Asked about his conversations with Donald, he withheld the private discussion but supplied a concrete next step. "No. I'm going to meet with him. We have a meeting on Monday, so I'm sure I'll have more to talk about after that. Watch this space, see what happens."
Monday fell on November 9. Dana repeated that he was leaving for Washington and expected to have something to discuss afterward, keeping the question of his next move very much alive.
The Podium Picture Came With Five Loaded Words
On his Instagram Story, Dana shared an edited graphic of himself behind the White House briefing-room lectern. He wore a black blazer over a black T-shirt, with the American flag beside him and "THE WHITE HOUSE WASHINGTON" visible in the setting.
Underneath it sat the caption: "On to the next chapter."
Well, THAT was an image to choose while people were trying to work out his answer. He had placed himself directly into the setting of the job Donald wanted him to take, with wording that suggested movement toward something new.

An edited picture could not settle the appointment, and the caption did not supply a formal acceptance. But paired with his announced trip and meeting, it made the possibility much harder to dismiss casually.
To understand why Donald might make such an extraordinary offer, though, it helps to go back long before either man could stage a UFC event on presidential grounds.
Donald Opened a Door When the UFC Needed One
Dana and the president's connection took shape in Atlantic City, New Jersey, where the UFC's future looked far less comfortable than its present. According to ESPN, 36 states had banned the promotion when New Jersey regulators permitted its first sanctioned event at Donald's Taj Mahal hotel and casino on November 17, 2000.

At UFC 28, Randy Couture returned to the organization for the first time since 1997 and reclaimed the heavyweight championship from Kevin Randleman. About 5,000 spectators attended, including Dana, who was there as fighter John Lewis's manager.
With him were his friends Lorenzo Fertitta and Frank Fertitta III, Las Vegas casino owners who trained in jiu-jitsu under John. They talked about what they could do with a mixed martial arts promotion of their own.
Three months later, Dana returned to the same property for UFC 30 with a new title: UFC president. Donald had given the organization somewhere to put on its fights when plenty of other venues wanted nothing to do with it.

The relationship grew into a friendship spanning roughly a quarter-century. Donald attended numerous UFC events, including four appearances as a sitting president, while Dana introduced him at two Republican National Conventions.
By June 14, 2026, on Donald's 80th birthday, that bond had helped bring UFC Freedom 250 to the White House grounds. Presidents had welcomed champions and hosted amateur sports before, but a live professional fight card on the property was unprecedented.

For Dana, the affection was personal. Speaking to ESPN before that event, he placed Donald among a close circle of just 10 friends.
"He is one of my very good friends," he said. "Me and this guy have been friends for 25 years and ... our relationship gets stronger every year."
That history gave the latest invitation a weight beyond a celebrity name dropped into a presidential post. Dana had repeatedly shown up for Donald, and Donald had supported Dana's business when it needed a willing host.

Behind the Republican Appearances, They Talked About "Rocky"
Their highly visible political alliance came with a surprisingly ordinary description of their time together. In a 2025 interview with Jon Wertheim for CBS News, Dana said dinners with Donald did not revolve around politics.
"We talk about 'Rocky' movies. We talk about different fights that have happened," he said.
The "60 Minutes" conversation also addressed the impression that the UFC had chosen a political side. Dana had attended Donald's inauguration and sat behind former presidents, an appearance that attracted speculation about an exchange with Barack Obama.
Dana said Barack turned around, shook his hand, and congratulated him on his success. He recalled thanking the former president and said an incumbent or former president wishing to attend a UFC event should be treated respectfully.
His Republican convention appearances remained a conspicuous expression of loyalty to Donald Trump. Yet Dana described that loyalty through a friendship that included shared entertainment and ordinary conversation, alongside the extraordinary access.
And he hardly pretended to be a cautious personality. Asked about people viewing him as a bully, Dana showed little concern before offering a blunt description of his approach to relationships.
"Listen, if you want to be my friend, I'm the best friend you'll ever have. You want to be my enemy? I'm really good at bein' that too."
Before the Presidential Access Came a $2 Million Bet
The career that made Dana such an unusual candidate began far from the White House. Born in Manchester, Connecticut, he spent much of his life in Las Vegas, Nevada, boxed as an amateur, and developed gym programs combining boxing with aerobics.
According to his IMDb biography, he attended Bishop Gorman High School in Las Vegas, where he became friends with Lorenzo. Reconnecting at a wedding in 1995 helped introduce Lorenzo to the emerging business of mixed martial arts.
Dana managed fighters including Chuck Liddell and Tito Ortiz before taking an executive position. Zuffa, the Fertitta brothers' company, purchased the UFC for $2 million on January 9, 2001, with Dana receiving a 10 percent stake and the presidency.

Success took serious money and patience. Three years after the purchase, the promotion's deficit exceeded $30 million, and its owners pursued television as a way to build an audience.
They paid Spike TV $10 million for airtime for "The Ultimate Fighter," produced in September and October 2004 and broadcast in 2005. During its first live finale, Forrest Griffin defeated Stephan Bonnar by judges' decision, and both fighters received UFC contracts.
Their bout helped persuade the network to renew the series and pay for subsequent rights. Dana's visibility grew alongside the promotion, with interviews and face-offs making him familiar to viewers.

On July 11, 2016, Lorenzo confirmed the sale that valued the UFC at $4 billion, with WME-IMG acquiring the majority. Dana stayed on as president and retained minority ownership.
He had helped turn a struggling purchase into a multibillion-dollar business. A new role would therefore raise questions about how he divided his time across responsibilities he had spent decades building.
At Home, His Children Had Already Learned to Share Him
There was also a family behind the public schedule. Dana and his wife, Anne White, had known each other since they were 12, dated through their younger years, and married in 1996.
They welcomed their eldest son, Dana III, in 2001, followed by Aidan in 2002 and daughter Savannah in 2006. Long before a presidential job offer entered the conversation, the children had learned that going out with their father often meant sharing him with strangers.

In a 2009 interview with Yahoo Sports, Dana recalled his sons noticing how often people wanted photographs. Trips to the movies could be interrupted by someone approaching or a call he needed to answer, and he credited his family with handling those demands well.
His boys had started training at three, initially in boxing and later in Muay Thai. Dana planned to hold off on jiu-jitsu until they were 12 because there was already enough fighting between them at home without adding submission holds.
For all his investment in the sport, he did not insist his children follow him into it. Asked how he would respond if they wanted to become fighters at 18, he explained that their happiness mattered more to him than a particular career.
"My thing with my kids is, I want my kids to do something they absolutely love to do."
He even imagined supporting a child who loved working at a gas station, reasoning that enthusiasm could eventually lead to owning a whole group of them. His closing thought was simple: "And at the end of the day, it's all about being happy."
Now his own possible career change had put a very public question in front of the family man and fight promoter. Dana had pointed toward Monday, leaving everyone waiting to learn how far that next chapter would go.
