Several fans expressed surprise, with one writing, "MacGyver! Blimey, didn't recognise him, a real hunk back in late 80s." Another remarked, "Heartbreaking to see how much he's aged... Used to be the hottest guy on tv."
Others responded more lightheartedly, with one commenter saying, "Wow I can't recognise Richard Dean Anderson will have to call McGyver for advice." One added, "He wouldn't be unrecognizable if he got a haircut and a shave, just saying."
The reactions were mixed, with many others defending the actor. "It's obvious who it is. Everyone ages and he looks great for his age. It's the unflattering photo that isn't doing him justice," one fan commented. Another person said, "It's MacGyver… He's totally recognizable," while someone else pointed out, "Leave the man alone you also will get old one day."
The post also prompted references to his most iconic roles. One fan simply commented, "Jack O'Neal," invoking his character from the long-running series "Stargate SG-1."
Though opinions varied, the image served as a reminder of Anderson's long-lasting impact on television. For many, the sight of the actor, regardless of how different he may appear today, brought back strong memories of his heyday.

Anderson was born on January 23, 1950, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and raised in nearby Roseville alongside his three younger brothers. His mother was a talented artist, and his father worked as a high school teacher. After exploring various paths, Anderson got his big break in 1976 when he was cast as Dr. Jeff Webber on "General Hospital."
He stayed on the show for five years before moving on to prime-time roles, including parts on "The Facts of Life" and "The Love Boat." He then went on to star in short-lived series like "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers" and "Emerald Point N.A.S." (1983). His major breakthrough came in 1985 when he was cast as the lead in the ABC adventure series "MacGyver."

The role spanned seven seasons and 139 episodes, gaining global popularity. He reprised the role in two TV movies in 1994, "MacGyver: Lost Treasure of Atlantis" and "MacGyver: Trail to Doomsday." Both were produced by his own company, Gekko Film Corp, which he co-founded with Michael Greenburg.

Following "MacGyver," Anderson continued acting in made-for-TV films including "In the Eyes of a Stranger," "Through the Eyes of a Killer," "Beyond Betrayal," "Past the Bleachers" and "Pandora's Clock." In 1995, he returned to series television in "Legend," a short-lived UPN adventure comedy where he portrayed Ernest Pratt, a novelist who adopted the identity of his fictional hero, Nicodemus Legend.

Anderson found renewed success in 1997 when he was cast as Colonel Jack O'Neill in "Stargate SG-1," a science fiction series based on the 1994 film. He appeared on the show through 2005, and his character became a fan favorite. His presence continued in the franchise's spin-offs, including "Stargate: Atlantis" and "Stargate Universe."
During his career, Anderson's personal life changed dramatically. In 1996, he met Apryl Prose through his business partner, Greenburg. Prose, a former prop and wardrobe stylist, had heard about Anderson's dating history and initially assumed he wouldn't settle down. However, after their introduction over lunch in New York City, they quickly formed a connection.

By the end of the week, they had become close. Prose later told her mother she'd met someone she wanted to be with forever, but added, "He's got a bad reputation." Anderson described Prose as "extremely beautiful" and said he "adored" her sense of humor. In November 1997, she called him to say she was three weeks pregnant.
Although the pregnancy was unplanned, Anderson was calm and supportive, telling her it would be great — he'd always wanted to be a father. When the reality sank in, he cried and began reading every parenting book he could find. He also attended yoga labor-prep classes with Prose.

Their daughter, Wylie Quinn Annarose, was born on August 2, 1998, and Anderson later said he could sit and stare at her all day. He took over feedings, diaper changes, and everything in between, calling her birth "the most overwhelming experience" of his life. When Wylie was born, she didn't breathe at first and had to be revived.
Anderson said he collapsed with relief after seeing she was safe. Though his relationship with Prose ended in 2003, his commitment to fatherhood deepened. By 2017, he had semi-retired from acting, living on a farm and taking care of Wylie and their dogs. He described himself as a homebound father who took her to and from school each day.
He once proudly posted a picture of Wylie after her middle school graduation and said it was a moment he would always cherish. Despite stepping away from public life, Anderson has occasionally shared glimpses of his family life online, showing the strong bond he maintains with his daughter.
The recent online attention around his appearance may have surprised some fans, but for others, it was just a reminder of how much time has passed and how much the actor once described by some as Hollywood's "busiest bachelor" has changed his priorities.
