Fans Outraged by Honey Boo Boo's Fear Over Mama June's Transformation
A former reality television child star is opening up about a deeply personal struggle that fans never saw coming.
Alana "Honey Boo Boo" Thompson has revealed that her mother's drastic weight loss transformation had a lasting psychological impact on her. In a new interview released in May 2025, the 19-year-old reality star reflected on how Mama June's physical changes altered her own self-image and left her with fears about beauty standards.
Speaking to People, Alana described how she didn't initially realize the toll her mother's weight loss had taken on her during her childhood. But as she grew older, she began to see the emotional and mental consequences.
She admitted it was difficult to comprehend such a dramatic shift, recalling that June went "from being 300 lb. to like 100 lb." Alana added, "It was kind of scary. If I'm being honest, it was like, how did she lose all of that weight so fast?"
Alana confessed that her mother's transformation affected how she viewed her own body. She explained that Mama June's surgery and sudden change made her question if being thin was the only acceptable image.
"Her having to get surgery and shrink down to this one size made me think, 'Oh, am I going to have to do that one day because I'm a bigger girl?'" she said. "It definitely did take a toll on my self-image for sure."
Mama June, whose real name is June Shannon, became widely known for her weight loss journey and the subsequent push into fitness content. Over the years, she promoted various products, including appetite-suppressing shots from Boombod.
In 2021 and 2022, she shared multiple posts on Instagram claiming the shots reduced bloating, with captions like: "These shots help with hitting those goals and crushing cravings."
By June 2024, Mama June had shifted her focus to compounded medications, crediting them for helping her approach her new goal of 250 pounds. She referred to herself as a "bariatric patient" and said these medications had "changed [her] life dramatically."
Currently, Alana is thriving as a nursing student in Denver, where she spends most of her time studying either at home or on campus. She expressed pride in being on the path to becoming the first in her family to earn a college degree.
Despite her difficult upbringing, she said she is focused on maturing and creating a stable future for herself. Her older sister, Lauryn "Pumpkin" Shannon, who played a pivotal role in Alana’s upbringing after Mama June’s troubles, now has children of her own.
According to Alana, their mother, now sober for almost three years, watches Pumpkin’s kids and hosts Sunday dinners, something Alana never thought she would see. This shift has brought their family closer, especially after the loss of their sister Anna.
After the interview was uploaded online, fans were quick to share their thoughts on Alana's revelations and the family's long-running issues. Many were critical of Mama June's influence on her daughter.
One wrote, "June caused this family downfall!!!" Another person commented, "Dear God, this family will do anything and they will say anything just to get money. What a joke."
Some were even more direct, adding, "It's amazing that parents aren't being charged with child abuse.. clearly the child has been suffering for years. Let's start going after these child abusers!! Despicable! [sic]" One netizen wrote, "400lbs and a child. Disgusting."
However, others voiced their support for Alana and her older sister. One person praised them by writing, "What a beautiful story. Alana has come through shining !! Pumpkin deserves kudos !!!"
Another wrote, "You look beautiful, so proud of your success at breaking the cycle. Going to CO was the best decision you ever made. And nurses make good money!" One fan added, "I wish Alana and pumpkin everything good! Despite the odd Stay overcame so so much that most young people would never survive Kudos to them ❤️❤️❤️ [sic]."
Others simply offered kind words. One person shared, "Still love you honey boo boo, you are awesome!!" One fan added, "❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️Love it keep on going no matter what they say."
Another person stated, "Your a smart young adult now and don't let anyone tell you differently. Beautiful person in and outside.Sending love and support to you and your siblings. I hope you all [sic]."
The difficulties Alana faced highlight that public weight loss journeys often come with unexpected struggles for individuals and their loved ones.
Mama June seemed to have a positive experience with her supplements and medications, but other celebrities, like Amy Schumer, have had different experiences. As previously reported, the comedian discussed her experience with weight loss medications and their effects on her health during an appearance on "The Howard Stern Sirius XM Show" on January 29.

While her transformation wasn't as dramatic as Mama June's, Schumer admitted that the process wasn't easy. The comedian and actress shared with Stern that she had tried the medication Ozempic nearly three years ago. While some people succeeded with it, she explained that the experience was grueling for her.
"I have this gene, GDF15, which makes you extremely prone to nausea, which is why I was so sick during my pregnancy," the comedian explained. "So I tried Ozempic almost three years ago, and I was like a veteran. I was vomiting, and then you have no energy."
Furthermore, despite losing weight quickly, she said the toll it took on her body wasn't worth it. "I looked great, but I couldn't lift my head off the pillow," the actress admitted.
Over the years, Schumer's weight has fluctuated, but the most notable changes came after she became a mother. Before that, such as at the December 2013 premiere of "Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues," she appeared healthy and of average size.

Her weight loss afterward was not a drastic change but a shift toward a healthier version of herself. Furthermore, the actress seems to have maintained what she lost while taking Ozempic.
On January 28, 2025, Schumer appeared on "The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon," looking radiant in a chic outfit highlighting her toned figure.

Schumer's openness about her struggles with the popular medication resonated with many fans, who shared their own experiences online. Some related to the difficulties, with one commenting, "It made me really super sick as well."
Others were more supportive, praising her figure. "You stopped Ozempic? I couldn't tell, you look great!" another fan wrote. Meanwhile, some netizens shared different perspectives, with one stating, "It worked great for me! I lost 85 lbs. three years ago from it and had zero side effects [sic]."
