As The Hollywood Reporter revealed in September 2025, the film explores both the joy John brought to audiences and the more complicated, vulnerable parts of his life.

The documentary was directed by Colin Hanks and produced by Ryan Reynolds, and its emotional teaser featured reflections from people who knew John and his work, including Dave Thomas, Catherine O'Hara, Martin Short and Eugene Levy.

In the trailer, Dave described the instant effect John had on people: "This is a guy who, the minute you see his face, you're going to smile." But the film also examines the personal struggles behind that familiar smile, including the childhood trauma John experienced after unexpectedly losing his own father at a young age.

"That's the reason he didn't want to do 'Saturday Night Live,'" she said. "He knew the lifestyle wasn't going to be healthy for him. He was smart in that way."
