Meet Hideki Matsuyama's Wife, Who Lives Out of the Spotlight
The PGA Tour star has kept details about his personal life private over the years, which is why it came as a surprise to fans when he casually mentioned his marriage during a press conference.
Hideki Matsuyama is not only a professional golfer but also a devoted family man. He once noted that the media had never brought up the subject of his love life before. Although he revealed that he was married, he made it clear he intended to keep that part of his life away from public attention.
Who Is Hideki Matsuyama's Wife?
Following the 2017 PGA Championship, Hideki disclosed that he had married Mei Matsuyama in January of that year. There are reportedly no public records detailing where the couple wed or how Hideki proposed.
The news caught golf fans off guard. During an interview at the Northern Trust Open in August 2017, Hideki explained why he had kept his personal life under wraps:
"As far as the family and privacy, no one really asked me if I was married, or, you know, so I didn't have to answer that question. But I felt that after the PGA would be a good time, because our baby is born and I thought that would be a good time to let everyone know."
When congratulated, Hideki responded, "Of course, happy about the family. But golf is golf. Once we get on the golf course, that's what I'm thinking about." Just a month earlier, Hideki had also surprised many by announcing that he and Mei had welcomed their only child, a daughter named Kanna Matsuyama. The couple has now been married for eight years.
Little is known about Mei and Kanna, as neither appeared publicly when Hideki achieved one of the most significant milestones in his career.
Hideki Matsuyama's Historic Masters Triumph
Hideki made history in 2021 when he became the first Japanese male golfer to win a Major title at the Masters Tournament. After his victory, he spoke about his family:
"I was thinking about them all the way around today. I'm really happy that I played well for them."
The win ended a four-year title drought, and he has since added three more PGA Tour victories: the 2021 Zozo Championship, the 2022 Sony Open, and the 2024 Genesis Invitational.
His record-breaking performances began early, as an amateur, a World University Games gold medalist, and a back-to-back Asian Amateur Championship winner. He also made a mark at the Masters in 2011 and 2012, later winning the first eight Japan Tour titles of his career.
Born in Ehime, Japan, the 33-year-old turned professional in 2013 after being introduced to the sport by his father. He is a Tohoku Fukushi University alumnus. His homeland was devastated in March 2011 by an earthquake and tsunami that claimed 20,000 lives.
Hideki's marriage to Mei and their life together has largely remained out of public view. While his accomplishments on the golf course are well-documented, his commitment to protecting his family's privacy remains firm.
His victories have not only brought him global recognition but have also made him a trailblazer for Japanese golf. Hideki's quiet dedication to both his sport and his loved ones continues to define his legacy.
