Holly Hatcher, 62, an educator and mother of rising country singer Spencer Hatcher, was killed just before midnight on August 3, 2025, when a Maryland man allegedly broke into her Rockingham County home. Police say the intruder fatally stabbed her, wounded her husband, and was then shot dead in self-defense, in a case that has shocked their county.

The attacker, identified as 41-year-old Kevin Moses Walker from Pikesville, was killed during the confrontation when Holly's husband, Michael Hatcher, 65, went outside, retrieved a handgun from his car, and fired to protect himself.

On August 7, the Hatcher family and the Rockingham County Sheriff's Office released a joint video statement featuring Spencer, his father, and Sheriff Bryan Hutcheson, who provided more details about the incident and the ongoing investigation to clarify the details and address speculation.

During his turn, Sheriff Bryan began by talking about his connection to the Hatcher family and how Holly had been a wonderful teacher in their community. He hoped to put rumors to rest by presenting only verified facts in this "highly unusual" case.

"Definitely, a highly unusual, apparently a completely random situation with an individual with no known history of violent behavior of any kind or even criminal behavior of any kind," he stated about Kevin. "[...] Speaking personally, this is 31 years in law enforcement, I have never seen anything like it in my entire career. Just the way, the unusual, unique, and just crazy situation that this turned out to be."

The sheriff outlined the attacker's movements, beginning on the afternoon of Friday, August 1, when Kevin rented a campsite at Endless Caverns, a local RV park and tourist attraction.

Hours later, CCTV footage captured him leaving a Walmart shortly after 5 p.m. with a sleeping bag and a large knife that he had just purchased. On the morning of Saturday, August 2, Virginia State Police found an abandoned car on Endless Caverns Road with a one-night parking pass to the site inside.

It appeared to have been in a crash, and officers then discovered the Endless Caverns store had damage, suggesting a vehicle had collided with it.

Even though Kevin had been in the store and the caverns, authorities found nothing had been stolen. A background check showed he had a license and no outstanding warrants. Unfortunately, despite deploying patrol cars and a drone, police could not find him.

The following evening, at 11:58 p.m., police were called to the Hatchers' home, located in the 13,000 block of North Valley Pike. Deputies arrived to find Michael injured outside, Kevin dead in the driveway, and Holly inside, killed by wounds from a large knife.

According to Sheriff Bryan, the investigation remains ongoing, particularly concerning the motive, and updates will be provided as they become available. No charges will be filed since Kevin is deceased.

Michael also spoke in the statement, beginning by thanking the public and his community for supporting him and his three sons during this difficult time.

He also described how authorities and first responders treated his injuries that night, and how all involved had committed themselves fully to the investigation. Their help and honesty, including caring for the family's pets and providing necessities while their home was a crime scene, had been invaluable to the Hatchers.

"You know, I've heard a lot of you say that there are no words to explain this, and there aren't, and there's going to be questions that will never be answered," Michael shared, quickly getting emotional. "But all I can tell you is we've cried, we've hurt, and we've hugged, and we have found more love than we have ever known has existed between us and between you. Thank you."

Now, the community is left to mourn this senseless tragedy. The rising 27-year-old country star announced on August 5, via his Instagram, that he would be canceling his shows at the VOA Country Music festival in Ohio and at the Rockingham County Fair in Virginia.

Spencer said he hoped to reschedule the canceled shows for his fans and thanked everyone who had supported him and his family, requesting privacy for them at this time. The post garnered over 100 supportive comments from his followers.
