The Navy Son Who Chose the Stage

Born January 5, 1931, in San Diego, Robert Selden Duvall was the middle of three sons of Rear Adm. William Duvall and Mildred, an amateur actress. According to a detailed People profile that has since been archived, the family moved frequently before settling in Annapolis when he was ten.

His father was described as "a gentleman but a seether," stern and often away. Meanwhile, like his mother, young Bobby was a mimic and a cutup, but also a wrestler who would boast, "I got muscles like piano wire."

At Principia College, he drifted until his parents nudged him toward drama. "They shoved me in that direction just to find something I could enjoy." His debut as a harlequin mime got him his first A.

After two years in the Army Signal Corps, he moved to New York in 1955 to study at the Neighborhood Playhouse alongside Dustin Hoffman and Gene Hackman.

Theater and TV followed, and then his quiet, haunting turn as Arthur "Boo" Radley in 1962's "To Kill a Mockingbird." "It was terrific to be given that part," he later said. "I think I did okay."

Then came 1972…

As Tom Hagen in "The Godfather," Robert delivered an Oscar-nominated performance that cemented his place in cinema history. Director Francis Ford Coppola famously said:

"Actors click into character at different times [...] Bobby's hot after one or two takes. That's all he needs."

Robert's only regret? "I just wish I had a better hairpiece." Classic.

An Academy Award win in 1984 crowned decades of work. Yet off-screen, his personal life was unfolding in equally dramatic chapters.

Marriage No. 1: Barbara Benjamin (1964–1975)

In 1964, Robert married L.A. Model Barbara Benjamin. A year later, they moved with her daughters, Suzan and Nancy, into a sprawling 15-room home in Tuxedo Park, N.Y., according to People.

Nicknamed "Baba," he embraced fatherhood, carpooling, hiking, fishing, horseback riding, and playing tennis with the little girls. Nancy Horne later shared, "He still introduces me as 'my daughter.'" But by 1975, the marriage ended.

Robert summed it up with three words: "Things burn out." It was blunt and honest, with no dramatics involved.

Marriage No. 2: Gail Youngs (1982–1986)

Gail Youngs met Robert when she was a young actress, and he was starring in "American Buffalo" alongside her brother John Savage, as detailed by The New York Times.

Her words about their encounter were simple: "And I fell in love." But living with a perfectionist wasn't easy, as Gail later told People, "Bobby's a magnificent person on some levels with more joie de vivre than anyone I know. But he's a tortured soul on other levels. He's just so driven by his need for perfection."

The marriage ended in 1986.

Marriage No. 3: Sharon Brophy (1991–1995)

When it came to his third time walking down the aisle, Dance Instructor Sharon Brophy brought movement and rhythm into Robert's life. However, their four-year marriage ended in 1995, according to People.

Marriage No. 4: Luciana Pedraza Duvall: 'Love at First Dip'

In 1996, on a Buenos Aires street, everything changed. According to People, it was there that Robert met Luciana Pedraza Duvall, the oldest of five daughters of a trucking firm owner. On their first date, he introduced her to tango culture.

"With Duvall [sic] it was love at first dip," the profile noted. When she told Robert, who was 66 at that time, she was 24, he joked, "Oh my God, Policia!" Her father, 20 years younger than Robert, teased, "I don't know whether to call you father — or son."

Robert later told Esquire:

"I met my wife in Argentina. The flower shop was closed, so I went to the bakery. If the flower shop had been open, I never would've met her."

At first, he worried about the age gap, even asking Wilford Brimley for advice. The response? "Let me tell you something, my friend, the worst thing in the world for an old man is an old woman!"

Robert and Luciana went on to build a life between a 250-year-old Virginia farmhouse in The Plains (population: 266) and a 190-acre Argentine spread near her family. He "grabbed" the farmhouse during foreclosure and left Manhattan behind.

Winters were spent in Argentina, and days were filled with tango practice, long walks with their three dogs, and shared meals. Robert — who didn't smoke or drink — made Maryland crab cakes from his mother's recipe. His tuna salad was shipped from a New York deli, and barbecue came from Texas.

Luciana, an aspiring documentary filmmaker, kept him fit with tango, healthy cooking, and basement workouts. "We're constantly together," Robert once shared. "It's a good time."

Commenting on the couple's love, Robert's late brother Bud observed, "Bobby's had a scattered life. I've never seen him so together."

After decades of searching, he found stillness.

Did He Ever Have Children?

Despite four marriages, Robert had no biological children. In 2007, he candidly told Details magazine:

"I guess I'm shooting blanks. (I've tried) with a lot of different women, in and out of marriage. I thought of adoption, but (my wife and I) haven't yet."

His words were vulnerable, unfiltered, and deeply human.

Horses, Dogs, and the Need to Work

As far as his hobbies were concerned, Robert adored horses and rural life. In a Facebook video, he divulged:

"I enjoy having a routine. Though I never went to the gym to get in shape for films. I preferred tennis, swimming, or horseback riding to keep me in shape."

He didn't smoke, didn't drink; he cooked, and walked dogs. And above all, he enjoyed working, as he once expressed, "I like to work. I need to work."

His Final Message to His Beloved Fans

Before his passing, he recorded one last message to fans in a video, where he expressed, "Have a happy, happy Thanksgiving, and a great year coming up! God bless!"

It was warm and sincere, and profoundly Robert.

A Peaceful Farewell at 95

Years after living such a colorful and fulfilling life, the beloved actor sadly passed away at 95 years old on February 15, 2026. The image shared alongside the announcement of his death captures Robert in reflective repose, dignified, composed, unmistakably himself, alongside his dearly loved now-widow Luciana.

In the moving statement, Luciana penned:

"Yesterday we [sic] said goodbye to my beloved husband, cherished friend, and one of the greatest actors of our time. Bob passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by love and comfort."

She continued, "To the world, he was an Academy Award-winning actor, a director, a storyteller. To me, he was simply everything." Luciana also thanked fans for "the years of support" and asked for privacy "to celebrate the memories he leaves behind."

To the public, he was monumental; to Luciana, he was home.

A Life of Passion and Peace

Four marriages; endless roles; tango at sunset; crab cakes in Virginia, and three dogs at his feet, Robert lived intensely; he loved repeatedly, and in the end, he left quietly at home, surrounded by love.

At this time, we wish to extend our most heartfelt condolences to Luciana, Robert's entire family, his loved ones, friends, colleagues, fans, and all who knew and loved him, as they mourn such a significant loss. We hope for their healing amid their time of grief. RIP, dear Robert.
