School Outcast Who Had Money Shaken from Pockets Became A-Lister and Later Ignited Buzz Over Shocking Affair Reveal — His Life In 30+ Photos
Before the sold-out arenas and the tabloid firestorm over who he allegedly took to bed, this man was just a scrawny kid getting turned upside down in a school hallway while coins rained out of his pockets.
It sounds like a scene from a movie. In a way, it became one. What started as a childhood defined by humiliation slowly transformed into one of the most talked-about careers in comedy — and later, one of its most talked-about scandals.
The same boy who was bused into hostile territory and made to feel like an outsider grew up to command stages, earn millions, and build a family. But the cracks in that picture came years before the public knew they were there.
The Kid Nobody Wanted Around
Every morning, he was loaded onto a bus and dropped into a world that was not built for him. Transported out of his own community into an all-white school in Gerritsen Beach, south Brooklyn, he quickly became a daily target for the other kids.
The bullying was not subtle. It was physical, humiliating, and designed to remind him exactly where he stood in that building. Years later, he would come face to face with one of his worst tormentors, not at a school reunion, but on a film set.

"I was doing a movie a couple of years ago, and one of my bullies was working security on the movie — a guy who literally, one day at school, turned me upside down and shook the money out of my pockets," he recalled.
He did not call for the man to be fired. He did not humiliate him in front of the crew. He simply looked at him and kept walking.

"He was kind of ashamed, and I just gave him a quick look like, you know, I hope you're doing well. Take care. And I kept it moving. I didn't, like, 'Get him off the set! Get him fired!' It's like, his sin has punished him."

The quiet victory, he explained, was in simply existing at full force while the man watched.
"The fact that he had to go through that whole day, watch me walk around, and watch me be me in all my glory and be so close to me but yet so [...] far… I didn't have to do anything," he added.

As he got older, comedy became his escape route. Eventually, the bullied kid from Brooklyn transformed into one of Hollywood’s most recognizable stars: Chris Rock.

Marriage and Family Life
By 1994, Rock had already carved out a name for himself in Hollywood. At an Essence magazine awards ceremony he crashed that year, he met Malaak Compton, a Hollywood publicist whose portfolio included coordinating actor Laurence Fishburne for UNICEF.

Their relationship stretched across both coasts, shaped by her demanding travel schedule and his life on the road. Ten months later, they were husband and wife.

For years, the marriage appeared solid. In 2007, when divorce rumors began to circulate, he pushed back firmly.

"The best part is just having a partner," he said. "There is no real worst part. I'm not going to say there's a worst part. I mean, I'm a comedian — comedians like to work alone. So maybe I'm not the ideal guy to be married to, in that sense."

The Split That Shocked No One Close to Them
In December 2014, the marriage officially came to an end, nearly two decades after it began. Compton addressed the public directly.

"After much contemplation and 19 years of marriage, Chris and I have decided to go our separate ways," she stated. "While recognizing that this is a significant change, my children remain at the center of my life, and their well-being is my top priority."

Rock's attorney confirmed the filing. And a source close to the couple did not mince words: "This was a long time coming. Chris has known it wasn't salvageable for a while. He was the one to file because he knew it was time to just move forward already."

Three years before the announcement, the couple had publicly denied claims that he had fathered a child outside the marriage. The divorce was finalized in 2016 at a New Jersey courthouse, with financial details — including child support — kept out of public view.

He Came Clean and Gave a Number
Three years after the separation, he sat down and laid it all bare. He admitted to being unfaithful to Compton during their marriage — not once, but with three separate women.

At the time, he had told himself it was justified. He was the one bringing home the money. He had earned the right.

He acknowledged the damage it caused. "Your significant other, if they really love you, has a high opinion of you," he explained. "And you let them down."
The confession detonated across Hollywood. Everyone wanted to know the same thing: who were the three women?

Rumors About a Famous Actress
One name rose above the rest. According to sources who spoke to Page Six, one of the women was Kerry Washington, his co-star in the film "I Think I Love My Wife," a movie built entirely around a married man who fantasizes about cheating on his spouse.

"That went on for a while, for like six months, and she found out. There's no gray area," a source told the outlet.

The rumors had actually been circulating as far back as 2007, when Washington was engaged to actor David Moscow. Neither party ever publicly confirmed the alleged affair.

His Ex-Wife Moved Forward and Found Real Happiness
While her ex-husband's name stayed tangled in headlines, Compton quietly stepped into a new chapter. After the divorce was finalized, she began a relationship with businessman Eric Maurice, a man with a Hollywood connection of his own.

Maurice was previously married to "Abbott Elementary" star Sheryl Lee Ralph, in a ceremony in Jamaica in 1991, attended by Denzel Washington, before their divorce in 2001. He has two children from that marriage: daughter Ivy-Victoria, a stylist, and son Etienne, founder and CEO of WalkGood.

In June 2023, Compton and Maurice marked five years together. She shared photos from their travels on Instagram and wrote: "Since then it's been nothing but love, laughter, adventures, and growth. You are an awesome human and I love you so."

A close friend offered anniversary wishes in the comments and recalled meeting the pair for the first time, describing them as "teenagers in love."
The two have since explored Croatia, Guatemala, Spain, and beyond. When Maurice turned 60 in 2021, Compton honored him publicly as a wonderful man, an extraordinary friend, a loving father, and a devoted partner.

Co-Parenting, Caps, and a Proud Moment
Whatever history lies between them, the former couple has kept showing up together for their daughters.

On May 18, 2026, Malaak shared photos from Zahra Savannah's graduation ceremony at the University of Southern California, where their daughter earned a degree in English (Narrative Studies) with high honors, with both her parents standing proudly beside her.

Even after decades in the spotlight, Rock's story still fascinates fans. From being the boy whose pockets were emptied in a school hallway to watching his daughter walk across a university stage with honors, it is quite the distance traveled.
