Before she became one of the most recognizable voices in music and television, the future star was a little girl growing up on Chicago's South Side in a modest home filled with gospel music, faith, and family. But while her powerful voice helped launch her to stardom, it could not protect her from the devastating losses that would later define one chapter of her life.

Still, she refused to let tragedy become the end of her story. From surviving unimaginable grief to becoming an EGOT winner, losing 80 pounds, and raising her teenage son, she slowly rebuilt her life one step at a time.

The Church Choir Girl with a Voice Beyond Her Years

A little girl from Chicago once shared a bed with her mother because there was not much space at home. Her father was mostly absent, but music filled the house. Her grandmother had once been a soloist, and the family's local church became the place where the shy child discovered the voice that would one day make her famous.

According to The Guardian, teachers, neighbors, and church members noticed something different when the future star sang. Even as a teenager, people told her she sounded much older than she was. She later recalled practicing acceptance speeches in the mirror and singing in the hallway because the acoustics were better there.

The future star also grew up surrounded by faith. Her mother worked as a church secretary, and religion became a guiding force in their household.

In the same interview, she reflected on the lessons her mother taught her and said, "We always said: 'If He brings you to it, He will bring you through it.'" At the time, she could not have imagined how deeply those words would one day be tested.

The Phone Call That Changed Her Life Forever

By 2008, the Chicago native had already become a Grammy-winning singer and Oscar-winning actress. But while she was on tour that October, her life suddenly shattered.

She became worried after her mother stopped responding to her usual morning messages. Then her sister, Julia, called with devastating news: their mother, Darnell, and brother, Jason, had been shot and killed inside the family home. Julia's 7-year-old son, Julian, was also missing.

According to The Gaurdian, the singer rushed back to Chicago and waited with her sister for answers as authorities searched for Julian. Three days later, police found his body in the back of a stolen SUV.

The murders shocked the country and completely changed the singer's world. Prosecutors later accused Julia's estranged husband of carrying out the killings after threatening the family during the couple's separation.

Court coverage from the outlet showed that the trial forced the singer to relive the tragedy in public. In 2012, a jury found the suspect, William Balfour, guilty of murdering her mother, brother, and nephew. He received three life sentences.

Even after the verdict, however, she still faced the difficult task of finding peace after such devastating loss.

Why She Chose Forgiveness Instead of Hatred

Many people expected the singer to hold onto anger after the murders. Instead, she eventually chose forgiveness. During a conversation with Oprah Winfrey, the star explained that she viewed William's life through a different lens.

Reflecting on the environment he came from, she said, "I feel like, for the most part, it's not his fault. It's how he was brought up." She added, "We tried to offer love, but you were so far gone that you couldn't even see that."

According to the interview, she and her sister also created the Julian D. King Gift Foundation to honor her nephew's memory and support children in need.

Explaining why the project mattered so much to them, she shared, "We both wanted to find a way that we would not dread every birthday and holiday and family occasion again." As she searched for healing, another major life change gave her a reason to keep moving forward.

Just months after the tragedy, the singer became a mother for the first time. According to 6ABC, she welcomed a son in August 2009 with her then-fiancé. The timing was bittersweet, but she later admitted motherhood helped save her during one of the darkest periods of her life.

Reflecting on those painful years during her interview with Oprah, she once said, "I went from being an aunt, having a mum, and being a child to not having a mum, becoming a mum, and raising my own child." She also told her son directly, "You saved my life."

Motherhood became a turning point for the singer. While raising her son, she slowly rebuilt her confidence and began focusing on her own health and future. That transformation soon became visible to the entire world.

Her 80-Pound Weight Loss Inspired Millions

The woman behind the heartbreaking story is Jennifer Hudson. After years in the spotlight, she decided to make major lifestyle changes. At her heaviest, she reportedly wore a size 20.

By 2010, she had dropped to a size 10. According to Oprah.com, Jennifer later became one of Weight Watchers' most recognizable ambassadors and inspired fans with her honesty about body image and health.

Speaking about the transformation, she admitted Hollywood changed how she viewed herself after one interviewer referred to her as a "big girl" on the red carpet. "I didn't even know I was considered plus-sized until I came to Hollywood," she said.

The singer explained that she focused less on numbers and more on how she felt physically and emotionally. Still, she eventually confirmed the dramatic milestone herself.

"I've lost...80 pounds!" Jennifer proudly revealed during her conversation with Oprah. For her, the achievement carried even more meaning than one of Hollywood's highest honors.

She said, "I'm prouder of my weight loss than my Oscar." Her physical transformation became another symbol of how much her life had changed since the tragedy that once nearly broke her.
