The footage shows the athlete sitting down for what seemed like a routine, casual chat just days ago. Yet, looking back at the recording now, every single word feels incredibly heavy.

While he spoke of gratitude, viewers noticed an unexpected tone. Something he said — and something he almost said — is what's making his death so hard to process.

A Sudden Loss

On Saturday, June 13, 2026, the football community was completely blindsided by devastating news. Former San Francisco 49ers linebacker Aldon Smith passed away at the young age of 36.

The news was confirmed through an official statement from the San Francisco 49ers, who expressed total devastation over the situation. The organization remembered him for his undeniable talent, sheer dominance on the field, and an infectious smile.

Smith, who was born on September 25, 1989, originally attended the University of Missouri. There, he earned First-Team All-Big 12 honors and was named the school's Defensive Lineman of the Year in 2010.

San Francisco later drafted him as the seventh overall selection in the 2011 NFL Draft. During his remarkable career with the franchise, he appeared in 50 regular-season games and made 30 starts.

He recorded 152 tackles, 44.0 sacks, five passes defensed, five forced fumbles, one interception, and one fumble recovery. He also excelled in eight postseason contests, contributing another 5.5 sacks and 20 tackles.

As a rookie, his 14.0 sacks marked the second-most by any rookie in NFL history since 1982. He quickly earned First-Team Associated Press All-Pro honors in 2012 and a Pro Bowl selection in 2013.

His 19.5 sacks during his second year remain the highest single-season total in franchise history. Furthermore, his 33.5 sacks across his first two seasons set an all-time NFL record for a player starting out.

A Last Day Spent Giving Back

Details of his final hours gradually came to light. On that Saturday, Smith joined his friend Amir Shirazi in the Bay Area, volunteering to deliver pizzas to a local program supporting the homeless.

After completing a few errands together, the two returned to Shirazi's home in Los Gatos. Shirazi stepped inside briefly, leaving Smith seated in the pickup truck.

When he came back, he found the former athlete slumped over in the front passenger seat, motionless. At first, he thought Smith was asleep, but quickly realized something was wrong. Shirazi dialed 911 and reached out to former NFL running back Anthony Dixon for assistance.

Together, they tried to revive him until paramedics arrived. Smith was rushed to Good Samaritan Hospital in San Jose, where he was later pronounced dead. The Santa Clara County Medical Examiner's Office continues to investigate, with the official cause of death yet to be determined.

A History of Struggles

While Smith found elite success on the gridiron, his life off the field was notoriously complicated. His rapid ascent to NFL stardom was frequently slowed by a series of high-profile legal troubles.

According to a timeline compiled by ESPN, Smith faced a staggering 10 arrests over the course of nine years. His legal issues began with a 2012 driving under the influence arrest in Miami.

By 2013, he faced another DUI charge in San Jose after crashing his car into a tree. Later that same year, authorities arrested him for three felony charges of possessing illegal assault weapons.

These mounting issues led to a nine-game NFL suspension in 2014. The 49ers ultimately released him in August 2015 following a third DUI-related arrest involving hit-and-run and vandalism charges.

Smith signed with the Raiders in September 2015, recording 3.5 sacks before a year-long suspension sidelined him from 2016 to 2019. He was conditionally reinstated in May 2020 and played 16 games for the Cowboys.

He logged five sacks for Dallas, with his final career sack occurring against the Philadelphia Eagles on November 1, 2020. He attempted one last comeback with the Seahawks in 2021 but was waived following an off-the-field matter.

That release came shortly after a second-degree battery arrest in Louisiana. He officially announced his retirement in 2023, stating he was completely done with football.

In 2024, Smith tried to turn his personal battles into a positive force by launching a mentorship project called "I.M. Loading" to provide recovery coaching. He also served as a mentor to rookie classes for the Jacksonville Jaguars and Las Vegas Raiders.

The Video Everyone Is Watching

This brings us back to the chilling interview that has captivated the football community since his passing. Just days before his death, Smith sat down for an episode of "Laced Up," a YouTube series hosted by celebrity barber Tee Maultsby.

Filmed in the barber's chair, the show blends casual conversation with a haircut. The clip, uploaded on June 8, has since sparked an outpouring of emotion from fans, many saying they now hear a weight in his voice they missed the first time.

During the exchange, the former linebacker dropped several hints that he was carrying a heavy burden. When asked how he was doing, Smith didn't mask his feelings with a polished response. "I've definitely had better days," he admitted, repeating the phrase as if to underline the truth behind it.

Maultsby gave him space: "Well, you know this is a safe space, man. You want to elaborate? You want to talk about it?"

Smith paused. "Yeah, but I kind of don't," he replied. Then he tried anyway: "It's something I think I've been dealing with my whole life, and I'm just struggling with accepting how it's playing out right now."

Smith then called his own thoughts a bunch of gibberish. It didn't. And Maultsby told him so. From that point, Smith tried to find a positive angle.

Smith pivoted, not to deflect, but because he seemed to genuinely mean what came next. "No, to be honest, I'm grateful, man," he said. "I'm in a place of gratitude right now. It's been a tough week, but it's been rewarding, and it's starting to pay off. Things are starting to happen."

He also talked about what it felt like to be back in the Bay Area, a place where he'd built his name and burned some of it down, too. He described it as "kind of bittersweet."

The people had given him a warm reception, he said, but he wasn't sure he was ready to be back yet. "There [are] some things I kind of wanted... I wanted to have some things with me when I came back," he said, trailing off.

He further explained that it had not fully sunk in that his situation had changed. This made it difficult for him to let his guard down enough to truly enjoy his surroundings.

What Fans Are Saying

Now that Smith is gone, fans are rewatching this final public appearance with a completely different perspective. The comment section has transformed into a heartbreaking space of reflection.
