Missing University of Alabama Student Jimmy Gracey Passes Away in Barcelona: His Last Moments Revealed
Jimmy Gracey landed in Barcelona on a Monday, ready for spring break. By Tuesday morning, his friends had no idea where he was, and neither did anyone else.
The 20-year-old University of Alabama junior had flown in to visit friends studying abroad in Spain, with a return flight home already booked for the weekend. It was supposed to be a short, celebratory trip.
Instead, what unfolded over the next three days — from a nightclub in Olympic Village to a stretch of beach just steps away — would devastate everyone who knew him.
One Last Night Out
On Monday evening, Gracey headed out with his friends to Shôko, a high-end restaurant and nightclub in Barcelona's Olympic Village, right across from the beach at Port Olímpic.
Known for its Mediterranean-Asian dining and exclusive nightlife, it was exactly the kind of place you'd expect a group of college students to spend a spring break evening.
Sometime during the night, Gracey was photographed inside the club — what would become his last known picture. He was wearing a white T-shirt, dark pants, and a gold chain with a rhinestone cross.
At some point, the group began to splinter. One friend left earlier in the night. Gracey chose to stay.

Separated From the Group
He never made it back to his short-term rental that morning. His family reported him missing, and the search began.
"Unfortunately, he was separated from the rest of the group later into the night, and that was the last time we've heard from him," Theta Chi chapter president and fraternity brother Cavin McLay told CNN affiliate WBMA.
His family was firm about one thing from the start: this was out of character. "Jimmy is a kind, responsible, and devoted son and brother. It is completely out of character for him not to check in with family and friends," they said in an early statement.

What the Camera Caught
As the search got underway, the Mossos d'Esquadra — Barcelona's Catalan police force — pulled security camera footage from around the club. What they found stopped investigators in their tracks.
The footage, which has not been released to the public, showed Gracey outside Shôko at approximately 3 a.m., and he was not alone.

Gisela Macedo, a reporter for El Periódico in Barcelona, told CBS 42 that based on the footage, Gracey left the club with someone else, a detail that led authorities to suspect foul play.
Employees at Shôko declined to publicly comment but confirmed they handed their CCTV footage over to police. Whether it captured anything beyond what investigators already knew was never disclosed.

A Grim Clue
With foul play on the table, the operation expanded fast. Aquatic and underwater units combed the waters near the club. Officers on motorcycles patrolled the Barceloneta seafront neighborhood. A helicopter was called in to assist.
Then, on Wednesday, Gracey's wallet turned up floating in the sea, near Somorrostro beach, directly in front of Shôko. Maritime and aquatic teams immediately shifted their focus to that stretch of water.

His phone, which had been stolen at some point, was separately recovered by the police. His mother, Therese Gracey, confirmed this in a Facebook post. The Mossos d'Esquadra declined to share any details about it when asked.
Meanwhile, Gracey's father had flown to Barcelona from the United States to join the search in person. Friends who remained in the city made repeated trips back to Shôko, trying to piece together anything they could.

Three Days Later
On Thursday, March 19, police located a body in the shallow waters of Somorrostro beach, the same stretch of shoreline where the wallet had been found the day before, steps from the club.
The area was immediately cordoned off. Multiple law enforcement vehicles arrived at the scene, and forensic teams remained long after the discovery.
Barcelona police confirmed it was Gracey. Despite the earlier suspicion of foul play, the spokesperson's conclusion was definitive: "Everything points to it being an accident, not a criminal act."
His family said they will continue working with local authorities and the US Consulate to better understand what happened.

More Than a Missing Person
Away from the investigation, those who knew Gracey painted a picture of someone who was anything but a stranger to responsibility.
The eldest of five children, he helped his parents look after his younger siblings at home in Elmhurst, Illinois, according to his uncle David Gracey, a CNN senior producer in Washington, DC.
At the University of Alabama, he was an honors student in the accounting program. Within his Theta Chi chapter, he served as both chaplain and philanthropy chairman, roles that said a lot about who he was.
"He's the guy that goes out of his way to be there when someone needs it," McLay said.
Theta Chi Fraternity CEO Michael Mayer released a formal statement before the body was found, confirming that senior leadership had been in direct contact with fraternity members still in Barcelona, offering logistical support throughout the search.
He urged anyone with information to contact the US Consulate in Barcelona directly.
A Family's Grieving Words
The University of Alabama said Thursday that the campus community is "heartbroken" and that the school would continue supporting Gracey's family, friends, and classmates.
His family's statement was brief and raw: "Our family is struggling to come to terms with this unimaginable loss. We are profoundly grateful for the outpouring of love, support, and prayers from people around the world — so many helped to share Gracey's story and bring his life to light so that others may know him."
While authorities say the evidence suggests an accident, the exact sequence of events remains under review.
Gracey's case is not the first time a young American has gone missing and been found dead within days. Kaylee Russell, a 20-year-old from Evans, Colorado, vanished and was found dead four days later on December 4, 2025, discovered in an unexpected location.
As investigators worked to understand how she ended up there, the coroner revealed early findings, including an injury that raised more questions than answers.

The Vanishing That Shook a Town
Kaylee disappeared on Sunday, November 30, and by the middle of the week, her name was spreading across social media as the Evans Police Department and the Colorado Bureau of Investigation took to Facebook to issue a plea for help and shared more details of her last-known whereabouts.
The young woman had dropped her father off at the Loveland/Johnstown Park-N-Ride near Colorado 402 and I-25 at around 6:15 p.m.
She was then supposed to drive to a friend's house, but she never arrived. Authorities urged anyone who had seen her or her car to immediately call 911.
As days passed, the search intensified. A GoFundMe campaign was launched by Kristina Dahlstrom on behalf of Rebecca Russell, Kaylee's mother. Rebecca had stopped working to lead the search efforts herself, despite the growing financial strain.

The fundraiser's description offered a grim glimpse into the family's desperation. Not only had Kaylee missed her plans Sunday night, she also failed to show up to work the next day.
"Since Sunday evening, her phone has stopped sharing any data, and her whereabouts remain unknown," the campaign stated. It also revealed that Rebecca had already lost another child in the past and was now fighting with everything she had to bring Kaylee home.
The fundraiser urged locals to join the search and help however they could.
The Grim Discovery Beneath the Water
The hope that Kaylee would return alive was shattered when divers from emergency personnel made a shocking discovery. Inside a submerged vehicle, a black 2016 Volkswagen Tiguan, they found the body of a young woman.
The car had landed upside down in a canal near the Timnath Reservoir off Larimer County Road 1. At first, officials didn't confirm the identity, but by December 5, the CBI deactivated their alert and thanked the public for their help, confirming that Kaylee had been found.
The GoFundMe was updated soon after with a heartbreaking message, detailing that Kaylee was discovered but didn't make it. They left the campaign open in hopes of donations for funeral expenses as well as some financial support for the heartbroken mother.
A Mother's Grief and a Community's Kindness
In a text message to FOX31, Kaylee's mother described her daughter as someone with a "beautiful soul" and a fierce capacity for love. She remembered Kaylee as loyal, honest, and deeply passionate about what she believed in.
The community that rallied to find Kaylee also grieved her. A relative, Shelley McinTyre, posted a heartfelt thank-you on Facebook to all those who helped.
She also gave a special shoutout to Pedro's Coffee Shop, which stayed open for searchers to get warm, and Pizza Plus in Ault, which offered them free food.
The Weld County School District RE-9, where Kaylee graduated with the Class of 2024, also shared their sorrow online, extending condolences to everyone who loved and was part of her life.
The Injury and Ongoing Investigation
On December 8, the Larimer County Coroner's Office released the first official findings about Kaylee's death. They confirmed the identity of the body and revealed she had died the night she went missing from cold exposure and blunt force trauma.
Investigators believe the trauma came from the crash that sent her vehicle into the canal, where it remained undetected for days. However, the Colorado State Patrol has not yet determined why Kaylee's car went off-road.
The vehicle is now being examined in the State Patrol evidence garage, where investigators are focusing on the brakes and internal computer system for answers. According to Sergeant Ivan Alvarado, they are working to reconstruct the crash that led to this tragedy in full.
"From there, we're going to be able to determine if speed was a factor, if weather was a factor, if brakes were a factor," he said.
