Michael Wright, Star of 'The Five Heartbeats' and 'Sugar Hill,' Dead at 70 — Family Reveals Unexpected Cause
Michael Wright, the actor whose commanding performances made him a familiar face across movies and television, has died at 70. His family has shared heartbreaking details about his final days — including a rare medical condition he had been living with for years.
Michael died Wednesday, August 19, in Los Angeles at the age of 70, according to his family. TMZ was among the first outlets to report his death after his family confirmed the news.
The actor was best known for playing Eddie King Jr., the talented but troubled lead singer at the center of the 1991 drama The Five Heartbeats, as well as Raynathan Skuggs in Sugar Hill.
A Career That Left a Mark
Michael's career stretched nearly five decades, beginning with his screen debut in the 1979 film The Wanderers. Four years later, he appeared in Robert Altman's Streamers, a performance that helped establish him as an actor to watch. He later played Victor Duncan in the 1987 comedy The Principal, starring alongside Jim Belushi and Louis Gossett Jr.
But for many fans, it was Eddie King Jr. who became Michael's defining role. In The Five Heartbeats, Michael portrayed a gifted singer whose personal struggles unfolded as the fictional R&B group navigated fame, friendship and the pressures of the music business.
His film credits also included Money Talks, Point Blank and The Interpreter, while his television work included appearances in Oz and V: The Series.

His Wife Shared a Heartbreaking Goodbye
Michael's wife, Susan Wright, announced his death in an emotional Instagram statement. In her post, Susan remembered Michael not simply as the actor audiences knew from his most famous roles, but as a husband, father, grandfather, friend and artist whose work reached generations.
"It is with profound sadness and an unimaginable heaviness in my heart that I share the passing of my beloved husband, Michael Wright." She went on to name the people Michael leaves behind, including his children and stepchildren, before reflecting on how differently he was known inside his own family.
"Many knew and loved him through The Five Heartbeats, The Wanderers, V, The Principal, Streamers, and the many other characters he brought to life throughout his remarkable career."
"His talent, presence, and contributions to film and television will live on, but to those of us who loved him personally, he was so much more than the roles the world knew him for," her post read on. Susan said the family was experiencing "an enormous and deeply personal loss" and asked the public and media to give them privacy while they grieve.
She also urged people not to spread unconfirmed information or speak on behalf of the family. "Michael, your work will live forever, but your love will live even longer in the hearts of those who knew you best. Rest peacefully, my love. You will be missed beyond words."

The Cause of Death Was More Complicated Than First Known
The details surrounding Michael's death became clearer after his family spoke with TMZ. According to the family, Michael suffered heart failure coupled with complications of Marchiafava-Bignami disease, a rare degenerative neurological condition.
The revelation is particularly striking because Michael had reportedly been diagnosed with the condition more than a decade earlier.
Michael Had Been Living With the Rare Disease Since 2015
According to NBC News, Michael was diagnosed with Marchiafava-Bignami disease, or MBD, in 2015. The outlet reported that he died at UCI Medical Center in California with Susan and his children by his side. His family said he died peacefully following complications from the disease and heart failure.
Marchiafava-Bignami disease is extraordinarily uncommon. According to the National Center for Biotechnology Information, it is a disorder involving demyelination and necrosis of the corpus callosum, the structure that connects the brain's two hemispheres.
The condition can have a wide range of neurological effects, and reported symptoms can include altered mental status, problems with speech and coordination, difficulty walking, seizures, and other neurological abnormalities.

The medical reference also notes that the exact cause of MBD remains unclear. It has been associated with alcohol-related neurotoxicity and deficiencies in B-complex vitamins, but cases have also been reported in people without alcohol use disorder and in connection with other medical conditions.
Now, as fans remember the actor, his family is asking that the focus remain on the man behind those performances — and on the people closest to him.
Michael is survived by Susan, his daughter, and his stepchildren. His family said additional information about his life, legacy and plans to honor him will be shared when they are ready.
RIP, Michael.
