Dave Bautista Lost 75 Pounds and Said He Looked 'Better Next to Other Actors' – But His Drastic Transformation Left Fans Concerned About How Thin He Looked
His imposing build helped define some of his biggest roles, but the wrestler-turned-actor eventually decided that being bigger was no longer working for him. His dramatic change caught plenty of attention, and readers can find before-and-after photos of his transformation at the end of the article.
Long before Dave Bautista became a familiar face on movie screens, his imposing physique was already part of his public image, with his WWE career showcasing his size and strength.
Hollywood later put that build to use in roles such as Drax, the formidable but gentle warrior from Marvel's "Guardians of the Galaxy" films. Yet after deliberately becoming even bigger for another part, Bautista reached a point where he wanted to head in the opposite direction.
The actor discussed that change during a September 2024 interview, revealing that he had lost 75 pounds over the course of several months.
The transformation followed a period in which he had deliberately gained considerable weight for his role in the 2023 psychological thriller "Knock at the Cabin." Bautista said:
"I started trimming down because I just got fat. I got really big for a role and it was uncomfortably big."
At his heaviest during that period, the former wrestler said he was approaching 315 pounds, and he made clear that the additional weight was not primarily muscle. Getting there had required him to gain weight quickly, something he later acknowledged he had taken further than necessary.
"Now looking back at it, I probably overdid it," he admitted. At the time, however, his attention had been on becoming as large as possible for the role. Bautista recalled eating large amounts of French fries and pancakes as he worked toward that goal.
"But at the time, I was just thinking, 'I gotta get big, I gotta get big,' and I put on an uncomfortable amount of weight," he explained. Taking the weight off proved to be a much slower process.
Bautista revealed that it took him "forever" to slim down after filming, but his perspective began to change as the pounds came off. The difference was not simply reflected on the scale — he found that carrying less weight affected how he felt and how he appeared alongside his co-stars.
"And then I noticed, the more I trimmed down, the better I felt," he shared. "I also noticed the more I trimmed down, the better I looked on camera, the better I looked next to other actors." That consideration mattered for someone whose naturally large frame already made him stand out. Bautista explained:
"I'm just a large human being. So at 6'4" and 240 pounds next to your typical actor, I look like a gorilla! And it's distracting!"
He was not necessarily finished losing weight, either. "So I'll probably lose like a few more pounds," he added. His leaner appearance, however, prompted a different conversation online.
Because audiences had become accustomed to seeing Bautista with a much heavier build, the dramatic change led some people to wonder whether something was wrong with his health.
One person said, "He looks sick so thin." Another commenter focused on how the weight loss had changed his overall appearance, typing, "noooooo now he look older.. loosing weight make every one look older. uggh maybe i just like big guys [sic]."
The concern became more explicit in another reaction, with one person wondering whether the transformation was for a movie role while also expressing hope that Bautista was healthy.
"He looks like he could be either prepping for a movie role...or the man is genuinely sick with an unknown disease (I hope not I wish that on no one) either way I seriously hope the man is doing well [sic]," the commenter said.
Others interpreted the slimmer physique through the lens of Bautista's career rather than his health. His years in professional wrestling had made his muscular frame an essential part of his image, but his growing acting career had given him opportunities well beyond the wrestling ring.
One person commented, "That looks like a guy that NEVER intends to ever wrestle again. Sad to see him go, but I'm happy he seems to be finding success."
Another netizen suggested that changing his physique could help separate his acting work from the physical image that had followed him from wrestling.
They shared, "Probably because he doesn't want to be cast strictly based on his physique. He's a very serious about wanting to showcase how great an actor he is [sic]. With diverse roles."
Bautista, meanwhile, described the weight loss as intentional and spoke openly about the effort required to maintain his slimmer frame. He revealed:
"I'm basically killing myself to be this trim. I mean, I am training hard."
His eating habits had changed as well. At the time of his 2024 interview, the "My Spy" star said he was limiting his daily calorie intake to around 2,500, an amount that was relatively low for someone of his size. "For me, it's like nothing," he joked. "I'm just not eating much. And I'm not starving or anything."
He had also incorporated intermittent fasting into his routine. During the interview, which took place around 1 p.m., Bautista said he had not yet eaten that day. He also explained that he generally stopped eating three to four hours before going to bed.
The result was a 75-pound transformation that looked especially dramatic because of the physique audiences had associated with him for years.
While the change led to concern and speculation online, Bautista's own explanation traced it back to the weight he had deliberately gained for "Knock at the Cabin" and his subsequent effort to bring it down.
For him, slimming down meant feeling better and changing how his frame translated on camera alongside other actors. Readers can see the before-and-after photos documenting his weight loss below.

Dave Bautista put his noticeably leaner physique on display as he arrived at the 97th Annual Academy Awards at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, California, on March 2, 2025. Wearing a sharply tailored navy tuxedo with a black bow tie, the former WWE star appeared significantly slimmer than the heavily muscled figure audiences had grown accustomed to seeing. The red carpet appearance came after Bautista had revealed that he had lost 75 pounds and explained that trimming down left him feeling better while also helping him look better on camera alongside other actors.

Several months later, Dave Bautista's slimmer build remained evident when he attended Marvel Studios' "The Fantastic Four: First Steps" at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion in Los Angeles, California, on July 21, 2025. The actor paired cream trousers with a fitted, striped double-breasted jacket, an open-collar white shirt, tinted glasses, and a flat cap. His appearance offered another look at the leaner physique he had maintained after losing 75 pounds, which he previously said left him feeling better and looking better on camera alongside other actors.
