The Hollywood star has credited his wife with changing how he viewed his health, his future, and even the value of his own life. Decades later, that impact reaches far beyond his physical transformation. See his partner and their family in the photos at the end of the article.

Ethan Suplee became a familiar face through a string of film and television roles, including Randy Hickey on "My Name Is Earl" and appearances in "Remember the Titans," "American History X," and "The Wolf of Wall Street."

For years, his size was also a recognizable part of his public image, but his appearance eventually changed dramatically after he lost a substantial amount of weight.

Away from acting, the actor built a family with his wife, Brandy Lewis, whom he had known long before they became husband and wife. The pair first met as teenagers and developed a close friendship, although their relationship was decidedly one-sided when it came to romance.

Suplee described them as "very, very, very close friends" and acknowledged that he had wanted their relationship to become something more. "I was utterly in love with her, and she was, like, not totally into me," he revealed.

Years passed before the two reconnected in 2001, and by then, something about their relationship was different for Suplee. He had spent much of his life hearing concerns about his weight and health, but said Lewis did not approach him that way. He explained:

"For the very first time, I wasn't getting a deep concern from somebody about my health and I felt totally accepted for who I was versus what I looked like. And that I think was kind of the bedrock that I was successful with my goals at."

After they began dating in 2002, his thoughts also turned toward experiences he wanted to share with her. Rather than focusing only on losing weight, he started thinking about activities his size prevented him from doing and the kind of future he wanted.

"Like spending a day walking around a museum or going on a trip or hiking that I just wasn't physically able to do," he shared. The Hollywood star's changing outlook also extended beyond his weight.

During a 2021 appearance on the "Inside of You" podcast, Suplee explained how little consideration he had previously given to his own future and how that shifted after Lewis entered his life again. "I don't want to say she saved my life. I didn't care about my life prior to her," he began.

Suplee, who said he was newly sober when they started seeing each other, described the relationship as the first time he began seriously thinking ahead.

"My life meant very little to me prior to her. And once I started seeing her — I was newly sober — I started seeing her [and] it was the very first time I started thinking about [the] future," he noted.

"And that was really how I clawed my way out of this pit [...], you know, looking up and seeing the light way up at the top, like, that there was life. Until then, I never thought about the future," the actor continued.

As his priorities changed, so did his approach to his health. Suplee eventually lost more than 250 pounds, a transformation he has directly connected to the future he began imagining with Lewis. Still, he has been careful not to equate a lower number on the scale with happiness itself. He admitted:

"I cannot say that actually losing weight has made me happier. I don't think that's true. I just think that achieving something I set out to achieve has given me this volume of happiness that is pretty great."

His relationship with Lewis continued alongside those changes. Four years after they began dating, the couple married in 2006. Suplee later returned to the effect she had on his outlook while celebrating her birthday in a 2021 Instagram post.

"Before I met my wife, the future wasn't something I ever thought about," he wrote. "I'm so glad that life is something I look forward to now, every single day. Happy birthday Brandy, I love you."

Their family also grew over the years. Lewis already had two daughters, Lily and Bella, from a previous relationship, while she and Suplee welcomed daughter Frances Clementine in 2005 and daughter Billie Grace in 2007. The couple later became grandparents to a baby girl.

By his 46th birthday in 2022, Suplee was reflecting publicly on a life he once said he had not expected to have. In an Instagram post marking the occasion, he wrote, "I really didn't think I'd make it out of the 90s, let alone to 46!"

He went on to celebrate the family around him, writing, "I'm married to the girl of my dreams. I have 4 amazing children who impress me everyday."

That birthday also coincided with a major family milestone, as one of their daughters graduated from college. Suplee noted that neither he nor Lewis had finished high school and expressed his pride in their children's accomplishments before turning his attention to the family's newest generation. He shared:

"We have the cutest granddaughter on earth and we weep with joy when we talk about her. Every second of my life feels like a miracle and I am so grateful for all of it."

What began as a close teenage friendship ultimately became a lasting marriage, while Ethan Suplee has repeatedly credited reconnecting with Lewis with changing the way he thought about his future.

Twenty years after they married, their family grew to include their four daughters and a granddaughter. Photos of Lewis and the family they built together can be seen below.
