By the time the cameras stopped flashing, several appearances had sparked conversations that went far beyond the red carpet.

Some Emmy appearances earn a quick compliment and disappear into the red-carpet shuffle. These were not those appearances, as viewers began scrutinizing everything from family resemblances to dresses, pants, and one especially emotional return. Once the reactions started pouring in, people definitely did not agree on what they were seeing.

Michael J. Fox Makes an Emotional Emmy Return

Long before the fashion debates took over social media, Michael J. Fox delivered one of the evening's most emotional moments.

The 65-year-old actor made his first Emmy Awards appearance in 13 years on September 14, 2026, when he received the Bob Hope Humanitarian Award during the ceremony hosted at Los Angeles' Peacock Theatre.

According to E! News, Fox entered the stage in a wheelchair before paying tribute to his wife, Tracy Pollan, and their children, Sam, 37, twins Aquinnah and Schuyler, 31, and Esmé. He thanked them "for their sacrifices, for their patience, and for their love."

"You have no idea," Fox added. The "Back to the Future" star also reflected on the period when he initially kept his Parkinson's diagnosis private.

"Initially, I kept my Parkinson's diagnosis a secret. I worried that it would affect my work and my relationships with audiences," he explained. "Would they laugh if they knew I was sick?" Instead, Fox said he was "stunned by support."

"Support from all of you who are so uplifting and just made me feel like I keep doing this," he said. "I hadn't lost what I do and you couldn't take it away from me. And it's because you stood up for me and I appreciate it [sic]."

Fox added, "Eventually, I understood that accepting Parkinson's didn't mean I had to surrender to it. It just meant doing what I could for everyone living with this disease." The appearance came during a particularly meaningful period in Fox's career.

His guest role on "Shrinking" as Gerry, a patient of Harrison Ford's Dr. Paul Rhoades who is also navigating Parkinson's disease, earned him an Emmy nomination. It additionally marked his first on-screen acting role since stepping away from acting in 2020.

Fox was diagnosed with Parkinson's in 1991 at age 29 and publicly disclosed his diagnosis seven years later.

He had previously explained that the disease complicated his ability to memorize dialogue, writing in a statement that his diminishing ability to remember and repeat words had become another signal that his relationship with acting was changing.

"There is a time for everything, and my time of putting in a twelve-hour workday, and memorizing seven pages of dialogue, is best behind me," he said, before leaving the door slightly open with: "At least for now…"

As Variety reported, Fox acknowledged several possible reasons for those difficulties, including age, cognitive effects of Parkinson's and other physical issues. Yet "Shrinking" eventually gave him a reason to return.

Fox told People that he contacted series Creator Bill Lawrence, with whom he had previously worked on "Spin City."

"I said, 'You did a show about Parkinson's, and you didn't call me?' And he said, 'Oh, you want to do it?' And I said, 'I'd love to do it,'" Fox recalled.

Lawrence then developed Gerry, a character whose relationship with Paul's Parkinson's journey ultimately allows the two men to help each other. For Fox, returning to a set under those circumstances was surprisingly freeing.

"It was the first time ever I get to show up on-set, and I didn't have to worry about am I too tired or coughing or anything," he explained. "I just do it. It was really good." That made seeing Fox at the Emmys alongside Pollan an especially poignant sight.

For the extravagant affair, Fox looked dapper in an all-black suit with a matching tie and sleek dress shoes, while his beloved wife stunned in a floor-length black gown with intricate bejeweled detailing by the collar and front. She left her curled blonde tresses falling loosely over her shoulders and back.

Once photos of the couple began circulating, viewers wasted no time expressing their opinions. In the comment section of a Facebook post about the duo's appearance, one person praised, "He looks very handsome."

On the other hand, Pollan's appearance attracted a very different kind of attention. One person did a double take, asserting, "That does not look like Tracy Pollan." A third echoed the confusion, "That does not look like Tracey unless she has had tons of work done."

Whatever the commenters thought, the images show Fox and Pollan sharing a major career night after decades together, with Fox's return to the Emmy stage carrying considerably more weight than a typical red-carpet appearance.

Mariska Hargitay Had More than Hosting Duties on Her Mind

Fox's emotional appearance came on a night that was already a major milestone for Mariska Hargitay. The "Law & Order: SVU" star hosted television's biggest night on September 14, becoming the first woman to host the ceremony in 15 years, after Jane Lynch did so in 2011, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Hargitay had announced in July that she would lead the 78th annual ceremony, although her first reaction to receiving the call was considerably less glamorous.

As she later recalled while discussing the Emmys hosting offer, she was backstage performing in "Every Brilliant Thing" when NBCUniversal Television Studios Chairman Pearlena Igbokwe contacted her.

"I was backstage, doing my play [Every Brilliant Thing], and I got a call. It was Pearlena [Igbokwe], who's head of the network, and I thought, 'Oh, I should answer this. Am I getting fired?'" Hargitay joked. "She asked me about it, and at first, I thought she was kidding. I actually thought she was kidding."

Ahead of the ceremony, Hargitay said she sought advice from plenty of people as she prepared for the enormous hosting job. Doing it during a year in which she was also nominated made the occasion even more meaningful.

She told People that hosting while receiving nominations was "more extraordinary than I have the words to express."

"I've always been so grateful to have dedicated my life to telling stories, and I feel more energized about the power of storytelling than ever before," she added. But Hargitay did not arrive at the ceremony alone.

In fact, her red-carpet entrance turned into a full-fledged family moment, with husband Peter Hermann and their children August, Andrew and Amaya joining her. And this is where the photos really began getting people talking.

Hargitay and Her Daughter's Matching Dresses Divided Viewers

Hargitay arrived at the Peacock Theater alongside Hermann and their three children, August, 20, Andrew, 14, and Amaya, 15. While the men of the family certainly looked handsome in their tuxedos and bow ties, it was the mother-daughter duo who immediately established the family's visual theme.

According to Page Six Style, the two wore nearly identical sparkling red Monse gowns, covered in sequins and feathers. Both finished their looks with strappy red heels and minimal accessories. There was also a sentimental meaning behind the coordination.

The brand confirmed that Hargitay and Amaya's looks paid homage to Hargitay's late mother, Jayne Mansfield.

The family later appeared together at the 78th Emmy Awards Governors Gala at the Los Angeles Convention Center, where Amaya remained in red while Hargitay had changed into a black-and-white look.

And while plenty of viewers loved seeing the entire Hermann-Hargitay family together, the matching red gowns proved surprisingly divisive. One commenter wrote alongside a Facebook reel, "Dress is a little too revealing for her daughter."

Meanwhile, another took the opposite view, gushing, "Love the matching dresses! Beautiful!" A third enthusiastically declared, "Those dresses are top notch [sic]!!! I would love one!!!"

Still, not everyone agreed. "Mom's covered up more then [sic] her daughter. Not a good fit for the daughter," another viewer opined. A fellow commenter said, "Beautiful family! But that dress is a bit inappropriate for her daughter...too much showing AND she doesn't look comfortable."

Elsewhere, reactions posted beneath another Facebook post showed just how divided people remained. "Perfect for the occasion!" boasted one fan.

However, someone else penned, "Seriously mom [sic]? She's 16!" while a fellow naysayer added, "She's too young to wear that kind of dress 😤." Yet the dresses were hardly the only thing viewers noticed.

Over on Reddit, Hargitay's sons also triggered plenty of chatter because some fans thought the family resemblance was almost impossible to miss. "She looks incredible. Crazy how you can look 40 forever when you're super rich. Her oldest son looks so much like her."

Another person praised, "What a beautiful family! That son took her whole face." A third gushed, "This might be her best look ever!! Literally so beautiful, the whole family!🥺🤩."

One commenter broke down the resemblance across all three children, writing, "Oldest son stole her entire face. Youngest son looks like dad and even daughter has Mariska head shape. Lol 😆 Lovely family [sic]!"

Whether viewers loved the matching concept or questioned it, the coordinated mother-daughter moment certainly accomplished one thing: it made the Hargitay family's Emmy photos difficult to scroll past.

Then Lisa Rinna and Harry Hamlin Arrived

If Hargitay's family had viewers debating one dress, Lisa Rinna and Harry Hamlin gave them an entirely different fashion puzzle.

Rinna stepped onto the Emmys carpet in a dramatic black gown with exaggerated sculptural detailing and a high slit, while Hamlin wore a black formal look with wide, noticeably loose-fitting pants.

But Hamlin's outfit continued dominating the discussion, with one commenter declaring, "Sorry, but he looks like he's wearing his grandfather's suit😝😝. He looks ridiculous!!!" The conversation carried over to Facebook, where another viewer wrote, "Harry's pants, one leg longer than the other,😳."

"What is with his tux???? 🤣🤣🤣" another asked. Not everybody was puzzled by his look, though. "Harry looks great! I love the glasses, haircut and trousers!" one supportive commenter wrote. Meanwhile, Rinna's gown inspired another miniature debate beneath a separate Facebook reel. "She's only got on half a dress lol!" one person joked. Another countered simply, "She's wearing deco mesh."

The wildly different reactions summed up the evening rather neatly. One person's questionable fit was another person's fashion moment, and Rinna and Hamlin certainly gave viewers something to dissect.

Between Fox's moving return, Hargitay's major hosting milestone and family night, and Rinna and Hamlin's conversation-starting fashion, the 2026 Emmys produced much more than acceptance speeches.
