Presley Gerber’s Family Never Stopped Believing He Would Be Okay — Inside the Family’s Heartbreak After His Death

Just days before everything changed, Cindy Crawford was talking about the future of her family — grown children, a quieter home, and even the possibility that she might someday become a grandmother. Nothing about those words sounded like a mother preparing to say goodbye to her son.
Presley Gerber’s struggles were never a secret, especially in his later years, when he began speaking about them with startling openness. But the final months also left behind a birthday message, a proud comment from his mother, an afternoon beside his parents, and a childhood story from his sister — small pieces of a life everyone expected to continue.
Looking back now means moving through those moments differently. At the time, they were simply reasons his family kept looking forward.

Ten Days Before Everything Changed
An interview published just 10 days before Presley’s death found Cindy thinking about a very different transition. She was talking about “empty nesting” and figuring out what motherhood becomes when the children who once needed you every day have lives of their own.
Cindy explained that when children become adults, parents eventually have to learn to step back. For her, that meant accepting that Presley and Kaia might make choices differently from the ones she would have made for them herself.
There was something deeply ordinary about the conversation, especially for any mother watching her children move further into adulthood. Cindy was not talking about endings — she was trying to imagine the next chapter.

She even admitted that she hoped to become a grandmother someday, although she did not think either of her children was anywhere close to giving her grandchildren yet. It was the kind of family milestone she simply assumed might still be waiting somewhere ahead.
That interview would read very differently only days later. Yet Cindy had other reasons to keep looking ahead because, earlier that year, Presley himself had been talking about trying to find his way back.
His journey had already included painful setbacks, and nobody around him appeared to believe a treatment could erase years of struggle. Still, when Presley wrote publicly about what he had just gone through, there were a few words his family could hold onto.

Then Came the Words They Wanted to Believe
In a March post, Presley described undergoing treatment and confronting things he had spent years running from. Then came the words that sounded like a fragile turning point: “I started finding my way back to myself.”
He did not pretend everything had suddenly been fixed. Presley said he was praying it would be the last time he needed to go through that kind of treatment, leaving uncertainty right beside the hope.
Cindy responded exactly as a proud mother might: “You are a warrior! Walked thru the fire to find yourself! So proud!” Kaia’s response was just as emotional: “That’s my brother I am so damn proud.”

Those comments now sit inside a story none of them knew was coming. At the time, they were simply a mother and sister celebrating someone they loved for continuing to try.
Presley was also beginning to do something more with what he had lived through. Instead of keeping the hardest parts hidden behind old modeling photos and a famous surname, he was talking about them where other people could hear.
That openness soon brought him into a room with his parents beside him. The photos from that day would later become some of the final public images of Presley with Cindy and Rande.

By Summer, the Picture Looked Different
On June 11, just 3 months before his death, Presley appeared with Cindy and Rande at a mental health-focused event in Malibu. The appearance would later become his final public outing with his parents.
The photos are especially tender now: Presley standing between Cindy and Rande, with his father close beside him. Yet he was not there merely as their son or as a former teenage model following his mother into an industry she knew so well.
Presley spoke for himself about mental health and the complicated years that had brought him there. He talked about finally reaching a place where being honest with himself made him feel free.

There was no polished promise that every difficult day was over. Presley instead spoke about small things that helped him — getting outside, moving his body, getting some sun, and being honest about what was happening inside him.
His parents had come to support him while he spoke. After spending years watching their son struggle, they were now watching him try to turn parts of that struggle into something other people might recognize in themselves.
Kaia had noticed the change too. She spoke about how much Presley’s willingness to be vulnerable meant to her, especially after the siblings had grown up inside a family that generally guarded its private life carefully.

But Nothing About This Road Stayed Simple
Their lives could look glossy from the outside — fashion events, campaigns, Malibu, and famous friends. Inside the family, however, Presley’s recovery had never followed a neat, straight line, and the people closest to him knew that better than anyone.
A recent profile of Kaia described what her brother had lived through as a “decade-long struggle with drug addiction.”That meant years of periods when things seemed calmer, followed by times when the worry returned.
Presley had also become unusually candid about mental health, addiction, and choices he regretted. He never presented himself as someone who had figured everything out, only as someone increasingly willing to admit when he had not.

For the people around him, that openness came with something they could still hold onto: Presley was willing to ask for help when things became difficult again. He had not simply disappeared from the problem or pretended it no longer existed.
That appears to have been happening once again in September. A person familiar with his final weeks said, “He seemed a little off in recent weeks. Energetically, he didn’t seem like himself.”
Those around him knew something was not quite right. But Presley reportedly entered treatment again — another attempt to get through a difficult period rather than surrender to it.
Saturday Gave Nothing Away
On the day Presley reportedly checked into treatment, Cindy’s public life continued in an almost painfully normal way. She shared a cheerful promotional reel, the sort of work-related post that might ordinarily have been forgotten within a few days.
The post does not mean Cindy believed everything was fine or did not know her son was struggling. What makes it so difficult to look at now is simply how ordinary the day still seemed while something serious was happening privately.
There was work to promote, plans still being made, and a son who had once again gone somewhere his family hoped could help him. Then Sunday came, and there would be no return to ordinary.

Presley died unexpectedly on September 20 at age 27 while at a rehabilitation facility. The place he had entered while seeking help became the place where his life ended.
An official cause of death had not yet been established as of September 22, and additional testing was required following the autopsy. Police were investigating the death as a suspected overdose, but a suspected overdose is not a confirmed cause of death.
For Cindy, Rande, and Kaia, there was suddenly no next treatment and no next good period waiting on the other side. Only then did people close to the family begin revealing how unprepared they had been for this to be the ending.

Then the Silence Broke
A source close to the family described what was happening behind closed doors after Presley’s death. “The family is in total shock right now. They are saddened beyond words,” the source says. “Kaia loved that Presley was so open about his struggles; his family was so proud that he was finding strength in helping others.”
Those words put the final months into a painful new light. His family had been watching someone they loved continue to try, while finding strength in speaking openly about what he had lived through.
Another source was equally clear about Cindy and Rande’s role in their son’s life: “This was never a situation involving two absent Hollywood parents,” the source says. “Cindy and Rande could not have been more supportive of Presley. They were always there for him and did everything they could to help him. The family has always been incredibly close, and Presley was deeply loved.”

The years had still been anything but simple. Better periods could be followed by harder ones, and the family had learned that feeling hopeful did not mean the struggle was over.
“It was very up and down,” the source says. “There were times when Presley was doing really well. A few years ago, he was working at the family restaurant in Malibu and seemed to be in a good place.”
That family restaurant was not the only piece of Malibu woven through Presley’s life. Long before treatments, public confessions, and mental health panels, Malibu was simply home to a boy who loved the ocean and a little sister who remembered following behind him.

Kaia Remembered Him Before Any of This
In an interview about a month before his death, Kaia recalled how her brother used to head out to surf before school. He would arrive afterward still in his wetsuit, barefoot, and carrying his surfboard.
It is such a small picture of him, but perhaps that is why it feels so vivid now. Before addiction became part of his public story, he was simply Kaia’s older brother walking into school straight from the ocean.
They grew up around many of the same children from preschool through graduation, while Cindy and Rande drove them to parties and returned later to pick them up. Behind the famous surname was a childhood filled with the same routines siblings often remember decades later.

Kaia followed her brother in quieter ways too. In another interview, she recalled reading books assigned to Presley at school, including Ray Bradbury and Of Mice and Men.
She also said their versions of shared childhood events could sometimes be “completely contradictory.” It is the kind of sibling disagreement that feels unremarkable until someone is no longer there to insist that his version was the right one.

By this summer, those childhood memories sat beside a very different version of Presley. He was 27, had already weathered years his family could never have imagined when he was a boy, and yet there was still a version of him Cindy could never quite stop seeing.

One July Line Now Hurts Differently
“I’m so proud of the man you’ve become,” Cindy wrote for Presley’s 27th birthday. Then came the line that reads very differently now: “I’ll always see you as my little boy!”
For the public, Presley’s image had changed many times — the child beside Cindy, the teenage model, the young man whose troubles made headlines, and later the adult trying to speak honestly about addiction and mental health.
For a mother, those versions do not necessarily replace each other. The 27-year-old son can still exist beside the child whose photographs have been sitting in family albums for decades.

His family knew recovery could move forward and backward. But that did not mean they had stopped imagining another birthday, another family photograph, or another better stretch after the difficult one.
They had seen those better periods before, which was why the hope remained even after years of uncertainty. No one close to him appears to have been preparing for the possibility that there would not be another one.
That hope is what makes the final words from someone close to the family land so differently now.

The Hope They Never Put Down
Only 10 days before Presley’s death, Cindy had still been talking about grandchildren and the future that might come with her children growing older. Her family story was still moving forward in her mind.
Then came the loss that turned those ordinary plans into something the Gerbers would never get to reach with Presley. The people closest to them say hope had remained part of the story right until the end.
“That is what makes this so heartbreaking,” the source adds. “His family never stopped supporting him, loving him and hoping that he would be okay.”
They believed this was another difficult chapter Presley was trying to make his way through. They did not know it would be the last one.
