Hilary Swank Welcomed Twins at 48 After Years of Waiting

In October 2022, the actress appeared on "Good Morning America" to share news about her family with husband Philip Schneider. With the audience listening, Swank opened up about a personal milestone she had kept private.

"This is something that I've been wanting for a long time and my next thing is I'm going to be a mom," she said. The audience erupted in applause, but Swank had another surprise to share. She was expecting "not just of one, but of two."

After the announcement, the actress expressed relief at finally being able to discuss such an important moment in her life. "It's so nice to be able to talk about it and share it," she said.

Shortly afterward, Swank appeared on "Live with Kelly and Ryan", where she discussed how the pregnancy had affected her daily routine.

Despite appearing on television early in the morning while adjusting to the time difference from the West Coast, she remained upbeat. "I'm feeling great right now," she said, adding that she was a little "cross-eyed" from the early start.

At the time, Swank was in her second trimester, but her colleagues on "Alaska Daily" had only recently learned about the pregnancy.

Keeping the news private had become difficult as her clothes stopped fitting. During filming, she recalled cutting open her jeans and covering them with a jacket.

The wardrobe change drew questions from a crew member because the jacket did not match what Swank had worn in earlier scenes. She tried to convince the crew member that the outfit would work, turning the situation into a lighthearted exchange.

Swank also shared a family connection that made the news especially interesting. Both she and Schneider had grandmothers who were twins.

Six months after her television announcement, the couple welcomed a boy and a girl. Swank was 48 at the time. On April 10, 2023, she shared the news on Instagram with a sunset photo overlooking the ocean.

Wearing a gray robe, Swank stood with her back to the camera, holding a newborn in each arm. She accompanied the photo with a message reflecting on the experience.

"It wasn't easy. But boy (and girl!) was it worth it," she wrote. The actress also wished her followers a happy Easter and described herself as "Posting from pure Heaven."

Swank Opened Up About the Joys and Challenges of Motherhood

By February 2024, Swank was raising her 10-month-old twins, Aya and Ohm, while balancing parenting with her professional commitments.

During an interview with Today, the then-49-year-old actress reflected on what life had been like since their arrival.

"It's double the love, double the joy, double the exhaustion," she said. The conversation also turned to the years before Swank met Schneider, whom she married in August 2018.

As she recalled that period of uncertainty, Swank described the decisions she had considered while hoping to start a family. "I needed to find the right person. I didn't know if I was going to find the right person. Was I going to do it on my own?" she said.

Her path to parenthood also included a difficult family chapter. Swank took a three-year break from her career to care for her father, who died in October 2021.

When she later learned she was expecting twins, their due date held special significance because it fell on her father's birthday. After years of waiting, Swank found that the reality of raising her children differed from what she had once imagined.

"I thought that it would be like this dream, but it's dreamier than I ever imagined. It blows open my whole world in the most beautiful way," she said.

At 49, Swank also considered how her outlook had changed over time. She said growing older had helped her let go of rigid expectations and appreciate experiences as they unfolded.

That perspective carried into her daily life with Aya and Ohm. Rather than assuming she always knew what they needed, she tried to remain present and pay close attention to them.

Her approach also reflected lessons from her childhood in Washington State. Swank recalled how her parents encouraged hard work and treated people with kindness, values she hoped to pass on to her children.

As she adjusted to motherhood, she became increasingly interested in the products she used for her twins.

While researching diapers, Swank discovered HealthyBaby, a company focused on baby products and ingredient transparency. Her interest eventually led her to become the brand's first chief innovation officer.

Explaining why the issue mattered to her, Swank connected her research to the responsibilities she felt as a parent. "When you're having a child, you need to make sure that you're using products that are non-toxic," she said.

HealthyBaby founder Shazi Visram welcomed her involvement, praising Swank's ideas and interest in improving maternal health.

Toward the end of her Today interview, Swank was asked what she found most difficult about raising her twins. Her answer reflected the responsibility she felt toward her children. "Just making sure that you're giving them the best start," she said.

Hilary Swank Celebrates California's New Diaper Transparency Law

Swank's work with HealthyBaby later extended beyond choosing products for her own children.

On October 7, 2026, she shared an Instagram post celebrating the signing of California Assembly Bill 1901, which requires diaper manufacturers to disclose ingredients used in their products.

The first image featured a throwback photo of Swank during her pregnancy with twins Aya and Ohm. She stood in a kitchen wearing a black outfit and a gray cardigan, proudly showing her baby bump. Text over the image explained how becoming a mother had prompted her to question what went into the products her children used.

The actress introduced the legislative development with an upbeat message. "I think we could all use some good news, and I have some to share!" she wrote.

Swank credited HealthyBaby, the Environmental Working Group, and other advocates for supporting the measure, which aims to give parents more information about diaper ingredients.

The legislation had drawn attention before its passage. In an August 15 report by ABC7, Assemblyman Marc Berman explained why he introduced the bill. "Parents deserve better than a guessing game," Berman said.

According to the report, Consumer Reports examined 31 diaper products and found that seven provided little or no ingredient information.

The report also discussed concerns about chemicals found in some diaper materials, while noting that no immediate health risk had been proven at the levels detected in diapers available at the time.

Swank's Instagram carousel included images of fellow advocates and information about the campaign, highlighting the effort behind the legislation.

She ended her announcement by looking ahead to what the law could mean for families. "We're one step closer to making transparency the standard, and I think that's worth celebrating," she wrote.
