Kim Novak's Appearance: What AI Imagines She Might Look Like Today as Plastic Surgeons Weigh In — Photos
Kim Novak's appearance has drawn renewed attention, from her controversial 2014 Oscars appearance to her 92-year-old return to Venice. As plastic surgeons offer their opinions, AI-generated images imagine the Hollywood legend in glamorous looks today.
Kim Novak became one of Hollywood's most recognizable leading ladies in the 1950s, starring in films that would later become classics. Decades after leaving the spotlight, the actress continues to attract attention for her career, her outspoken views on beauty and authenticity, and changes in her appearance that have prompted public debate.
Born Marilyn Pauline Novak in Chicago on February 13, 1933, Kim grew up in a family with a background in education. Her father worked as a transit clerk, and her early life was far removed from the glamour of the film industry.

Kim Novak's Journey From a Shy Chicago Girl to a Hollywood Star
According to her IMDb biography, Novak initially pursued modeling before finding opportunities in entertainment. She appeared as an uncredited extra in The French Line in 1953, eventually catching the attention of Columbia Pictures.
The studio wanted to shape the young actress into a major star, but even her name became a point of negotiation. Novak wanted to keep her surname, while studio executives sought a name they considered more suitable for Hollywood.
The compromise was Kim Novak. Her early roles included Pushover and Phffft in 1954, followed by 5 Against the House, Picnic, and The Man with the Golden Arm in 1955.

She continued building her reputation with films such as Pal Joey in 1957 and Vertigo and Bell, Book and Candle in 1958. Although the studio promoted Novak as a glamorous screen presence, she later described feeling uncomfortable with the pressure to conform to other people's expectations. Her independence would become a defining part of her story.

The Hollywood Romance That Challenged Studio Expectations
During her rise to fame, Novak became romantically involved with singer and actor Sammy Davis Jr. Their relationship attracted attention at a time when interracial relationships faced intense public prejudice.
The romance also created concerns within the Hollywood establishment. Novak's growing fame made her personal life a matter of public interest, and the relationship challenged the image studio executives wanted to maintain for her.
Novak later spoke warmly about another major star she knew, Frank Sinatra, describing a side of him that she believed was often hidden by his celebrity status. "The real Sinatra was a very sensitive person. But he was affected by people putting him on a pedestal, so he let that simple, beautiful side of him go."
She also admired James Stewart, her co-star in Alfred Hitchcock's Vertigo. The 1958 thriller would eventually become one of the most celebrated films of her career, though its reputation grew considerably over time.

Novak's resistance to being controlled extended beyond her relationships. She also challenged the unequal treatment of women in Hollywood, including differences in pay between female performers and their male co-stars.
Novak also spoke about the importance of independence and self-expression. In an interview with KQED, she offered advice that reflected her own experience: "I would just say hold out for what you believe in, and don’t be afraid to express yourself."

She continued, "Don't let people try to change you, because in the long run, if you keep trying to do what everyone else thinks is right, it's not. You've got to do what you believe. Shakespeare was so right: 'This above all, to thine own self be true.'"
The actress's willingness to defend her independence came at a cost. She eventually concluded that the pressure of Hollywood was taking too much of a toll on her.

Kim Novak Walked Away From Hollywood
Novak continued acting into the 1960s, appearing in films including Of Human Bondage in 1964 and The Legend of Lylah Clare in 1968. She later starred in The Great Bank Robbery in 1969, The Third Girl from the Left in 1973, and Just a Gigolo in 1978.
Her personal life also changed. After a brief marriage to actor Richard Johnson from 1965 to 1966, Novak met Robert Malloy, an equine veterinarian, in 1974. They married in 1976 and built a life that allowed her to spend more time with animals and her artistic interests.

She gradually withdrew from the film industry, with Liebestraum in 1991 marking her final feature-film appearance. Rather than continuing to pursue Hollywood roles, she chose a quieter life in Oregon, where she and Malloy raised horses and llamas.
In an interview with The Guardian, Novak explained why leaving the industry had felt necessary. "I thought: 'I'm much too vulnerable for this town. I take things to heart too much.'"
Art became central to her life. Novak painted regularly, exhibited her work, and explored photography, poetry, riding, and canoeing. She later described painting as something that had helped her through difficult periods.

Novak also spoke publicly about living with bipolar disorder, which she believed she inherited from her father. She discussed painful experiences from her youth and the emotional challenges she faced, explaining how those experiences shaped her sensitivity and her decision to step away from the pressures of fame.
Her husband remained an important source of companionship for decades. After Malloy died in 2020, Novak continued living in Oregon, where she found comfort in her artwork and memories of their life together.
In the interview, she reflected on her creative routine and the loss of her husband. "I paint at least eight hours a day," she said, describing art as a way of communicating feelings that were difficult to express otherwise.

Kim Novak's Academy Awards Appearance Sparked Debate About Her Face
Although Novak had largely stayed away from Hollywood, she returned to the public eye at the 86th Academy Awards, where she appeared alongside actor Matthew McConaughey to present an award.
Her appearance quickly became a talking point online. Some viewers commented on how different her face looked compared with photographs from her younger years, while others criticized her appearance in ways that Novak later described as hurtful.
Donald Trump was among those who commented publicly, tweeting, "Kim should sue her plastic surgeon!" Novak later acknowledged having fat injections in her cheeks and regretted the decision.

In her interview with The Guardian, she explained, "That was the stupidest thing I could have done. First of all, I didn't need it, because I think my face is too round anyway. But it filled out my cheeks so I looked different."
She also described the physical condition she was in that evening. "I took a Valium on an empty stomach, because I was trying to starve myself to lose a couple of pounds. I was just like 'arhhhhhhhhhh' – I had no energy."
The reaction to her appearance stayed with Novak long after the ceremony. She later explained that she returned to the public conversation partly because she wanted to challenge the culture of online bullying.

"I didn't want them to think they had got the best of me and that what they had said was going to take me down, so I went and talked about bullies in the interview." Novak also wanted to highlight the potential consequences of public cruelty. "There are kids who have taken their lives over what has been said about them. I felt I wanted to help be a role model."
Her experience helped explain why she has continued to speak against the pressure placed on women to maintain a particular appearance, especially as they grow older.

Kim Novak Returns to Venice at 92 — and Fans Celebrate Her Appearance
More than a decade after the Oscars controversy, Novak made a rare public appearance at the 82nd Venice International Film Festival on August 28, 2025. At 92, she arrived to receive the festival's Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement, with photographers capturing her as she greeted the crowd.
The appearance marked a significant return to a major film event. Her last major public appearance had been at the Toronto International Film Festival about a decade earlier.
Novak's visit coincided with the premiere of the documentary Kim Novak's Vertigo, which revisits her career and her experience making Hitchcock's psychological thriller. The film has become increasingly celebrated over the years, with the British Film Institute naming Vertigo the greatest film of all time in its 2012 critics' poll.

Speaking to The Guardian in August 2025, Novak reflected on the recognition. "It's incredible to feel appreciated and to receive this gift before the end of my life," she said. "I think I'm being honoured as much for being authentic as for my acting. It has sort of come full circle."
She also discussed the character she played in Vertigo, in which she portrayed both Madeleine Elster and Judy Barton. The role has remained a major part of her legacy, and Novak has spoken about identifying with the character's struggle to remain herself under someone else's expectations.
The actress also used the opportunity to discuss the pressures women face over their looks, particularly in an era when social media and artificial intelligence can produce convincing but unrealistic images.
"We make progress, but unfortunately then we always go back," Novak said. "It inevitably always goes back to sex appeal. It still matters too much how we look. Social media and AI are able to show all kinds of stuff that isn’t real. They're today's bad directors, trying to remake women."

Novak's Venice appearance also prompted a wave of positive reactions from fans who were pleased to see the Hollywood legend return to a major event. One commenter wrote, "92? Absolutely fantastic! Much respect!" Another praised her enduring features, saying, "Those high cheekbones and beautiful smile are unforgettable."
A third commenter celebrated her style and legacy, writing, "I like older people who still look good are just as stylish as they were when they were young. THISSSS is a HOLLYWOOD LEGEND. That's how they used to do back in the Golden Age of Halloween 😌"
The reactions offered a contrast to the criticism that followed her 2014 Oscars appearance, with many viewers focusing on her longevity, style, and place in Hollywood history.

Plastic Surgeons Weigh In on Kim Novak's Changing Appearance
Novak's 86th Academy Awards appearance has been examined by plastic surgeons who have offered opinions about the possible reasons her face looked different from earlier photographs. Their assessments are based on images and public information, however, and should not be treated as confirmation that she underwent particular procedures.
In a TikTok video, a plastic surgeon discussed the questions surrounding Novak's appearance. The doctor acknowledged that Novak had spoken about fat grafting but suggested that other procedures might have been involved. "And I always preface this: 'I'm not picking on Kim Novak, but she's definitely had more surgery than just fat grafting.'"

The surgeon speculated about a possible facelift, midface lift, brow lift, and rhinoplasty, while also discussing the fullness of Novak's cheeks and changes in her nose. These were the doctor's interpretations of her appearance, not verified details of her medical history.
Other surgeons have offered their own assessments. In commentary published in a plastic-surgery article, Beverly Hills Plastic Surgeon Brent Moelleken expressed concern about what he believed might have contributed to the changes in Novak's face. "It's sad. Ms. Novak has apparently had silicone injections or overaggressive fat injections to her face," Moelleken said.
He also explained his broader view of cosmetic procedures and aging. "Most Hollywood ladies who 'age gracefully' actually do so with subtle plastic surgery that keeps them looking younger and 'refreshed.' If they try too hard to look much younger than their age, they will have a bad result."

Moelleken added, "Hopefully she was just overzealous with those, and didn't have fillers like silicone or ArteFill, which never go away, unfortunately."
Triple Board Certified Plastic Surgeon Adam Schaffner offered another possible explanation, noting that the timing and amount of any injections could affect a person's appearance. "It depends on the volume of the fillers. It could definitely be swelling if it's a recent injection," he said.
Schaffner also commented on the shape of Novak's chin. "There's a lot of different thing[s] she could have done," Adam added. "The angulation of her chin, the size of her chin, is notable[sic] different. I would suspect that she's had some sort of chin treatment."

Board Certified Beverly Hills Plastic Surgeon Dr. William Bruno, meanwhile, compared photographs of Novak from her earlier career with images taken at the 2014 ceremony. His commentary focused on what he perceived as changes to her cheeks, chin, and overall facial proportions.
"In her heyday, in Alfred Hitchcock films, 81-year-old actress Kim Novak was a great beauty. While it is not fair to compare an 81-year-old woman to look as she did in her 20s or 30s, Kim Novak’s face at the Oscars bears no resemblance to the face of her youth."

"Her younger face was dainty and feminine. She had a small pointy chin, defined cheekbones, and a Cupid’s bow mouth," he added. "Ms. Novak's face at the Oscars looked masculine and overinflated. It appears as if she had a facelift at some point, which widened the shape of her upper face."
"In addition, it is abundantly clear that too much filler has been used in her checks [sic]. Filler has also been used in her nasolabial folds, but the result has been uneven. The filler did its job on the left side, but there remains a distinct crease on the right."

Kim Novak and Terri Piño leave the Hotel Excelsior during the 82nd Venice International Film Festival on September 2, 2025. Novak wears a dark outfit with a patterned scarf draped over her shoulders as the pair walk together. | Source: Getty Images
He concluded his analysis by saying:
"What is most striking is her chin. It does appear as if she had a chin implant, which seems to be the only way to explain how she morphed from a dainty feminine chin to the masculine chin she has today. Alfred Hitchock [sic] must be rolling in his grave!"
The assessments vary, and none independently establishes which procedures Novak may or may not have undergone. Differences between photographs can also reflect natural aging, makeup, lighting, camera angles, hairstyles, and image quality.
Novak has publicly acknowledged fat injections in her cheeks, but speculation about other treatments remains just that: speculation. Her own comments about beauty and authenticity also underline the importance of separating confirmed information from conclusions drawn from photographs.
