What began as a Saturday afternoon of youth soccer and family time turned into a heartbreaking day for a Kansas community, leaving two people dead and 10 others injured. As investigators worked to understand the circumstances surrounding the tragedy, a development involving the driver raised further questions about what happened at the sports complex.

On October 17, families gathered at Stryker Sports Complex in northeast Wichita, Kansas, to watch children compete in soccer games and spend time together. The facility, which features multiple outdoor turf fields and an indoor field, regularly welcomes young athletes, coaches, and spectators from across the region.

A Saturday Soccer Game Takes a Heartbreaking Turn

At approximately 3:25 p.m., emergency calls began coming into Sedgwick County 911 reporting that a pickup truck had driven onto a soccer field and struck several people. Police and emergency personnel rushed to the scene, where they began assisting those affected.

The incident claimed the lives of 6-year-old Adrian Cole and 35-year-old Nicholas Schafer, both from McPherson, Kansas, about an hour north of Wichita. Authorities confirmed that the victims were not related.

Ten other people were injured, including five children between the ages of 5 and 9. The injured adults ranged in age from 28 to 68, while a 61-year-old woman was also taken to a hospital after experiencing medical complications unrelated to traumatic injuries.

The Community Begins to Grieve as Details Emerge

News of the tragedy quickly spread beyond the sports complex, prompting an outpouring of sympathy from local organizations and officials. The McPherson City FC competitive youth soccer club, which was connected to the community where both victims lived, shared a message on Facebook acknowledging the devastating loss.

"Today our club suffered an unimaginable tragedy at Stryker Soccer Complex. We ask that you keep all those involved in your thoughts and prayers. Dealing with a loss of this magnitude also calls for privacy and respect for all our soccer community."

"Please allow time for healing and grieving to take place and be there for those that seek guidance. We will post further information in regards to the club and future scheduled events, as it becomes available. Please hold your loved ones tight tonight," the statement continued.

The club's message also urged families to give those affected the space and time they needed to grieve. Its appeal reflected the wider community's struggle to process an incident that had transformed an ordinary day of children's sports into a devastating loss.

Wichita Police Chief Joe Sullivan also expressed his condolences to the families of Adrian and Nicholas and to everyone who witnessed the incident. "What should have been a day of children playing soccer and families spending time together ended in tragedy," Sullivan said in a statement released by the Wichita Police Department.

Sporting Events Are Halted as the Tragedy Sends Shock Waves Through Wichita

The incident affected more than the soccer families gathered at the complex that afternoon. The Kansas State High School Activities Association was holding its inaugural girls' flag football state championship at a nearby field, and the emergency brought the competition to an abrupt halt.

The third-place game between Shawnee Mission West and Shawnee Mission South was stopped at halftime, with Shawnee Mission West leading 24-6. The championship game between St. Thomas Aquinas and St. James Academy had not yet begun.

Both remaining games were suspended, with the association announcing that details about rescheduling would be provided later. In its official statement, the Kansas State High School Activities Association said it extended its condolences to the families and teams affected by the incident.

Stryker Sports Complex also announced that all events had been canceled until further notice and asked the public to stay away while emergency personnel carried out their work. The facility subsequently announced that it would resume normal operations on Monday, October 19.

The decision to suspend the sporting events underscored the scale of the emergency and its impact on the many families who had come to the complex for a day of competition.

Investigators Turn Their Attention to the Driver

As police began piecing together the circumstances, their preliminary findings identified the vehicle involved as a Chevrolet pickup driven by a 34-year-old woman from Garden City, Kansas.

According to investigators, the truck had been parked in a space near the soccer fields before it drove onto one of the fields, striking children and adults. Two of the woman's children were inside the vehicle at the time, while another child was playing soccer elsewhere at the complex.

More than 30 witnesses were interviewed as investigators worked to establish what led to the incident. The two children who had been inside the pickup were among those interviewed.

A report by the New York Post also recounted an emotional moment following the crash. According to a reporter who spoke at a Saturday press conference, the woman shouted, "Oh my God, Oh my God, what have I done?!" as other parents pulled her from the vehicle.

Authorities have not publicly established what caused the pickup to drive onto the field, and the investigation remained active.

A Family's Loss Prompts an Outpouring of Support

As the investigation continued, another account of the tragedy highlighted the personal toll on Nicholas Schafer's family. A GoFundMe fundraiser organized by Mac Wrestling Club described the effort to support the Schafer family following Nicholas' death.

The fundraiser said his wife, Ashley, and their two daughters and grandparents were also affected by the incident, with family members injured. The club explained that Nicholas and Ashley's son, Bentley, had been part of its wrestling community for five years.

During that time, Bentley had earned a place on the D3 District Duals team and become a state placer during the previous season. The fundraiser described the family as an important part of the club and appealed to fellow wrestlers, friends, and community members to help them navigate the emotional and financial challenges ahead.
