Michael Strahan Shares Throwback and Recent Photos of Twin Daughters Isabella and Sophia on Their 22nd Birthday — Photos
Michael Strahan's twin daughters have stunned fans with their remarkable transformation in a series of birthday photographs, but behind the happy family snapshots lies a harrowing ordeal that nearly cost one of the sisters her life.
The "Good Morning America" co-anchor celebrated Isabella and Sophia's 22nd birthday by sharing adorable childhood throwbacks alongside recent pictures of the young women, prompting an outpouring of affection from followers.
Yet the smiling photographs tell only part of the story. Just three years earlier, Isabella had been rushed into emergency brain surgery after doctors discovered a malignant tumor the size of a golf ball.
What followed was a grueling fight for survival that left her unable to walk, robbed her of her signature curls, and forced her father to confront his worst nightmare.
Now, as the sisters celebrate another milestone together, their transformation carries a meaning far deeper than their striking new appearances.

But growing up as Michael's daughters had also meant experiencing a childhood that was anything but ordinary.

From the White House to Muddy Fields, the Twins Had an Unusual Childhood
"The twins live a crazy life," Michael told People in 2016. He recalled how the girls once flew to Washington, D.C., to interview the first lady for "Good Morning America."
By the following day, however, their glamorous experience had given way to something entirely different. Their mother sent Michael a video of the sisters riding horses and splashing through a muddy cornfield.
Isabella also spent her childhood dividing her time between North Carolina and North Dakota, experiencing a world far removed from the television studios associated with her famous father.
As the years passed, both sisters graduated from high school and prepared to begin their own lives. Isabella enrolled at the University of Southern California, where she planned to study communications and enjoy the independence of college.
But just as she was settling into freshman life, she began experiencing a strange symptom that would lead to a devastating discovery.
It Began With a Strange Change in the Way Isabella Walked
In September 2023, 18-year-old Isabella noticed that something was wrong with her balance. Instead of walking normally, she found herself moving in a bizarre zigzag pattern. She was also suffering from extreme headaches.
Initially, she believed she might have vertigo. But her symptoms persisted, and soon her condition became far more frightening. Nausea set in, followed by vomiting blood.
Alarmed by her deteriorating health, Sophia urged her twin to go to the emergency room, while Michael also insisted that she see a doctor. An MRI revealed something no one in the family had anticipated.
"We did an MRI, and [the doctor] said, 'Go straight to the emergency room.' I didn't know what was wrong, but everyone else did," Isabella later recalled. Doctors had discovered a mass behind her brain measuring approximately the size of a golf ball.
Isabella was diagnosed with medulloblastoma, a malignant brain tumor that develops in the cerebellum, the part of the brain responsible for movement and coordination.
The disease typically affects children between five and nine years old. Isabella was 18, and her condition was so serious that doctors had to act almost immediately.
Doctors Rushed Isabella Into Surgery Just Before Her 19th Birthday
On October 27, 2023, Isabella underwent emergency surgery to remove the tumor. Her 19th birthday was the following day.
Instead of celebrating the milestone with friends at college, she was beginning a terrifying medical journey that would involve rehabilitation, radiation, chemotherapy, and further brain surgeries.

The full extent of the danger later emerged in the ABC special "Life Interrupted: Isabella Strahan's Fight to Beat Cancer." Dr. Michelle Israel, an internal medicine specialist and one of Isabella's doctors, revealed just how serious the situation had become.
"She was actually in danger of having a seizure, having a stroke, and potentially dying," Israel said. For Michael, the diagnosis was almost impossible to comprehend.
"As a parent, you're scared. Oh my, you're just scared," he admitted in the special. Cancer had not crossed the family's minds when Isabella first developed symptoms, and there was no family history that had prepared them for the devastating news.
Although surgeons successfully removed the tumor, the operation was only the beginning of Isabella's ordeal. When she emerged from surgery, the college freshman faced a challenge most people never imagine having to confront. She had to learn how to walk again.

Isabella Faced an Agonizing Recovery as Her Twin Stood Beside Her
Following the operation, Isabella underwent rehabilitation, working with medical professionals to regain her mobility. Sophia remained close to her sister throughout the difficult process, offering support as Isabella struggled to recover from brain surgery.

The teenager later admitted that her memories of the period immediately after the operation were hazy. Michael remembered watching his daughter endure significant pain and spend long stretches sleeping.
Friends visited Isabella in the hospital, sometimes simply sitting beside her as she rested. Eventually, she regained her ability to walk, marking an important victory in her recovery. But the relief was overshadowed by the next stage of treatment.

Isabella underwent several rounds of radiation, which caused side effects including hair loss. In February 2024, she began chemotherapy, forcing her to endure yet another physically and emotionally draining chapter.
And for Michael, watching his daughter suffer brought a particularly painful realization: There was nothing he could do to make the cancer disappear.
Michael Admitted He Was Powerless to Take His Daughter's Pain Away
There were moments during chemotherapy when Isabella told her father she didn't think she could continue. Michael could encourage her, comfort her, and remain by her side. But he could not endure the treatment for her.

"You're so used to, as a parent, fixing things, taking care of things, especially something that hurts your child, and here you can't do anything, you're at the mercy of doctors and medicine," he said during a family interview.
As Isabella underwent chemotherapy, radiation, and multiple brain surgeries, she decided to share her experience with the public. Through YouTube vlogs filmed during treatment at Duke University's Preston Robert Tisch Brain Tumor Center, she documented the harsh realities of fighting cancer.

Her videos captured the medical procedures, but also the exhaustion, boredom, uncertainty, and endless waiting that consumed her days. By May 2024, however, Isabella finally had something to look forward to.
After months of exhausting treatment, only one chemotherapy session remained. Yet the prospect of reaching the finish line brought an unexpected fear.
As Chemotherapy Neared Its End, Isabella Feared What Would Come Next
In a May 2024 video update, Isabella filmed herself lying on a couch after returning home. She told followers she was "doing good," feeling better, and experiencing relatively little pain.
But the treatment had taken its toll. She revealed that she had slept for 18 hours and was growing bored while recovering at home. Isabella was excited about Sophia returning that week, and even more relieved that she had only one round of chemotherapy left.
Still, the approaching end of treatment left her questioning how she would adjust to ordinary life. For months, her existence had revolved around hospital appointments, procedures, and the next stage of treatment. Now she was struggling to imagine a future without that constant routine.
"I'm kind of scared, like once I'm done, how am I gonna go back to normal life? Cause I feel like there's always going to be another treatment or something I have to do, I don't know... but that's a later problem, and otherwise I'm doing good," she confessed.
Her fears were understandable after everything she had endured. But in June 2024, the moment she had spent months fighting toward finally arrived.
A Hospital Hallway Erupted in Cheers as Isabella Reached a Major Milestone
Isabella documented her final chemotherapy session in June 2024, sharing an emotional glimpse of the milestone with her followers. Wearing pink-and-white striped pajamas, she rested in a hospital bed while connected to medical equipment.
Fortunately, the final treatment had not been particularly difficult, and she spent much of it sleeping. "This is a long journey, but I made it," Isabella said. After chemotherapy ended and she received fluids, the atmosphere changed dramatically.
Dressed in black, Isabella walked through a hospital hallway decorated with handmade signs as music played and confetti filled the air. Nurses, friends, and relatives cheered as she made her way through the celebration.
Michael was there, along with Sophia, his partner Kayla Quick, and other loved ones. At the end of the hallway waited the hospital bell, which Isabella would ring to mark the completion of chemotherapy.
"We're going to go ring the bell now," she announced. "My confetti parade is really fun, and I love all my nurses... It's a great day." She rang the bell as those around her celebrated the enormous milestone.
Michael later shared his pride with followers. "@isabellastrahan you are a SUPERWOMAN! Ringing that bell finishing chemo and on your way! 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾," he wrote on Instagram.
But despite the emotional celebration, finishing chemotherapy did not yet mean Isabella was cancer-free. There was still one crucial result the family was waiting to hear.

The Scan That Would Reveal Whether Isabella's Cancer Was Gone
Isabella later explained that completing chemotherapy and ringing the hospital bell did not necessarily mean a patient had beaten cancer.
"I think people sometimes confuse ringing the bell with like being cancer-free," she said on "Good Morning America". "Sometimes it's not the case for everyone."
Although her treatment had ended, Isabella still needed a scan to determine whether the cancer remained. Weeks later, she filmed another update from inside a car, wearing a white tank top and sporting bright red nails.
This time, she had the news everyone had been hoping for. "It was a great, great scan. Everything was clear, cancer-free, and everything is great," Isabella revealed. She made an "OK" gesture as she shared the life-changing result.
In July 2024, doctors officially declared Isabella cancer-free. After emergency surgery, additional brain operations, rehabilitation, radiation, and chemotherapy, the young woman finally had a clear scan.
But the moment also brought an emotion she hadn't expected. After spending so much time with the medical professionals who had cared for her, Isabella found herself feeling sad about leaving them behind.
"I miss my doctors already and everyone who's helped me because they're all so nice. Like I feel like I'm just saddened today knowing that I wasn't going to be going back for a while, cuz I love them so much," she admitted.
For the first time in months, Isabella could begin looking beyond hospital rooms and treatment schedules. But returning to the life she had left behind would bring its own challenges.
Isabella Returned to College, but the Fear of Cancer Hadn't Disappeared
In August 2024, just one month after receiving her clear scan, Isabella returned to the University of Southern California. "It feels amazing," she later said on "GMA."
After months spent fighting cancer, she was finally attending classes again, meeting people her own age, and enjoying the experiences she had missed.

She also joined a sorority, saying that making new friends helped her feel as though she was having a normal college experience again. But her return to campus did not mean the medical uncertainty was over.
Doctors planned to monitor Isabella with scans every three months for the next two to three years, eventually reducing the frequency to every six months or annually.
She was also working to regain weight, rebuild her strength, improve her balance, and establish a routine. For Michael, the thought of future scans remained deeply unsettling, even after his daughter's encouraging results.
"There will not be a time where she's getting a scan where I won't be on pins and needles. I don't care if it's 10 years, 20 years, 30 years from now, you'll always be nervous. And I could tell she feels it too," he admitted.

Nevertheless, the family had received reassuring news from Isabella's medical team. "Her doctors feel very confident; she's going to be fine," Michael told People.
As Isabella gradually reclaimed her independence, another part of the family's ordeal came into focus. While she had been fighting cancer, Sophia had been trying to navigate college life without her twin.

Sophia Revealed the Pain of Watching Her Twin Miss Out on College Life
While Isabella remained home undergoing treatment, Sophia returned to school, surrounded by roommates and friends who could continue enjoying ordinary college experiences. They could go out, socialize, and make memories.
Her sister could not. Sophia later reflected on how difficult it had been to imagine what Isabella was experiencing as everyone else's lives continued moving forward.

As a freshman with her own social circle, she knew how much her twin was missing. When Isabella expressed feeling disconnected from normal life, Sophia tried to bring pieces of the outside world to her.
She shared updates about friends and the latest college drama, helping Isabella feel connected to something beyond hospital visits and cancer treatment. But Sophia's support went far deeper than those everyday conversations.

She had urged Isabella to seek medical attention when her symptoms became serious, supported her through rehabilitation, and stood beside her when she celebrated completing chemotherapy.
And on January 22, 2025, when the family gathered for a television interview about the previous year, Sophia was once again beside her sister. By then, Isabella had begun reflecting on the frightening warning signs that had changed her life.
Isabella Reflected on the Warning Signs She Wished She Had Recognized Sooner
The family interview came ahead of the February 2025 release of the ABC special "Life Interrupted: Isabella Strahan's Fight to Beat Cancer."
Looking back on her diagnosis, Isabella said the ordeal had taught her the importance of listening to her body and speaking up when something felt wrong.
"I learned how you should advocate for yourself. I think the whole journey has taught me that," she explained on "GMA." She acknowledged that she wished she had recognized earlier that her symptoms were a sign of something serious.
Although she had been declared cancer-free, Isabella understood that the future could never be entirely predictable. But she was determined not to let fear control her life.

"Obviously you can't predict what will happen, and that's a little scary. But I don't think you can solely live in fear. I think I should live every day. Take every opportunity. I see the impact that can come from sharing my experience. I want to be a voice," she told People.
Sophia believed her sister had successfully adjusted to the college life that cancer had interrupted. She praised Isabella for handling everything "incredibly well."
Yet even as Isabella moved forward, one visible reminder of her ordeal remained. The hair she had lost during treatment was finally growing back, but its appearance had changed completely.
When Isabella's Hair Grew Back, She Barely Recognized It
Before cancer, Isabella was known for her striking strawberry-red auburn hair. Its distinctive color, texture, and length regularly attracted compliments, and she considered her curls an important part of her identity.
"It was strawberry, red auburn and people would always comment on the color, the length, the texture," she told People. Losing her hair during treatment was especially painful because it changed how she saw herself.
"So when I didn't have it, I was like, 'Oh no. I'm never gonna be pretty again,'" she recalled. When her hair finally began growing back after chemotherapy, Isabella was surprised by what she saw.
Instead of returning in its familiar auburn shade and curly texture, the new growth was pin-straight and black. But the transformation didn't end there.
Over time, her hair began lightening in color and developing a curlier texture, eventually becoming what are commonly known as "chemo curls." Isabella found herself adjusting to a short, curly afro rather than the long auburn hair she had once treasured.
Styling it wasn't always easy, particularly when she missed being able to pull her hair back. Yet the experience had given her a new appreciation for something she had previously taken for granted.
"I really value my hair now because I do think I took it for granted before," she admitted. "I just want to protect this hair really well." Isabella described losing her hair as "traumatic."
Determined to care for her new curls, she began using products designed to keep them moisturized and strong as they continued growing. And before long, followers would see her transformation in a setting far removed from hospitals and treatment rooms.
Isabella's Dramatic New Look Stole the Spotlight During a Madrid Getaway
Photographs from Madrid showed Isabella enjoying time abroad with Sophia, looking stylish and confident in her new hairstyle. She wore an oversized coat with faux-fur trim over a cream turtleneck, completing the look with jeans, dark sunglasses, and gold hoop earrings.
Her natural curls framed her face in short, defined ringlets. "& @sophialstrahan take on Madrid," Isabella captioned the photographs. Fans quickly flooded the comments with praise for her appearance.

Others were simply thrilled to see Isabella looking happy and healthy after everything she had endured. "Oh my gosh!!! GORGEOUS!! 😍🥰🤗," one follower wrote. "Happy for your good health. Be well sweet girl!" another commented.
"Isabella you are thriving! You are Beautiful! God Bless You Always [sic]! ❤️🙏," someone else declared. The compliments echoed reactions Isabella had received when she appeared alongside Michael and Sophia during their 2025 family interview.

Other viewers were equally impressed by both sisters. "Isabella is absolutely gorgeous...so is her sister! They are beautiful inside and out too," one person commented. Another praised the family's strength and Isabella's willingness to share her experience.
"They are such beautiful young women. Isabella's haircut…wow. So becoming. I'm so proud of her for sharing her story and educating. The whole family is amazing. So much love there," said another.
The admiration continued when Isabella, Sophia, and Michael appeared together on a People magazine cover. "Isabella looks STUNNING ❤️❤️❤️❤️," one Instagram user gushed.
"Isabella I love the come back look! You look fabulous daring!!!!❤️ [sic]," another wrote. One follower acknowledged how far Isabella had come since her diagnosis. "His daughters are beautiful, Isabella looks amazing, so happy this young lady pulled through. Many blessings for the future. ❤️."
For those who had watched Isabella appear with a shaved head during treatment and later embrace her newly grown curls, the photographs reflected a remarkable personal transformation.
But the most poignant reminder of how much had changed came when Michael reached back into the family archives for the twins' latest birthday.
